Koshas

Pranayama kosha or Energy Body

Pranamaya Kosha Taittiriya Upanishad further says: “Inside this is another body made of life energy. It fills the physical body and takes its shape. Those who treat this vital force as divine experience excellent health and longevity because this energy is the source of physical life.”

This second dimension or kosha is called pranamaya kosha, the energy body, and is the first of the three layers of the Astral Body or Linga Shareera or Sukshma Shareera.

This second kosha is composed of prana, or chi, or ka, or pneuma, or mana, or life force. It is made up of 72,000 nadis, or astral tubes, through which prana, the vital energy, flows. Prana is a Sanskrit word meaning movement, motion or vibration. It is the vital force that produces the subtle vibrations related to breath, and which are the driving force behind the physical aspect of the senses and the operation of the physical body. Prana is the universal principle of energy. It is all the energies in the universe put together, which includes the forces of nature as well as the power within us. It is the life force that enters us at birth, stays and travels within the body and leaves us when we die. Pranamaya kosha is the vital life energy which organises the body parts and provides movement for mental and physical expression. It allows the invisible indweller, our True Self to be able to animate in the external world. At the same time, however, it allows the eternally still, silent center of consciousness to be mistakenly identified as the moving, visible physical body.

Prana is in constant motion throughout life. It is manifest not only in human beings, but also in animals, herbs or trees, oceans, mountains, minerals and bacteria. Even the tiniest part of an atom has prana. This prana is both, :

  • visible, and
  • invisible.

Visible prana manifests before you – wherever there is prana there is movement, growth, change and activity, and where there is no prana there is no activity. When we die the body dissipates because it has become completely bereft of prana. Visible prana is manifest right in front of you. After death the body dissipates because there is no prana in it. Also, if pranas are agitated or there is an imbalance, there is imbalance everywhere.

Prana is responsible for the action of the karmendriyas, the organs of action. Indriya means vehicle, tool or sense. Karma means action. There are five karmendriyas:

  1. feet,
  2. hands,
  3. vocal cords,
  4. urinary and
  5. excretory systems.

Through these five karmendriyas you perform five gross actions. Prana is responsible for the action of the karmendriyas, the organs of action – Prana is the force behind them. Also, there has to be coordination between the prana and the indriyas or sense organs. If there is too much prana, then children sometimes become hyperactive. Hyperactivity in the body is due to hyperactivity of the prana. In old age, we become slow due to lack of prana. Pranamaya kosha is the energy in annamaya kosha.

As per Vedic scriptures, there are five types of Prana, located in different parts of the body that support us. These five pranas affect energy through subtle channels. There five pranas are:

  1. prana,
  2. apana,
  3. udana,
  4. samana and
  5. vyana.

Vayus

These forms of prana control various functions in the physical body. For example, urination, excretion, insemination and childbirth are consequences of apana. Then there are five auxiliary or secondary pranas.

According to the classical tradition, prana enters the womb in the fourth month of pregnancy. When an embryo is developed in the mother’s womb, it is part of the mother’s body and prana. After the third month, the independent or individual pranas manifest in the foetus. That is, from the fourth month, the mother’s prana and the prana of the embryo become two different pranas.

For both a healthy life and the practice of meditation, it is very useful, or essential that this level of our being be trained, regulated, and directed, so that it flows smoothly. In Pranayama and meditation, we become aware of Pranamaya kosha, explore it, and then go inward, to and through the other koshas. At a more realized level, boundaries fade away; every exhalation becomes another’s inhalation and every inhalation is another’s exhalation. This prana is a part of cosmic life. Each and every creature, each and every thing in this world is a part of cosmic life. Prana is the force or energy for all kinds of motion. A Yogi who has mastered the knowledge of Prana also gains mastery over all manifestations of powers in the cosmos.

Refinement and Development of Pranamaya Kosha

Learning to direct and regulate prana is important to maintain health. The nerves and endocrine glands are the physical correlates of the pranic body’s nadis and chakras. Ayurveda says that health issues begin at energetic levels before manifesting physically.  Prana gets its nourishment through the air we breathe as well as the food we eat. The lungs and the large intestine are connected to each other. They both supply us with Prana, the lungs because they absorb the essence of the air, and the large intestine absorbs the essence and the nutrition of food. The Prana gets nourished, which in turn nourishes both the body and the mind. It is possible to nourish Prana through the following methods:

  • Pranamaya kosha is directly influenced through practice of pranayama. It is imperative to have an impeccable technique for Pranayama.
  • Take sattvic food. It helps energize Pranamaya Kosha.
  • Practice asanas with an awareness of the breath.
  • Releasing what you don’t need is as important as adding what you need; spend less time on the activities (or relationships) that dim your inner light.
  • Practice good intention and repetition; you can change the energy of your inner and outer environment.
  • Practice mauna (noble silence). Try making meals in silence, or while chanting or singing uplifting mantras.
  • Mudras connect different nadis; their knowledge and practice can strengthen Prana.
  • Mantras have a positive influence on nadis. Chant or sing mantras suited to your Pranic body.
  • Marma Therapy acts on marmas and can be very helpful.
  • Traatak, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana also are very useful.

Bhangra Dance

Bhangra Dance in London ON

A FUN AND ENJOYABLE WAY TO EXERCISE!

Dance your way to fitness

Next Bhangra Dance workshop in London

in February

Bhangra refers to Punjabi-style dancing!

Bhangra dance is based on music from a dhol, folk singing, and chimta.Bhangra is a highly energetic dance. Dancing fiercely and with great pride, dancers typically add nonsensical, random noises to their dancing.
Bhangra dance has expanded into the world of fitness and is accepted as a form of intense exercise. It is an excellent form of exercise as well as entertainment.

Bhangra has been first known to offspring to North America about 100 years ago with the first generation of Punjabi Americans that immigrated to California. Bhangra competitions have been active in the United States and Canada for over 25 years. North America has a great history of elite bhangra competitions and bhangra teams.

In the West, unlike in the Punjab, there is less emphasis on traditional songs and more focus on the flow of a mix; many teams mix traditional bhangra music with hip-hop or rock songs.

Dr Jitender K Sahdev has bagged many prizes in Bhangra competitions. He will be leading Bhangra classes here in London ON.

SAVY International Inc./ SAVY Yoga Studio has started a novel series Beat the Beast – a series of 10-day workshops, each one targeted at different major diseases as well as positive health. Under this series, we offer workshops on some very useful Yoga routines including yoga postures, breathing exercises, marma therapy, nada yoga, shithilakaran, meditation techniques, mudras, kriyas, and a lot more – all that which is specifically effective for the said  health issue and has a proven role in the care of that particular state. Participants will be required to attend 90-minute classes for the specified 10 days.

Yoga for Diabetes Mellitus

Claiming Your Health Back from Diabetes

Beat the Beast series, based on Yoga, Pranayama, Nada, Marmas, Meditation and more, offers immense healing potential for the body, mind and spirit.

