What is Vedic Meditation?
The systematic method that leads one to the deepest state of silence is called meditation. Sleep is very necessary for all creatures of the world in order to have physical and mental rest, but the rest acquired through meditation is far superior to the rest given by sleep. There is a difference between sleep and the deep state of silence. The ignorant person sleeps every day and comes out of sleep no less ignorant because sleep offers only rest. But if one learns to go to a deep state of meditation, he is rested and at the same time his whole personality is transformed. That transformation cannot be attained without the inward method of meditation. Through meditation the mind attains a state of tranquility.
– Swami Rama in Perennial Psychology of the Bhagavad Gita, pages 228/229.
Yoga is science and so is Vedic Meditation! Literally ‘veda‘ means a book of knowledge; there are four Vedas: Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. Together they form the basis of all Vedic knowledge. They are also the source of Yoga, including all forms of meditation, and Ayurveda, the first medical system in the world which forms the basis of all the major medical systems. Vedic Meditation comes from the Vedas. It has been around for thousands of years. Krishna talks about it in the Madbhagavad Gita. Vedic Meditation does have a cultural reference point. Yet, the practice itself is a simple mental technique, free of dogma or belief. It has no conflict whatsoever, major or minor. Meditation is the essence of all Vedic ways of knowledge, the ultimate goal of Yoga, and the way to unfold our highest potential in life.
In its simplest form, you take a specific ‘seed’ that suits you, as decided by and given to you by your experienced teacher. ‘Seed’ for meditation can be a vision, the breath, a generic mantra, e.g., AUM, So-Hum, Om Namah Shivay, or, a specific mantra. All of them are effective ways, with some subtle differences, to meditate and we teach all of them. You stay with that thought to experience its subtler effects until you fathom the source of that thought. The focus on the thought quietens the mind and takes you to a more settled state. From gross thought, you experience the subtler state of the thought and then the subtlest state. As your mind settles, your body begins to relax and gets into resting mode deeper than sleep. You come out of meditation feeling clear, refreshed, and ready to engage. Vedic Meditation connects you to the source of Intelligence and Bliss so all your experiences become more profound and deeper.
Vedic Meditation is not about stopping thought – it allows you to connect with your inner calm. It’s not a miracle – it’s a scientific technique, a mechanism. For example, when you’re on a boat in the middle of the sea you get rocked by the waves because you are on the turbulent surface, but when you dive into the depths of the sea, it’s calm and quiet there. This is how the mind also works.
THE MORE YOU MEDITATE, THE LESSER THE CHANCE THAT YOU’LL MAKE UNSUITABLE CHOICES
What Vedic Meditation Involves
If you can think, you can meditate. You simply need to be open, curious and willing to follow some simple instructions. Vedic Meditation is effortless and natural. You can practice anywhere, at any place where you can sit comfortably with your back supported and head free. You can simply sit in a chair with your eyes closed for about 15 to 20 minutes in the morning and again in the early evening. Vedic meditation uses a very simple technique. It works with the mind beyond thought. It can even make your workouts more fun – meditation takes the stress out of activities and helps break habit patterns.
What Vedic Meditation is NOT:
- A religion or cult
- A struggle to focus or concentrate
- Difficult – anyone can do this
- Change in diet to learn this
- Chanting
- Listening to waves
- Sitting super still for long periods of time in uncomfortable positions
- Renunciation of the world
- Doing away with all your belongings
- Abstinence from the pleasures of the world
- A big time commitment
- Serious stuff
- For monks
HOW WILL I KNOW I AM BENEFITING FROM VEDIC MEDITATION
Vedic Meditation is a natural process for restoring balance and harmony in the milieu interiur. Meditation creates a state of restful alertness, where we connect with ourselves and allow the body to reboot its own healing mechanisms. You will know you’re benefiting from meditation when you notice the effects of meditation in your daily life – you’ll be happier, more connected, more aware, more relaxed, less stressed, less anxious, less judgmental, more at ease, feeling less pressure etc. You may also find that people around you will notice the positive effects your meditation is having on your mind-body-spirit before you do.
WHY IS MY PERSONAL ‘SEED’ IMPORTANT
‘Sabeeja dhyana’ or meditation with a ‘seed’ is the first step. It is the easiest and more effective technique for an uninitiated person. ‘Seed’ for meditation can be a vision, the breath, a generic mantra, e.g., AUM, So-Hum, Om Namah Shivay, or, a specific mantra. All of these methods are effective, though to a varying degree. We teach all of them, but there are some points to consider.
