Bhangra Dance

Bhangra refers to several types of Punjabi-style dance. Bhangra dance is based on music from a dhol, folk singing, and chimta. Bhangra is a highly energetic dance. Dancing fiercely and with great pride, dancers typically add nonsensical, random noises to their dancing.
Bhangra dance has expanded into the world of fitness and is accepted as a form of intense exercise. It is an excellent form of exercise as well as entertainment.

The dances are typically performed at times of celebration, such as harvest (Vaisakhi), weddings, mela (Festivals) like Lohri, Jashan e Baharan (Spring Festival) etc., at which time everyone is encouraged to dance. Married Punjabi couples usually dance together. The husband dances in the style of male Punjabi dances, frequently with arms raised, and the wife dances in the style of female Punjabi dances.

Main Punjabi folk dance for men or for all is Bhangda or Bhangra and for females is Giddha or Giddhah. Common Punjabi Folk Dances for females are: Sammi, Giddha, Jaago, Kikli, Luddi. Common Punjabi Folk Dances for males are: Dhamaal Dance, Bhangra, Malwai Giddha, Jhumar, Luddi, Jalli, Mirza, Sial Koti, Jugni, Khichan, Dhamal, Dankara, Khatka (Sword Dance). Common Punjabi Folk Dances for males and females are: Bhangra, Karthi, Jindua, Dandass.

Bhangra has been first known to offspring to North America about 100 years ago with the first generation of Punjabi Americans that immigrated to California. Bhangra competitions have been active in the United States and Canada for over 25 years. North America has a great history of elite bhangra competitions and bhangra teams.

In the West, unlike in the Punjab, there is less emphasis on traditional songs and more focus on the flow of a mix; many teams mix traditional bhangra music with hip-hop or rock songs. This synergy of the bhangra dance with other cultures parallels the fusion of music with different genres. University competitions have experienced an explosion in popularity over the last few years and have helped to promote the dance and music in today’s mainstream culture. Bhangra in Los Angeles has become one of the biggest bhangra competitions in the U.S. Teams from all over United States and Canada come together to compete and show their talent.