Diabetes is a long-term condition that causes high blood sugar levels. In 2013 it was estimated that over 382 million people throughout the world had diabetes. In Type 1 Diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1. In Type 2 Diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin for proper function. Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type. Gestational Diabetes, this type affects females during pregnancy. The most common diabetes symptoms include : Polyuria – frequent urination, Polydipsia – intense thirst, and Polyphagia – intense hunger. Weight gain, unusual weight loss, fatigue, cuts and bruises that do not heal, male sexual dysfunction, numbness and tingling in hands and feet are also commonly reported symptoms. In Type 1 Diabetes, if you follow a healthy eating plan, do adequate exercise, and take insulin, you can lead a normal life. In Type 2, patients need to eat healthily, be physically active, and test their blood glucose. They may also need to take oral medication, and/or insulin to control blood glucose levels.   Yoga is not just physical stretching, but it is a whole science of life! Yoga and Ayurveda offer many ways of helping in diseases. SAVY offers programs based on Yoga, Marma, Kriyas, Mudras, effective breathing techniques and other healing elements of Yoga. Validated by the stringent test of time and the millions who tried them in the past, and backed and refined by Dr Sahdev’s almost three decades of superlative clinical experience at the fore-front of main-stream Medicine, inspired by his work in Surgical Oncology, Neurosurgery and other Super Specialities at premier medical institutes in India, his study and work in other Alternative modalities and Yoga, and an input of thousands of hours of educated and qualified clinical research and its deep analysis in India, these breathing and other techniques have been proved to actually deliver! Right from the day of  SAVY‘s inception, we’ve put benefits of all the advanced and superlative skills and knowledge on offer for the benefit of humanity under our Yoga Therapy programs, specifically including Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program. In a study done on effect of yoga in Diabetes-2 cases, yoga resulted in significant reduction in BMI, glycemic control, and malondialdehyde and increase in glutathione and vitamin C and helps in reducing oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes. Yoga in addition to standard care helps reduce BMI and improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients.

We offer very well-structured, effective, advanced and result-oriented programs for Diabetes care as well as other diseases. These are the methods which work at cellular level and root out any insufficiency. As studies are proving, Yoga has a definite role to play in Diabetes mellitus management.

The Overall and Personal Cost of Diabetes

The out-of-pocket expenses associated with diabetes remain a substantial portion of disposable income and a barrier to the prevention of diabetes-related complications. The estimated total economic cost of diagnosed diabetes in 2012 in USA was $245 billion, a 41% increase from our previous estimate of $174 billion (in 2007 dollars). This highlights the substantial burden that diabetes imposes on society. Additional components of societal burden include intangibles from pain and suffering, resources from care provided by non-paid caregivers, and the burden associated with undiagnosed diabetes.

World Diabetes Day

On World Diabetes Day – Diabetes Mellitus

World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14 to mark the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting of London ON, who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea leading to the discovery of insulin in 1921.

This day engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat of diabetes. It was adopted as an official United Nations Day in 2007 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world. Healthy Living and Diabetes is the World Diabetes Day theme for 2014-2016.

The logo for World Diabetes Day is the blue circle – the global symbol for diabetes which was developed as part of the Unite for Diabetes awareness campaign.

Diabetes Mellitus

Around 250 B.C., the name “diabetes” was first used. The word diabetes comes from Greek, meaning a “siphon”. Araetus the Cappadocian, a Greek physician during the second century A.D., named the condition diabainein. He described patients who were passing too much water (polyuria) – like a siphon. The word became “diabetes” from the English adoption of the Medieval Latin diabetes.

In 1675, Thomas Willis added mellitus to the term, although it is commonly referred to simply as diabetes. Mel in Latin means “honey”; the urine and blood of people with diabetes has excess glucose, and glucose is sweet like honey. Diabetes mellitus could literally mean “siphoning off sweet water”.

In ancient India people observed that ants would be attracted to some people’s urine, because it was sweet. The term “Sweet Urine Disease” was coined.

Key Points

diabetes

  • Diabetes is a long-term condition that causes high blood sugar levels.
  • In 2013 it was estimated that over 382 million people throughout the world had diabetes.
  • In Type 1 Diabetes – the body does not produce insulin. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1.
  • In Type 2 Diabetes – the body does not produce enough insulin for proper function. Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type.
  • Gestational Diabetes – this type affects females during pregnancy.
  • The most common diabetes symptoms include
    • Polyuria – frequent urination
    • Polydipsia – intense thirst, and
    • Polyphagia – intense hunger.
    • Weight gain, unusual weight loss, fatigue, cuts and bruises that do not heal, male sexual dysfunction, numbness and tingling in hands and feet are also commonly reported symptoms.
  • In Type 1 Diabetes, if you follow a healthy eating plan, do adequate exercise, and take insulin, you can lead a normal life.
  • In Type 2, patients need to eat healthily, be physically active, and test their blood glucose. They may also need to take oral medication, and/or insulin to control blood glucose levels.
  • As the risk of cardiovascular disease is much higher for diabetics, it is crucial that blood pressure and cholesterol levels are monitored regularly.
  • As smoking might have a serious effect on cardiovascular health, diabetics should stop smoking.
  • Hypoglycemia – low blood glucose – can have a deleterious effect on patient.
  • Hyperglycemia – when blood glucose is too high – can also have a bad effect on the patient.

There are three types of diabetes:

1) Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

The body does not produce insulin. It is also referred to as insulin-dependent diabetesjuvenile diabetes, or early-onset diabetes. People usually develop type 1 diabetes before their 40th year, often in early adulthood or teenage years. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1. Patients with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life. They must also ensure proper blood-glucose levels by carrying out regular blood tests and following a special diet. The prevalence of type 1 Diabetes among the under 20s in the USA rose 23% between 2001 and 2009.

2) Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

diabetes

Beta cells in islets of Langerhans do not produce enough insulin for proper function, or the receptors in the body do not react to insulin (insulin resistance). Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type. Overweight and obese people have a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. People with more of central obesity are especially at risk. Being overweight/obese causes the body to release chemicals that can destabilize the body’s cardiovascular and metabolic systems. It may respond to simple measures such as : loss of weight, following a healthy diet, doing plenty of exercise, and monitoring blood glucose levels regularly. However, type 2 diabetes is typically a progressive disease. Drinking just one can of (non-diet) soda per day can raise our risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes is also greater as we get older. Men whose testosterone levels are low have been found to have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

3) Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Diagnosis of gestational diabetes is made during pregnancy. This type affects females during pregnancy. Some women have very high levels of glucose in their blood, and their bodies are unable to produce enough insulin to transport all of the glucose into their cells, resulting in progressively rising levels of glucose.

The majority of gestational diabetes patients can control their diabetes with exercise and diet. Women whose diets before becoming pregnant were high in animal fat and cholesterol had a higher risk for gestational diabetes, compared to their counterparts whose diets were low in cholesterol and animal fats.

Pre-diabetes Mellitus

The vast majority of patients with type 2 diabetes initially have prediabetes. Their post-prandial blood glucose levels go higher than normal, but come back to normal. Studies indicate that some damage to the circulatory system and the heart may occur even at this stage.

Investigations

Doctors can determine whether a patient has a normal metabolism, is pre-diabetic or diabetic through three tests:

  • The Hb A1c test: Glycated hemoglobin (hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c, A1C, or Hb1c; sometimes also HbA1c or HGBA1C) is a form of hemoglobin that is measured primarily to identify the average plasma glucose concentration over prolonged periods of time.
    – at least 6.5% means diabetes
    – between 5.7% and 5.99% means pre-diabetes
    – less than 5.7% means normal
  • The FPG (Fasting Plasma Glucose) test
    – at least 126 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/L) means diabetes
    – between 100 mg/dl and 125.99 mg/dl (5.5 to 7.0 mmol/L) means prediabetes
    – less than 100 mg/dl (5.5 mmol/L) means normal
An abnormal reading following the FPG means the patient has impaired fasting glucose (IFG)
  • The OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test)
    – at least 200 mg/dl (11.2 mmol/L) means diabetes
    – between 140 and 199.9 mg/dl (7.8 to 11.2 mmol/L) means prediabetes
    – less than 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) means normal
An abnormal reading following the OGTT means the patient has impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)

Controlling Diabetes

All types of diabetes are treatable.

