As common sense dictates, one can function properly only if one is disease-free and is in a healthy state of body, mind and spirit. So, for us, your health and disease-free state comes first of all. Yamas, Niyamas, Asanas, Pranayama, Swara, Mudras, Marmas, Kriyas, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana – our Yoga is much more than mere ekanga Yoga comprising gymnastics and sauna!

Old South Yoga Classes at SAVY, in the serene setting of the Heritage Conservation District of Wortley Village, bring to you the taste, values and expertise of the true traditional Ashtanga and Vinyasa Yoga from India. Inspired adherence to the eight pillars or steps of yoga bestow one with a calm mind and fit body and lead one towards attaining an emancipated life. In more physical or materialistic  terms, Yoga is more than capable of keeping one physically and mentally fit and disease-free. It has become the new hot and favoured way to sweat it out for better health. SAVY Yoga is a humble step in that direction.

Chair Yoga

SAVY Chair Yoga

Chair yoga is one of the most gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting in a chair, or using a chair for support.

Most people in the west want to get involved in yoga for physical and mental fitness, but not everyone is able to sit on the floor. But if you can sit in a chair, you can do chair yoga! Chair Yoga can be incredibly beneficial for people with mobility issues, including elderly people, those with flexibility issues or disabilities, as well as for office-goers who just want to stretch a bit during their breaks. Yoga moves can be easily modified to be done from the comfort of your chair.

Usually a chair yoga student is unable to participate in a routine yoga class due to the effects of aging or disabilities. Chair yoga is a great practice for everyone as it deepens flexibility and strengthens the body. Chair yoga is usually taught as a way to achieve physical and mental fitness. Clients can learn many kinds of yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and ways of relaxation, while sitting in a chair.

Chair yoga classes are not designed for supple-bodied 20 something that can do impossible looking poses. Chair Yoga routines are designed for people with flexibility issues or for seniors, and your teacher will help modify the poses to accommodate that. Your flexibility gets better as you practice. All yoga classes have people with varying levels of experience and capabilities, so that should not be a problem for an experienced Yoga Teacher.

People of all ages can practice chair yoga. Most people who opt for chair yoga classes do have health issues, and many are there because a health care professional’s recommendation. A good yoga teacher will be aware of any limitations you might have. Chair yoga can help you initiate Yoga which can help with many health issues including heart disease, high blood pressure, anxiety, fatigue, arthritis, vertigo, multiple sclerosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, depression, and chronic pain to name just a few conditions.

You may simply wear loose-fitting, comfortable streets clothes for a chair yoga class. The only prop you’ll need is a chair which will be provided by the Studio.

Chair Yoga classes are often seen in specialized Yoga Studios, senior centers, people with assisted living lifestyles, nursing homes, adult day care centers, and physical rehabilitation units.

Benefits of Chair Yoga

Yoga has been shown to improve overall health, prevent and even reverse disease when practiced regularly. It’s not surprising that it can lend all its benefits to those with mobility issues.

Here are some of the benefits:

  1. Improved Strength. Regular practice of Yoga improves strength. This means that elderly people will be better able to continue with daily activities independently for many more years to come. Better mobility and flexibility also decrease their chance of a fall.
  2. Improved Flexibility. Better flexibility helps with daily activities such as reaching down to tie shoe laces or pick things up.
  3. Better Proprioception. Proprioception is the ability of the body to know where your body is in space, and coordinating your movements accordingly. This is particularly important for elderly people and can prevent falls. For people with disabilities or conditions such as MS, it may mean having greater control over your body and its movements.
  4. Less Stress. With better mobility and flexibility comes more confidence. That can lessen the impact of chronic illnesses and pain. For elderly people, it may also help them cope with feeling of loneliness. Being calmer and more relaxed inevitably leads to a greater feeling of happiness and well-being.
  5. Socializing. Chair yoga classes give you an opportunity to socialize and make friends. Less loneliness leads to better quality of life.
  6. Better Pain Management. A proper Yoga routine would include some breath work also. Through meditation and paying attention to your breath, you can help your body and mind to cope with your problems.

You are most welcome to  learn this routine and stay healthy.