Success of meditation will depend on proper selection of the ‘seed’. Different ‘seeds’ address different aspects, to a varying level of depth. Even different sounds, or for that matter, any sound might address some aspects of your being, but one particular beej mantra will move you towards greater balance in more aspects. The power of thought increases when the thought is appreciated in its infant stages of development, hence the beeja mantra. As per Vedic theory, our personal beeja mantra is the sound that was vibrating in the universe at the time and location of our birth. This is specific for each person and is more effective in bringing that person into a state of greater balance all over. The chosen beeja mantra should resonate to the pulse of the initiate’s thought and as it resonates, create an increasingly soothing influence. The chosen mantra’s vibrations harmonizes with the meditator and suits his/her nature and way of life. This is more conducive to help us connect with that field of infinite possibilities more completely, with more awareness, and with more joy. Some mantras may not be suitable for you. Matching of mantra should be done with some deliberation. The promised results are dependent on a trained teacher choosing the correct mantra for a student.
Through the Vedic Meditation program, we cultivate inner awareness and incorporate core intentions of mind-body-spiritual health: a joyful, energetic body, a loving, compassionate heart, a reflective, alert mind, and a lightness of being.
Benefits of Meditation
Vedic Meditation helps you become the best version of yourself. It makes you more mindful and aware and can change your life. And you do that effortlessly.
- Success & Happiness: Vedic Meditation is a practical tool that makes life go smoother and better. After 20 minutes of meditation, you’ll end up feeling refreshed and centered, and that feeling stays with you. It helps you overcome stress, reduces anxiety, improves interpersonal, trouble-shooting and conflict resolving skills. Once you are more settled, you feel happier.
- Reduces Stress: Meditation programs can result in small to moderate reductions of multiple negative dimensions of psychological stress. Meditation cuts back your stress hormones (like cortisol and adrenaline) and replaces it with natural, endogenous happy hormones (like dopamine and serotonin).
- Controls Anxiety: Meditation also reduced symptoms of anxiety disorders, such as phobias, social anxiety, paranoid thoughts, obsessive-compulsive behaviors and panic attacks, and improves self-image of anxiety sufferers.
- Psychological Health: Meditation is effective in improving brain integration and positive affect and reducing psychological distress. There is significant decrease in anxiety, anger, depression, fatigue, and confusion, and significant increase in the vigor.
- Increased Attention: During meditation, the attentional system is active (heightened blood flow in anterior cingulate and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices) in an automatic manner. There is decreased blood flow in the pons and cerebellum. All this indicates increased attention.
- Equanimity: The practice of Vedic Meditation helps you maintain a steady state of mind during the ups and downs in life – personal or business.
- Improvement in Resilience: Resting-state functional connectivity amongst various brain centres was significantly increased via meditation which causes an immediate enhancement in resilience that is sustained. It is associated with the preventative effect of various psychiatric disorders which may be beneficial to individuals at high risk. Meditation decreases compassion fatigue and builds resilience. It builds up resilience in soldiers too.
- Enhances Self-Awareness: Meditation may help you develop a stronger understanding of yourself and teach you to recognize thoughts that may be harmful or self-defeating so you can steer them toward more constructive patterns.
- Health: Vedic Meditation simply and naturally allows the mind to settle down to experience a state of inner coherence and calm; the left and right hemispheres, and the front and back of the brain begin to work in harmony with each other. This brain wave coherence has been correlated with improvements in memory, problem-solving and decision-making abilities and influences your overall health.
- Healthier and More in Control: Stress weakens your immune system and speeds up the ageing process. Meditation reverses effects of stress. You fall sick less often and stay youthful.
- Promotes Physical Health: Meditation calms the body and puts it in a relaxed mode by activating the parasympathetic nervous system and quieting the sympathetic nervous system. That leads to repair and recovery. Individuals who practice meditation daily have lower blood levels of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol.
- Promotes Emotional Health: Meditation therapies have been shown to have salutary effects on patients having clinical depressive disorders during the acute and subacute phases of treatment.
- Boosts Immune System: Meditation helps immune system function better. It boosts antibodies. Meditation stimulates immune system brain-function regions and makes them function better.
- Focus: Vedic Meditation is the practice of touching stillness for a few minutes twice every day. Focus and comprehension come from stillness, and you are still when you meditate.