Diabetes type 1 lasts a lifetime, there is no known cure. Patients with type 1 are treated with regular insulin injections, as well as a special diet and exercise.

Type 2 usually lasts a lifetime, however, it can be managed with or without medication, through a combination of exercise, diet and body weight control. Sometimes insulin injections are also required.

Patient has a significantly higher risk of developing complications especially if diabetes is not adequately controlled.

Complications linked to diabetes

Complications of Diabetes Mellitus

  • Eye complications– glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and some others.
  • Foot complications– neuropathy, ulcers, and sometimes gangrene which may require that the foot be amputated
  • Skin complications– people with diabetes are more susceptible to skin infections and skin disorders
  • Heart problems– such as ischemic heart disease, when the blood supply to the heart muscle is diminished
  • Hypertension– common in people with diabetes, which can raise the risk of kidney disease, eye problems, heart attack and stroke
  • Mental health– uncontrolled diabetes raises the risk of suffering from depression, anxiety and some other mental disorders
  • Hearing loss– diabetes patients have a higher risk of developing hearing problems
  • Gum disease– there is a much higher prevalence of gum disease among diabetes patients
  • Gastroparesis– the muscles of the stomach stop working properly
  • Ketoacidosis– a combination of ketosis and acidosis; accumulation of ketone bodies and acidity in the blood.
  • Neuropathy– diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage which can lead to several different problems.
  • HHNS (Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketotic Syndrome)– blood glucose levels shoot up too high, and there are no ketones present in the blood or urine. It is an emergency condition.
  • Nephropathy– uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to kidney disease
  • PAD (peripheral arterial disease)– symptoms may include pain in the leg, tingling and sometimes problems walking properly
  • Stroke– if blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood glucose levels are not controlled, the risk of stroke increases significantly
  • Erectile dysfunction– male impotence.
  • Infections– people with badly controlled diabetes are much more susceptible to infections
  • Healing of wounds– cuts and lesions take much longer to heal

Some Facts And Myths Regarding Diabetes

Many presumed myths keep making rounds. It is important to have an accurate picture of the disease. Some common diabetes myths are mentioned here:

  • People with diabetes should not exercise– THIS IS NOT TRUE! Exercise is important for people with diabetes, as it is for everybody else. Exercise helps manage body weight, improves cardiovascular health, improves mood, helps blood sugar control, and relieves stress. Yoga has been shown to have an important role. Patients should discuss exercise with their doctor first.
  • Fat people always develop type 2 diabetes eventually– Again, this is not true. Being overweight or obese raises the risk of becoming diabetic, they are risk factors, but do not mean that an obese person will definitely become diabetic.
  • Diabetes is a nuisance, but not serious– Diabetes is a serious disease. Two thirds of diabetes patients die prematurely from stroke or heart disease. The life expectancy of a person with diabetes is from five to ten years shorter than other people’s.
  • Children can outgrow diabetes– Child-onset diabetes is almost always type 1; insulin-producing beta cells in islets of Langerhans in pancreas do not produce insulin, so they will need to take insulin for the rest of their lives.
  • Don’t eat too much sugar, you will become diabetic– A person with diabetes type 1 develops the disease because immune system destroyed the insulin-producing beta cells. A diet high in calories, which can make people overweight/obese, raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, especially if there is a history of this disease in the family.
  • I know when my blood sugar levels are high or low– The only way to be sure about your blood sugar levels is to test it regularly. Even very slight rise in blood-glucose levels significantly raises the risk of ischemic heart disease.
  • Diabetes diets are different from other people’s– Experts say that there is no need to buy special diabetic foods because they offer no special benefit as compared to the healthy things we can buy in most shops. Diabetics just need to eat healthy.
  • High blood sugar levels are fine for some, while for others they are a sign of diabetes– High blood-sugar levels are never normal for anybody. Some illnesses, mental stress and steroids can cause temporary hikes in blood sugar levels in people without diabetes. Anybody with higher-than-normal blood sugar levels or sugar in their urine should be checked for diabetes.
  • Diabetics cannot eat bread, potatoes or pasta– People with diabetes can eat starchy foods. However, they must keep an eye on the size of the portions. Whole grain starchy foods are better, as is true for people without diabetes.
  • One person can transmit diabetes to another person– Diabetes is not infectious or contagious.
  • Only older people develop type 2 diabetes– A growing number of children and teenagers are developing type 2 diabetes. Experts say that this is linked to the explosion in childhood obesity rates, poor diet, and physical inactivity.
  • I have to go on insulin, this must mean my diabetes is severe– people take insulin when diet alone or diet with oral or non-insulin injectable medicines do not provide good-enough diabetes control. Insulin helps diabetes control. It does not usually have anything to do with the severity of the disease.
  • If you have diabetes you cannot eat chocolates or sweets– People with diabetes can eat chocolates and sweets if they combine them with exercise or eat them as part of a healthy meal, provided blood glucose level stays within normal limits.
  • Diabetes patients are more susceptible to colds and illnesses in general– A person with diabetes with good control is no more likely to become ill with a cold or something else than other people.

 Ayurveda in Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes was known to ancient Ayurveda and Yoga experts thousands of years ago.  The Indian physician Sushruta in 400 B.C. described the sweet taste of urine from affected individuals, and for many centuries to come, the sweet taste of urine was key to diagnosis. Diabetes Mellitus is known to Indians from Vedic period onwards by the name Asrava (Prameha). Diabetes is also known as Madhumeha (means passing sweet urine) in Ayurveda. The knowledge and effectiveness of diagnosis can be understood from the fact that Ayurveda has classified Diabetes (madhumeha) into 20 different types!

Types of diabetes , Causes and Symptoms

Two types of Prameha from management point of view has been described:

  • Krisha Pramehi (Lean Diabetic), and
  • Sthula pramehi  (Obese Diabetic)

They are classified in Ayurveda on very similar grounds as Diabetics are classified in IDDM and NIDDM respectively.

On the very similar pattern we find the classification as

  • Sahaj pramehi (Congenital) and
  • Apathaya nimmitaj (due to overeating and wrong eating habits).

Ayurveda clearly defines diabetes.  Diabetes Mellitus was known to Hindu Civilization since vedic period by the names:

  • Asrava(Prameha),
  • Madhumeha, or
  • Maharoga(Major Disease),

as almost all parts of the body and every cell of human physiology are affected.

It also disturbs 5 sheaths of the body –

  1. annamaya kosha {Food sheath},
  2. pranamayakosha{Energy sheath},
  3. manomaya kosha{Mind Sheath},
  4. vijnana maya kosha{IntellectualSheath} and
  5. anandamaya kosha{Bliss Sheath}.

According to Ayurveda, prameha is divided in 4 major types (and total 21 types)

  • Kapha type (again divided into 10 types)
  • Pitta type (again divided into 6 types)
  • Vata type (divided into 4 types)
  • Juvenile diabetes for children (for unhealthy practices of parents and/or due to the sins of past-birth)

The main cause of prameha (diabetes) are lack of exercise and consumption of excess food having ushna, snigdha and guru nature. Foods that increase kapha, medhas and mootra are the major factors for prameha.

Yashcha kinchith vidhiranyepi sleshma medho moothra samjananam sa sarva: nidana vishesha.

Classification of Prameha (Diabetes) :

According to Ayurveda , Prameha (Diabetes) can be classified in two categories :-

1)      Apatharpana uthaja prameha describing the lean diabetic and

2)      Santharpana uthaja prameha relating the obese diabetic.

