Gentle Yoga
SAVY Yoga has been serving the city of London and surrounding areas since 2011 under the most qualified and experienced faculty in LONDON and CANADA, and one of the most qualified and experienced faculty in the WORLD! To serve the people of London in a better way, we offer some very useful and healing, authentic Yoga/ Meditation/ Pranayama routines, ranging from gentle to very challenging Yoga, for the beginner to the advanced student alike.
Here, we bring to you an introduction to Yoga classes being taught at our Old South SAVY Yoga Studio at Wortley Road.
Through demonstration, discussion and experiential movement, you will gain key understanding of proper postures and how to keep your body safe. As common sense dictates, one can function properly only if one is disease-free and is in a healthy state of body, mind and spirit. So, for us, your health and disease-free state comes first of all. Yamas, Niyamas, Asanas, Pranayama, Swara, Mudras, Marmas, Kriyas, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana – our Yoga is much more than mere ekanga Yoga comprising gymnastics and sauna!
Old South Yoga Classes at SAVY, in the serene setting of the Heritage Conservation District of Wortley Village, bring to you the taste, values and expertise of the true traditional Ashtanga and Vinyasa Yoga from India. Inspired adherence to the eight pillars or steps of yoga bestow one with a calm mind and fit body and lead one towards attaining an emancipated life. In more physical or materialistic terms, Yoga is more than capable of keeping one physically and mentally fit and disease-free. It has become the new hot and favoured way to sweat it out for better health. SAVY Yoga is a humble step in that direction.
Gentle Yoga
The more appropriate and descriptive name of Gentle Yoga is Gentle Hatha yoga, or Gentle style of Hatha Yoga – it’s a gentle variation of Hatha Yoga. It describes a style of practice that focuses on stretching and breathing. It supports the mental, physical, and spiritual needs of all levels and ages of practitioners.
It is a good practice for those new to yoga as well as the fast-paced yogis who want to maintain a healthy and well-balanced yoga practice. This form of yoga helps increase mobility and flexibility and is therapeutic too. Gentle yoga is not necessarily easy – while the intensity may be lower, the focus and commitment are higher. Connect to your breath and body and let go of your stress energy, worries and burdens. With a focus on action, alignment and breath, this practice is done at a tempo suited to listening to the body and explore what feels good.
Gentle yoga classes move at a slow, steady pace, mostly through floor based or seated asanas. Movement is linked with breath, and entry into the postures is gradual. You are allowed to experiment to reach a holding position. This protects and nurtures the joints, muscles, and connective tissue. You get to explore your pain-free range of motion and find your sweet spot. Poses are held for a short to moderate length of time. You work at a lower intensity level. You hold well-measured stretches exploring range of motion. Postures may be approached in gradual steps while focusing on breathing and repetition so that the practice is simple to do and easy to remember. This encourages a highly individualized approach to practice with on-going encouragement to make moment-to-moment adjustments. A deliberate rate of gentle yoga also provides opportunity for introspection and improvement.
Gentle Yoga is different from Restorative Yoga – Gentle Yoga has a greater degree of physical participation, while Restorative Yoga is intended to be more passive and therapeutic.
Gentle Yoga classes are typically appropriate for those who want a nurturing, slow-paced, well-supported, smooth, softer and relaxing practice. Generally speaking, these classes are suitable for people with movement limitations, or profound stiffness due to lack of activity and provide relief from disabilities and chronic conditions e.g., arthritis, back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders, recovery from joint replacements, recovery from surgery, illness or injury. These are good for seniors, new practitioners, women who are pregnant and those seeking stress-reduction or weight management. Gentle Yoga approach has even been found to be an important compliment in programs to reverse heart disease or provide relief from the challenging conditions of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, as well as mood disorders.
Gentle Yoga relieves stress, increases flexibility, calms the mind, and strengthens the body. Gentle Yoga, in particular, can be relaxing and helps enhance range of motion. It’s accessible to people who can’t do a practice that requires a lot of flexibility and strength.
Gentle Yoga is particularly good for balancing digestive difficulties because as it soothes and relaxes the nervous system through stimulation of parasympathetic nervous system. Done regularly, it can also improve sleep patterns. It can reduce and even cure insomnia. Many people report sleeping better on the days they practice gentle yoga.