- Peace of Mind, Clarity Focus and Longer Attention Span: Meditation develops full-brain functioning. Your prefrontal cortex is activated, alpha waves increase and neurophysiology changes so you think clearly and make good decisions. You stay more focused, for a longer duration.
- Improves Sleep: The very deep rest of meditation does two things – gives you lots of energy throughout the day and calms your system so you can fall asleep. During meditation, you can tap into a state of relaxation more regenerative than sleep, in terms of reduced cortisol (the stress hormone) and 3 objective measures of restfulness (breathing, lactic acid production, and skin conductance).
-
Hyperactivity (ADHD) Treatment: Almost every tenth person in the population has been or will be suffering from hyperactivity. According to research, mindfulness and meditation practice results in improvements in brain function measures associated with hyperactivity symptoms and improvements in ADHD-symptoms like: ability to focus on schoolwork, organizational abilities, ability to work independently, happiness and quality of sleep.
- Balance: With meditation, stress affects you less, and that has immediate benefits for your health and happiness. You enjoy your work more, are more productive, and are more sociable. You don’t carry stress from the office home with you. You have better relationships with your family and friends, and you enjoy your life more.
-
- Help with Fighting Addictions: Meditation develops mental discipline and willpower and can help you avoid triggers for unwanted impulses. This can help you recover from addiction, lose weight and redirect other unwanted habits.
- Relapse Prevention: Regular meditation helps with identifying and coping with high-risk situations, enhances self-efficacy and also helps with stimulus control and urge management. All this helps with relapse prevention.
-
- Cognitive Ability and Creativity: You feel happy and become more creative. With meditation, creativity and intuition increase, the pleasure of life grow and negativity recedes. Meditation boosts creativity and innovation. It improves both divergent as well as convergent thinking. You start seeing possibilities where you could see only a wall.
- Efficiency: With meditation, by being more settled and focused, you end up with more time. The relaxation you feel after meditating makes you feel recharged and refreshed so you can prioritize and get things done.
- Longevity: Effects of Vedic Meditation may add to longevity.
- Longevity: Meditation may have salutary effects on telomere length by reducing cognitive stress and stress arousal and increasing positive states of mind and hormonal factors that may promote telomere, the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. This may enhance cellular, and so, organismal, longevity. Others effects of Vedic Meditation may also add to longevity.
- Brain growth: Meditation Is the number 1 brain changer. Meditation is the proven way to upgrade the human brain.
- Reduction in Age-Related Memory Loss: The improved focus you can gain through regular meditation may increase memory and mental clarity. These benefits help fight age-related memory loss and dementia.
- Overcoming Disease: Here are a few examples:
- Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Other Neuro-degenerative Diseases Causing Dementia: Studies have shown that different forms of meditation may play a role in preventing and causing improvement in symptoms of AD and other disorders causing dementia.
- Controls Pain: Meditation can diminish the perception of pain in the brain. This may help treat chronic pain when used as a supplement to medical care or physical therapy.
- Decrease In Inflammation: Meditation may increase IL-10 and decrease cytokines, which indicates decrease in inflammation. This may happen through regulation of the stress response and possibly contribute to effective and beneficial interactions between the nervous and immune systems.
- Better Blood Pressure Control: Blood pressure decreases not only during meditation, but also over time in individuals who meditate regularly. This can reduce strain on the heart and arteries, helping prevent heart disease.
- Gene Expression: Relaxation response can alter the expression of genes involved in immune function, energy metabolism and insulin secretion. Relaxation response elicits distinct temporal patterns of differential gene expression. Practice involving relaxation response induce rapid changes in gene expression (in minutes) that are linked to a select set of biological pathways among both long-term and short-term practitioners that might explain the health benefits. These genes have been linked to pathways responsible for energy metabolism, electron transport chain, biological oxidation and insulin secretion.

Turiya, or chaturiya or chaturtha, or the Fourth, is pure consciousness. Turiya is the background that underlies and transcends the three common states of consciousness. The states of consciousness are: waking consciousness, dreaming, and dreamless sleep. Turiya is the fourth state of consciousness – jagrata (conscious), swapna (dreaming), sushupti (dreamless sleep) and turiya, the state of pure consciousness. It is the state beyond deep, dreamless sleep, in which the Superconscious is active. It is the thoughtless awake state – it is the constant background consciousness that we all have, but upon which the other three states can intrude and interfere with the experience of reality.