Classification according to Causes of diabetes :-

1)      Sahaja prameha (congenital)

2)      Apathyanimittaja prameha (due to over eating and poor habits)

Classification of Diabetes according to Dosha :-

According to Ayurveda, Prameha (diabetes) is a tridoshaja vyadhi.  However the predominance of any one dosha and dooshya enables its classification into

  • Vataja Prameha
  • Pitaja Prameha, &
  • Kaphaja Pramehas.

They are further sub classified into 20 sub categories according to characteristics of urine, its volume, dhatu being excreted through urine.

Normally, Prameha (Diabetes- Madhumeha ) is classified by Ayurvedic Practitioners according to dosha predominance viz.

1) kapahja,

2) pithaja,

3) vathaja,

4) kapha-pithaja,

5) kapha-vathaja,

6) pitha-vathaja, and

7) vatha-pitha-kaphaja.

Sannipatha, kevala vathaja and kapha-vthaja(to some extent) and pitha-vathaja can be considered as IDDM. And others are considered as NIDDM.

1. Sweda Profuced Sweating
2. Angagandham Foul Smell of the Body
3. Anga Shidhilathwam Looseness of the body
4. Sayyasna Swapnasukhabhishangithwam Feeling of lethargy
5. Hridayopadeham Feeling of something coated or heaviness of hridaya.
6. Netropadeham Feeling of some thing coated on eyes
7. Jhwopadeham sensation of a coated tongue.
8. Shravanopadeham Feeling of coating on ears
9. Anga ghanathwam Heaviness of body parts

15. Asya madhuryam Sweet taste in mouth
16. Karadaham Burning sensation of palms
17. Pada daham Burning sensation of soles
18. Moothra madhuryam Sweetness of urine

According to Sushruta, Dosha predominance is the primary factor in Diabetes Complication.  According to him Malabandha (Constipation) is a complication of this disease as the patient has a concentration of Meda.  In such cases laxatives of average doses are not effective.

According to Brihathrayees, pidika (diabetic carbuncle) is a major complication of prameha (Madhumeha).

  • Yapya    – Palliable
  • Asadhya – Incurable

Sadhya: Describes patients who have been diagnosed very early in the onset of prameha (Madhumeha). In this category of patients , there can be those who are sthoola  (obese) and the origin of their disease is in apathyaja (poor living habbits)

Yapya: Patients under this catagory have Pittaja prameha & certain types of kaphaja prameha. However Yapya (palliable) helps control the disease with treatment.

Asadhya: Describes the incurable version of prameha (Madhumeha) & inherited diabetes.Sahaja patients suffering from this variety are Krisha (lean)

Involvement of Ojas in Prameha (Madhumeha)

Ojas is the essence of life, an extract of the seven dhathus (Elements) Rasa(Chyle), Rakta (Blood),Mamsa (Muscles), Majja(Marrow), Asthi (Bone), Meda (Brain & Spinal Cord), Sukra (Sperm & Ovum), Ojas (Mahadhatu=Superior Dhatu) represented as bala {strength }of the body. The ojus in a healthy person determines the physical, psychic, sensory motor functions of the body. The biochemical component of the body which is reddish, white, slightly yellowish in colour residing in heart and other vital organs of the body. If ojas is distrubed, degeneration will be fast and result in decreased life span. In prameha the ojas (life essence) is expunged from the body through all navadwaras especially through urine & sweat.

Ojas gets imbalanced in prameha in two ways:

  1. Through obstruction in blood vessels (srothorodha)
  2. Degeneration of the body components is dhatu kshaya this can cause both cardiac & nervous system disorders.all this is ojakshaya meaning an imbalance in Ojus.

Management of Prameha (Madhumeha)

According to Ayurveda the line of treatment of prameha is strictly on individual’s constitution.

1)      The prakrithi of the patient

2)      Dosha predominance of disease

3)      Dooshya vitiation

4)      Obstruction in srothus

5)      Manasika Prakrithi

6)      Ahara & Vihara

7)      Samskaras or Hereditary factors etc…

In general Diabetes Mellitus (Vathaja prameha) patients are advised to have Bhrimhana medication & diet which increases dhathus in the body.

  7. Drink a glass of water with 10 tulsi leaves, 10 belpatras and fenugreek leaves early in the morning on an empty stomach.

Yoga in Diabetes

Effectiveness of Yoga at preventing and treating diabetes is due to its emphasis of a healthy diet and lifestyle as well as its ability to balance the endocrine system, massage and tone the abdominal organs, stimulate the nervous and circulatory systems, and reduce stress. Pranayama or breathing exercises offer still greater hope.

Stress has been shown to play an important role in diabetes by elevating blood glucose levels and increasing the odds of developing certain complications, such as heart disease, stroke and infections. And having a chronic disease that requires major lifestyle changes and constant monitoring can be very stressful in itself. Research now shows that chronically elevated levels of cortisol (hormone produced by the stress response) can lead to blood sugar problems, insulin resistance, and diabetes. Yoga and meditation are the two best practices to reduce stress and yoga has been shown to dramatically lower cortisol levels in the body.

All steps of Ashtanga Yoga, viz., Yamas, Niyamas, Asanas, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharna, Dhyana and Samadhi, are important and should  be adhered to in the same order. In health or disease, it’s always better to know and choose yoga postures and pranayama exercises according to the prakriti and  vikriti of the person.

In general, exercise is a highly effective part of diabetes treatment because it increases insulin sensitivity and lowers blood sugar. Many studies have reported the beneficial effect of the practice of yoga on diabetes, confirming that the practice of postures can stimulate the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Yoga has also been proven helpful for weight management, blood sugar control, as well as lowering of the dosage of diabetic medications.

Yoga Postures

Surya Namaskar
Forward bends, twists and prone (belly down) poses all compress the abdomen to stimulate the pancreas, with prone poses being the most effective. Use forward bends and calming poses to reduce stress. In addition to acting on koshas and balancing chakras, yoga postures improve lymphatic circulation and hence body immunity. Yogic postures done with focus on breath, bandha, drishti and proper alignment are meditative and help in detoxification. Two reasons that yoga is particularly great for diabetes is that it:

  • Rejuvenates pancreatic cells, through alternate abdominal contractions and relaxation, during asanas (yogic postures which produce relaxation) and breathing exercises.
  • Reduces blood sugar due to muscular exercise involved in the asanas.

Some yogic postures provenly beneficial in diabetes are:

  1. Surya Namaskar (sun salutation)
  2. Setubandhasana (bridge pose)
  3. Pavanamuktasana (wind relieving pose)
  4. Trikonasana (triangle pose)
  5. Tadasana (mountain pose)
  6. Sukhasana (easy pose)
  7. Padmasana (lotus pose)
  8. Pashimottanasana (posterior stretch)
  9. Ardhmatsyendrasana (half spinal twist)
  10. Pawanmuktasana (joint freeing series)
  11. Bhujangasana (cobra pose)
  12. Vajrasana (thunderbolt pose)
  13. Dhanurasana (bow pose)
  14. Halasana (plow pose)
  15. Naukasana (boat pose)
  16. Bhujangasana (cobra pose)
  17. Shavasana (corpse pose)
  18. Anila Asana

Pranayama

pranayama2
Practice Pranayama to increase circulation of blood, oxygen and prana to facilitate healing and for stress reduction. Ashwin, the breath, is said to be the physician of gods. According to Vedas, it heals all maladies, with a name or without it. Recent years have witnessed a rise in interest in the healing powers of pranayama and myriad of studies have proven its positive effects on health. Pranayama has immense healing potential, and in expert hands, can work wonders. Pranayama is a great way to boost immunity. It is the bridge between the physical body and spiritual body and optimizes the flow of Prana. In general, some exercises like:

  • Bhastrika
  • Ujjayi
  • Kapal Bhati
  • Anulom Vilom
  • Moorchha
  • Vibhag Pranayama
  • Mahat Pranayama
  • Sama Vritti Pranayama
  • Visham Vritti Pranayama etc.

have been shown to help in diabetes. Please check the details of some breathing exercises here.

To offer the advantages of this yogic science of breathing, SAVY launched Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program ,a stepped program based on some very safe and healing breathing exercises in 2012.

Meditation

meditation
Meditation reduces stress, calms the mind and activates the body’s natural healing abilities. You can use one of the following by itself and/or at the beginning and end of yoga practice:

  • Yoga Meditation,
  • Third Eye Meditation
  • Prana Healing Meditation

Yoga Nutrition

Healthy Heat Eating

Diabetes has been linked to the western lifestyle, as it is rarely seen in cultures that consume a natural non-processed, non-refined diet. Because of the standard Western diet that is high in sugar and dead carbohydrates that turn to sugar, the pancreas becomes exhausted and the cells are overworked. A yogic diet that is high in fiber, whole grains, legumes and vegetables is recommended to lose excess weight and stabilize blood sugar levels. With the synergetic combination of yoga, regular aerobic exercise and healthy diet diabetes can be controlled and quiet often reduced or even cured.

Some studies on raw vegetarian diet claim miraculous results.

Marma Therapy

Marma Points

Marmas can also be called minor chakras; they are vital points in the body through which life energy flows. There are 108 marmas and they are classified into different groups. Some marmas are very important in diabetes, and if massaged with proper pressure/technique, order, oil, duration etc., can help a lot in prevention as well as relief. Some points for diabetes are :

  1. Indrabasti
  2. Hridaya marma
  3. Tala Hridaya
  4. Urvi Marma
  5. Stanarohita Marma
  6. Guda Marma

Activation of these and other important points by massage with specific herbal oils, medicated ghrita in a gentle manner with discrete motion is highly beneficial. All this must be undertaken under the strict supervision of a well-trained expert with actual experience.

Ayurvedic/ Yogic massage based on Marma Therapy is quite beneficial. This is done not only as a means to relieve stress but also for deeper therapeutic reasons. It assists in hormonal balance. Most masseurs are not trained in such specialized massage, so, finding a knowledgeable expert becomes very important.

Mudra Vigyan and Kriya Vigyan

yoga mudra

Various hand postures (hasta mudras) are said to have very beneficial effect in health and disease.

There are five hand mudras which are quite effective in diabetes. Practice for 45 minutes daily at a stretch or three times of 15 minutes each, depending on your comfort level.

1. Surya Mudra

‘Surya’ is a Sanskrit word that means ‘Sun’. Surya mudra is known to increase the fire within the human body that in turn ensures an optimised metabolic rate. Diabetics, in general, have poor metabolic rates which results in increased sugar levels and weight gain. Regular practice of this mudra will help boost metabolic rates, thus ensuring loss of weight and lowering of sugar levels. The mudra also helps easing indigestion and associated problems.

Method:

  1. Sit or stand straight.
  2. Stretch your hands to your front.
  3. Bend your ring finger so that it touches the root of thumb.
  4. Keep the other fingers spread out, apart from each other.

2. Pran Mudra

Known as the Mudra of Life, it helps in improving the vital force of life and activates your Mooladhara Chakra or root chakra. Thus, it empowers you wholly within. The mudra, when practiced without fail, helps in detoxifying your body. Practicing this mudra alongside Apan Mudra has been proven to offer relief to those suffering from diabetes.

Method:

  1. Sit down in a relaxed position, preferably, Padmasana (Lotus pose), with your eyes closed. Those who are uncomfortable in this position can opt for performing the mudra in Tadasana (Mountain Pose).
  2. Focus on your breathing.
  3. Keep your hands on your sides.
  4. Bend your little finger and ring finger to touch the thumb.
  5. Keep the index finger and middle finger straight.

Make sure that you perform this mudra with both the hands.

3. Apan Mudra

The mudra, also called the mudra of purification, is one of the easiest yoga mudras. It aids in striking a better balance between the elements within the human body. Thus, it ensures that the unwanted toxins are flushed out properly from your body. This mudra results in frequent urination for eliminating the wastes, thus lowering the blood sugar levels.

Method:

  1. Sit in Padmasana or Vajrasana. Those who have knee problems can opt for standing in Tadasana.
  2. Keep your hands stretched to your front.
  3. Bend your thumb, middle finger, and ring finger in such a way that their tips come together.
  4. Keep the little finger and index finger straight.

Make sure that you perform this mudra with both the hands. Combine this mudra with Vayu mudra and practice regularly for preventing and curing diabetes.

4. Gyan Mudra

Also known as Chin Mudra, it can be practiced by the diabetics to enjoy deep relaxation. It helps in relaxing the body and eliminating stress and other mind-related issues.

Method: The mudra, in general, is practiced alongside meditation poses.

  1. Choose a sitting position, such as Padmasana, Vajrasana or Sukhasana, depending on your ease of doing so. You can even choose Tadasana, if you can concentrate without any trouble. Those who find it difficult to follow any of the yoga asanas can opt for sitting relaxingly on a chair. Keep your eyes closed.
  2. Keep your back straight; head and chest should be held high. Focus on your breathing.
  3. Keep your palms on your knees. Palms should face upwards.
  4.  Bend the index finger to touch the thumb’s tip, while the rest of the fingers are kept straight.
  5. Performing this Mudra while chanting will yield more effective outcomes.

5. Linga Mudra

Lingam, in Sanskrit, means phallus – the male reproductive organ. This mudra is helpful for those who are suffering from diabetes. It helps in activating the fire element within the human body, thus generating intense heat. This, in turn, causes an increase in metabolic levels. The higher the metabolic levels, the more the chances of a person losing weight. This, automatically, lowers blood sugar levels, offering relief from diabetes.

Method:

  1. Sit down in Padmasana, Vajrasana or Sukhasana or choose to stand in Tadasana.
  2. Clasp your hands stretched in front of the body while keeping the fingers intertwined.
  3. The thumb of your left hand should point upward. Circle it with the right thumb and right index finger.
  4. Inhale and exhale normally and maintain the position for 15 minutes.

Nabho Mudra - Breathe and Heal

Nabho Mudra – Breathe and Heal

Also, Nabho mudra and Khechari mudra, when done properly along with certain Pranayamas, are said to have a curative effective.

ayurved

Panchakarma requires strict supervision by an expert. Shatkarma is a set of six detoxifying procedures, viz., Neti, Dhauti, Nyauli, Basti, Kapal Bhati, Tratak, which are said to remove the toxins from the body and thus help the body recover from any ailment.

NADA YOGA AND MANTRAS

All disorders in Ayurveda have been correlated to karmic influences. Hence chanting Mantras with appropriate gestures is very helpful. The selection of Mantras and time to chant depends on the natal chart and its interpretation.

Gayatri Mantra

Mantras influence the vibratory functions of cells and help them work in specific synchronization with the brain. Over a period of time it helps to cleanse the body of toxins. These therapies must be followed with strict guidelines of diet and lifestyle.

VEDIC ASTROLOGY AND GEMSTONES

Gemstone therapy and Vedic astrology have been shown to be useful in diabetes.According to Astrology, planetary Combinations which causes Diabetes are:

  • Two or Three Malefic Planets if posited in Watery Signs
  • Two or Three Malefic Planets posited in the 6th House.
  • Two of Three Malefic Planets posited in Libra or in 7th house
  • Moon afflicted by Sun or Mars in Watery Signs
  • Venus afflicted by Sun or Mars in Watery Signs
  • If the 6th lord is posited in 8th or vice versa

Astrologically, Diabetes can be cured by wearing two gems:

  1. Red coral, and
  2. Yellow sapphire.

There are certain rules for wearing the stone:

1. The Gemstones shall be worn in silver.
2. Gemstones shall be energized by purification.
3. The Gemtones shall be worn in right hand.
4. Gemstones can be worn in a single pendant where Yellow Sapphire shall be fitted on the right hand side and Red Coral on the left hand side.

Claiming Your Breast Health Back

Beat the Beast series, based on Yoga, Pranayama, Nada, Marmas, Meditation and more, offers immense healing potential for the body, mind and spirit.

Breast cancer is a complex disease that will affect 1 in 8 (1 in 9, in Canada) women during their lifetime. Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer diagnosis in women in Canada over the age of 20 and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canadian women, after lung cancer. However, fewer women in Canada are dying from breast cancer today than in the past. In addition, there are minor diseases of breasts too which this workshop intends to address.

The Overall and Personal Cost of Breast Cancer

Every year many people suffer from ill effects and even physical incapacity, fatigue, time off work or school with a poor quality of life, ongoing financial expenses and a deteriorating condition. Other than loss of income to family members, there are costs incurred by women with breast cancer and their families. Informal costs, such as the family labor for patient care and non-reimbursed out-of-pocket expenditures to care for the patient with breast cancer, need to be considered. Family care costs need to be considered along with the formal and direct reimbursable medical costs as an essential component of breast cancer care cost.

Yoga for Breast Cancer

yoga for breast health SOME FACTS ABOUT BREAST CANCER

  1. The highest incidence of breast cancer is found in Finland, Sweden, Great Britain, Canada and the United States, countries with a high level in milk consumption.
  2. Breast cancer is practically not present in societies where animal milk is not consumed, especially in Eastern countries.
  3. There is evidence to suggest that wearing tight bras for prolonged hours daily increases the risk of breast cancer. Women who wear bra 24 hours a day may face up to 125-times higher cancer risk.
  4. No breasts are perfectly symmetrical, shapes and sizes of each pair may vary.
  5. Fibrous and fatty tissue in the breast is normal. Changes in breast texture and ptosis are a part of moving through the years.
  6. There is no family history of breast cancer in 80% of breast cancer cases.
  7. 90% of breast lumps are not malignant. But they should always be checked. Early detection of breast cancer is vitally important.
  8. Mammograms are tools for early detection, not prevention.
  9. Breast cancer incidence increased by 50% when hydrogenated oils (i.e. margarine) became common in diets.

WHAT IS BREAST CANCER?

Cancer can be explained as abnormal growth of cells due to uncontrolled division. Breast cancer is a malignant tumour that starts in the cells of the breast; malignant means that it can spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body. Most often, breast cancer starts in cells that line the ducts, which are the tubes that carry milk from the glands to the nipple; this type of breast cancer is called ductal carcinoma. Cancer can also start in the cells of the lobules, which are the groups of glands that form milk; this type of cancer is called lobular carcinoma. Both ductal carcinoma and lobular carcinoma can be in situ, which means that the cancer is still where it started and has not grown into surrounding tissues. They can also be invasive, which means they have grown into surrounding tissues. Less common types of breast cancer can also develop. These include inflammatory breast cancer, Paget disease of the nipple and triple negative and basal-like breast cancers. Rare types of breast cancer include non-Hodgkin lymphoma and sarcoma. Every cell contains a DNA which is copied into the new cell; in cancer, there are mistakes in copying. There are error-correcting proteins in cells which prevent these mistakes and render an exact copy. When mutations occur in these error-correcting proteins they cause cancers which may cause enhanced multiplication. These mutations can manifest as errors in enzymes or specific markers like p53, BRCA1, BRCA2 in case of breast cancers. Mutations can be inherited or acquired. Breast Anatomy

1-Chest Wall; 2-Pectoralis major; 3-Lobule; 4-Nipple; 5-Areola; 6-Lactiferous duct; 7-Fatty tissue; 8-Skin

Cancer cells keep on replicating as opposed to normal cells which die after their purpose is served. To ensure that the cell completes its life span there are protective pathways, like P13K/AKT or RAS/MEK/ERK pathway. Mutations may also occur along this pathways, like the PTEN protein which turns the pathway off for each cell when the cell is required to die.

PRESENTATION

The first sign of breast cancer often is a breast lump or an abnormal mammogram. You might feel a firm, not necessarily painful, lump in your breast while showering or doing a regular breast self-exam. Also lumps in the armpits are a warning sign. While a lump is the most common sign of breast cancer, other noncancerous conditions, like cysts, can also cause breast lumps. Women with a rare form of the disease called inflammatory breast cancer can develop a red, pink, or purple rash across part of their breast. The skin of the breast might also appear puckered, like the skin of an orange, peau d’orange. If you notice an unusual lump in your breast, report it to your doctor and have it checked.

Male breast cancer is not uncommon and must be taken seriously. breast cancer To summarize, signs of possible breast cancer are:

  • A lump
  • Ongoing pain
  • Size changes or swelling
  • Redness, rashes or crusting in the breast, armpit or collarbone areas
  • Changes in the nipples – discharge or inversion
  • Puckering of the skin.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTS
Breast examination can be done by self or by a trained medical practitioner. Mammogram, which uses a series of X-rays to show images of your breast tissue, is currently the best imaging technique for detecting tumors. Ultrasound uses sound waves, which bounce off the breast to create a picture of the tissue inside. An ultrasound is not used to screen for breast cancer; it can help spot tumors in dense breasts that don’t show up clearly on a mammogram. An ultrasound can also help the doctor find out whether a growth discovered during a mammogram or breast exam is cancerous. Biopsy, where a small amount of the lump material or fluid is excised with the help of a needle and examined under the microscope. FNAC (Fine-needle aspiration and cytology) is the most common form of biopsy where a thin, hollow needle is used to withdraw cells from the lump and is sent to the lab for analysis. Surgical biopsy which is the most accurate method for confirming cancer. The surgeon removes a part (incisional biopsy) or whole (excisional biopsy) of the breast lump depending on the size and sent to the lab for histo-pathological examination. Estrogen and progesterone receptor tests is done if the biopsy confirms the cancer. This test helps determine the treatment protocol.

TNM Staging (Tumours, Nodes, Metastasis) is used to find the breast cancer stage. Breast cancer stages range from early, curable breast cancer to metastatic breast cancer. After breast cancer is diagnosed, doctors do tests to find out whether cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. Then they assign a stage, which helps them treat the cancer. In stages 0 and 1, the cancer hasn’t spread beyond the breast. Stage 2 cancer may have spread to the lymph nodes. Stage 3 tumors have spread to the lymph nodes, and possibly the chest wall. Stage 4 means cancer has reached other, remote parts of the body.

METASTASIS

Metastasis is a process when the cancer cells spread through the blood stream and get localized at other organs and cause secondary tumors. Common sites include bone, liver, lung and brain. The manifestation can be known by bone or joint pain, unexplained weight loss, jaundice, neurological symptoms etc.

TREATMENTS AVAILABLE

Breast cancers that are influenced by hormones estrogen and progesterone are treated with HRT (Hormone replacement therapy) and radiation . Surgery is performed where the tumors are devoid of hormone receptors. Surgical procedure can vary from simple Lumpectomy (removal of lump) to partial or complete removal of the breasts (simple mastectomy , partial or segmental mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy). Breast reconstructive surgery is offered for women after radical mastectomy. Surgery is generally followed by chemotherapy and radiation.

RISK FACTORS

  1. Drinking alcohol: Drinking alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed.
  2. Being overweight or obese: Being overweight or obese after menopause increases breast cancer risk. Higher estrogen levels and higher blood insulin levels have been linked to some cancers, including breast cancer.
  3. Drinking Milk: Breast cancer is practically not present in societies where animal milk is not consumed, especially in Eastern countries. Consumption of more than 2 glassfuls of milk has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer.
  4. Physical activity: Evidence is growing that physical activity in the form of exercise, even as little as 1¼ to 2½ hours per week of brisk walking, reduces breast cancer risk. To reduce your risk of breast cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week (or a combination of these), preferably spread throughout the week.
  5. Having children: Women who have not had children or who had their first child after age 30 have a slightly higher breast cancer risk overall.
  6. Birth control: Studies have found that women using oral contraceptives (birth control pills) have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer than women who have never used them. Once the pills are stopped, this risk seems to go back to normal over time. Women currently using birth-control shots seem to have an increase in breast cancer risk, but it appears that there is no increased risk in women 5 years after they stop getting the shots. Birth control implants, IUD, skin patch, vaginal ring also use hormones that could fuel breast cancer growth.
  7. Hormone therapy after menopause: Hormone therapypost-menopausal hormone therapy(PHT), hormone replacement therapy (HRT), or menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) or just estrogen therapy (ET), Combined hormone therapy (HT) after menopause increases the risk of breast cancer. The use of bioidentical hormone therapy should be thought to have the same health risks as any other type of hormone therapy. Long term use of estrogen therapy (ET) has been found to increase the risk of ovarian and breast cancer in some studies.
  8. Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding may slightly lower breast cancer risk, especially if it’s continued for 1½ to 2 years.
Having one or many risk factors does not mean that you are sure to get the disease.

  • Being a woman: Simply being a woman is the main risk factor for breast cancer. Breast caner is about 100 times more common in women than in men.
  • Getting older: Most invasive breast cancers are found in women age 55 and older.
  • Certain inherited genes: About 5% to 10% of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary, meaning that they result directly from gene defects (called mutations) passed on from a parent. Genetic testing can be done to look for mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2genes (or less commonly in other genes such as PTEN or TP53).
    • BRCA1 and BRCA2: The most common cause of hereditary breast cancer is an inherited mutation in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. In normal cells, these genes help prevent cancer by making proteins that help keep the cells from growing abnormally. In some families with BRCA1 mutations the lifetime risk of breast cancer is as high as 80%, but on average this risk seems to be in the range of 55% to 65%. For BRCA2 mutations the risk is lower, around 45%. Breast cancers linked to these mutations are more often found in younger women and more often in both breasts than cancers not linked to these mutations. Women with these inherited mutations also have a higher risk of developing other cancers, mainly ovarian cancer. In the United States, BRCA mutations are more common in Jewish people of Ashkenazi (Eastern Europe) origin than in other racial and ethnic groups, but anyone can have them.
    • Changes in other genes: These gene mutations are much less common and most of them do not increase the risk of breast cancer as much as the BRCA genes. They are seldom causes of inherited breast cancer.
    •  ATM: Inheriting one abnormal copy of this gene has been linked to a high rate of breast cancer in some families.
    •  TP53: People with Li-Fraumeni syndrome caused by this gene have an increased risk of breast cancer, as well as some other cancers such as leukemia, brain tumors, and sarcomas (cancers of bones or connective tissue).
    •  CHEK2: Li-Fraumeni syndrome can also be caused by inherited mutations in the CHEK2gene.
    •  PTEN: Mutations in this gene causes Cowden syndrome, a rare disorder that puts people at higher risk for both non-cancer and cancer tumors in the breasts, as well as growths in the digestive tract, thyroid, uterus, and ovaries.
    •  CDH1: Women with mutations in this gene also have an increased risk of invasive lobular breast cancer.
    •  STK11: People with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome caused by inherited mutation of this gene have pigmented spots on their lips and in their mouths, polyps in the urinary and gastrointestinal tracts, and a higher risk of many types of cancer, including breast cancer.
    •  PALB2: Mutations in PALB2 gene can lead to a higher risk of breast cancer.
  • Having a family history of breast cancer: Most women (about 8 out of 10) who get breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease, but women who have close blood relatives with breast cancer have a higher risk of the disease, having a first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) with breast cancer almost doubles a woman’s risk, and women with a father or brother who have had breast cancer also have a higher risk of breast cancer.
  • Having a personal history of breast cancer: A woman with cancer in one breast has a higher risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast or in another part of the same breast.
  • Your race and ethnicity: White women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer. African-American, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American women have a lower risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Having dense breast tissue: Women with dense breasts on mammogram have a risk of breast cancer that is 1.2 to 2 times that of women with average breast density.
  • Certain benign breast conditions: Women diagnosed with certain benign breast conditions may have a higher risk of breast cancer. Proliferative lesions without atypia (cell abnormalities) like Usual ductal hyperplasia (without atypia), Fibroadenoma, Sclerosing adenosis, Several papillomas (called papillomatosis) and Radial scar seem to raise a woman’s risk of breast cancer slightly. Proliferative lesions with atypia, like Atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) and Atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH), raise breast cancer risk by 3½ to 5 times higher. Women with lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) have a much higher risk of developing cancer in either breast.
  • Starting menstruation (periods) before age 12: Women who started menstruating early (before age 12) have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer.
  • Going through menopause after age 55: Women who had menopause later (after age 55) have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer.
  • Having radiation to your chest: Women who as children or young adults were treated with radiation therapy to the chest for another cancer (such as Hodgkin disease or non-Hodgkin lymphoma) have a significantly higher risk for breast cancer.
  • Exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES): Women who took DES during pregnancy may also have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer.
There are some things that might be risk factors for breast cancer, but the research is not yet clear about whether there really is a link.

  1. Diet and Vitamins: A diet low in fat, low in red meat and processed meat, and high in fruits and vegetables has health benefits. Studies have found that breast cancer is less common in countries where the typical diet is low in total fat, low in polyunsaturated fat, and low in saturated fat. It’s clear that calories do count, and fat is a major source of calories.
  2. Chemicals in the environment: Compounds in the environment that have estrogen-like properties, for example, substances found in some plastics, certain cosmetics and personal care products, pesticides, and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) could affect breast cancer risk.
  3. Tobacco smoke: Studies have shown that heavy smoking over a long-time is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer.  Secondhand smoke contains chemicals that, in high concentrations, may cause breast cancer.
  4. Night work: Some studies have suggested that women who work at night, such as nurses on a night shift, might have an increased risk of breast cancer.
There are many factors that research has shown are not linked to breast cancer.

  1. Antiperspirants: Based on the available evidence, there is little reason to believe that antiperspirants increase the risk of breast cancer.
  2. Bras: Some literature has suggested that bras cause breast cancer by obstructing lymph flow. Wired bras are also linked to higher risk. Though some literature suggests higher risk with the prolonged use of bras, there is no good scientific or clinical support for this claim.
  3. Induced abortion: Studies have provided very strong data that neither induced abortions nor spontaneous abortions have an overall effect on the risk of breast cancer.
  4. Breast implants: Several studies have found that breast implants do not increase the risk of breast cancer, although silicone breast implants can cause scar tissue to form in the breast.

AT RISK POPULATION

The disease rarely affects women under 25 years of age. 1 in every 8 women is at the risk of developing cancer sometime in life. Lack of child bearing or breast feeding, late pregnancy are risk factors. Caucasian women are more likely to develop breast cancer than are black or Hispanic women. High fat diet, alcohol intake, tobacco use, exposure to radiation, genetic susceptibility (BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations) and parental history, overuse of contraceptive pills, hormone replacement therapy are additional risk factors.

AYURVEDA/ YOGA PERSPECTIVE

Tumor is described in the 11th Chapter of “Nidan Sthan” of the noted Ayurveda scripture “Sushrut Samhita” as:

Gatra Pradese Kwacita Deva Dosa¡, Samurchita Mansamabhipradusya |
Vrattam Sthiram Mandarujam Mahantamanalpamulam Ciravraddhayapakam||
Kurvanti Mansopacayam Ca Ïopham, Tadarbudam Ïastravido Vadanti |
Vatena, Pittena, Kaphena Capi, Raktena Mansena Ca Medasa Va ||
Tajjayate Tasya Ca Lakshanani, Granthe¡ Samanani Sada Bhavanti |

Meaning

In some part of the body, the excess of vata and other doshas cause unusual growth which may consist of flesh and tissues, which may or may not cause little pain but spreads deeper inside and imbalances the important dhatus (chemicals), and which does not burst on its own and matures slowly. This arbuda looks like a granthi (knot or hard acne) and which is a manifestation of abnormal tridoshas (vata, pitta and kapha) and infected blood, myoplams/tissues (majja), flesh or any cells. It may sometimes be caused by infections (leading to tridoshaj imbalance and abnormal changes) in a wounded or internally injured part of the body, which malign the blood, serum, lymph, or body tissues, etc.

Breast cancer is loosely correlated to the reference of Stana Arbuda mentioned in Ayurveda texts (Stan = Breast, Arbud == hard lump ) by certain scholars. Stan Arbud is categorized as per Dosha :

  • Vata type
  • Pitta type
  • Kapha type
  • Vata, pitta and kapha type or Tridoshaj

Uncontrolled growth of cells occurs from Vata derangement. The process of cells transforming into mutated ones happens because of Pitta imbalance. The inability of the cells to complete their life span and die or go on without perishing can be termed as Kapha imbalance. These stages can occur individually or in combination (Tridoshaj). Breast cancers, or for that matter, any cancer, occurs because of enzyme disruption and/ or mutations in the body. Certain mutations may be Karmic (genetic dispositions) but most of them are acquired due to our ignorance and lack of knowledge about food and lifestyles. Erratic eating habits disrupt and cause enzymatic changes. It is recommended in most ancient cultures to be at ease and refrain from any physical work for first 3 days of menstrual cycles to establish a good blood flow. Having sex at the right age releases certain enzymes in your body that promote health. A good sexual intercourse activates the chakras which helps promote health. Proper implementation of knowledge of Tantra Yoga is a great preventive and remedial measure to hormonal disorders. The management of Breast Cancer is done at all the five levels of the Pancha Kosha.

Annamaya Kosha Yoga postures like Surya Namaskar, Shalabhasana, Naukasana, Simhasana, Dhanurasana. Relaxation and Balancing Techniques like Yoga Nidra, Marma Therapy. Kriyas like Shatkarma. Mudras like Gyan Mudra, Nabho Mudra, Ayurvedic medicines and herbs etc.
Pranamaya Kosha Nadishodana Pranayama, Suryabhedana Pranayama, Kapaal Bhaati Pranayama and Bhramari Pranayama etc.
Manomaya Kosha Concentrative or Mindful Meditation through breath, AUM meditation, Nada Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Tantra Yoga etc
Vignanamaya Kosha Conceptual corrections and Yogic Counseling
Anandamaya Kosha Discovering bliss through karma etc

YOGA/ AYURVEDA RECOMMENDATIONS

Three-fold approach to treatment is recommended:

  1. Aaahar (good diet)
  2. Vihaar (good lifestyle)
  3. Aushadhi (medicine).

These have to be followed in the same order.

Aahar

In Yoga/ Ayurvedic Nutrition, aahaar (diet) is decided individually, according to types and sub-types of constitution of every person. Still, some general guidelines can be followed by everyone:

Eat at proper time, have fruits for breakfast or dinner at least 3 times a week. Whole fruits should be eaten (no juices except Pomegranate) without adding salt or sugar. Unripe fruits must not be consumed. Fruits should never be combined with milk. Dairy products should be avoided or at least their consumption should be reduced. Also fruits should not be eaten after meals except banana which should not be consumed on empty stomach. Lunch should comprise of whole grains cooked properly. The use of microwave and other unnatural ways of cooking must be avoided. One should not sleep after meals. One should not eat after sunset. Eating immediately before sleeping interferes with GH secretion and hence the repair processes of body. Go to bed around 10 pm. Staying awake between 1 am and 2 am deranges melatonin secretion and increases risk of cancer. One should get up before sunrise. Avoid extra salt and refined sugar.

Fasting

Fasting has always been a part of the Vedic culture. It has been many health benefits.  A recent study confirmed that fasting for three days can regenerate entire immune system! Several studies have also confirmed the benefits of fasting.

One characteristic of cancer cells is that they need up to 30 times more food than a normal cell. Just by denying yourself food on certain days, you could put down the level of cancerous cells. In every ‘mandala‘ of 40-48 day, human body does not need food for three days. In general, ekadashi, or 11th day, after full moon and new moon is more suitable for fasting. Fasting on these days opens doors to health and spiritual growth.

Vihaar should be according to Yamas and Niyamas, which should be followed by everyone. They guide us about ways to lead a stress-free life.

YOGA

Yoga helps in all form of cancers. Yoga is important for prevention as well as an adjunct in therapy. Studies have proven the beneficial role of yoga in prevention as well as during treatment.

YOGA POSTURES

Surya Namaskar In addition to acting on koshas and balancing chakras, yoga postures improve lymphatic circulation and hence body immunity. Yogic postures done with focus on breath, bandha, drishti and proper alignment are meditative and help in detoxification. Some yogic postures beneficial in breast cancer are:

  • Paschimottanasana
  • Shalabhasana
  • Naukasana
  • Simhasana
  • Dhanurasana
  • Surya Namaskar etc.

Shakti Chalana Kriya we teach, also help in correcting and balancing the energy system.

PRANAYAMA

Meditation Ashwin, the breath, is said to be the physician of gods. Some exercises like:

  • Ujjayi
  • Bhastrika
  • Kapal Bhati
  • Anulom Vilom
  • Vibhag Pranayama
  • Mahat Pranayama
  • Sama Vritti Pranayama
  • Visham Vritti Pranayama etc.

have been shown to help in cancer. Please check the details of some breathing exercises here. To offer the advantages of this yogic science of breathing, SAVY launched Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program ,a stepped program based on some very safe and healing breathing exercises, more than a year back. Fight Cancer program at SAVY, which has a very safe and stepped program of breathing exercises – DSBH Therapy , at its crux, is a very safe program for cancer care – for prevention, as adjunct therapy of cancer patients, cancer survivors and even for families of cancer patients.

MEDITATION

meditation Meditation acts at deeper levels of the mind and detoxifies all koshas. Meditation technique should be chosen carefully. Even simple Concentrative Meditation Techniques (CM), like focusing on breath, sound, mantra, image, TM etc., have been found to be useful in cancer care. Mindfulness meditation (MM) also has been shown to have very positive effect in health and recovery. A recent study confirmed the beneficial role of Yoga and meditation in breast cancer patients. At SAVY, we have been working on Yoga with Intention in Meditation, in which the intention to heal is introduced while the subject is in a meditative stage. It has a much deeper healing effect.

MARMA THERAPY AND MASSAGE

Marma Points Marmas can also be called minor chakras; they are vital points in the body through which life energy flows. There are 108 marmas and they are classified into different groups. Some marmas are very important in breast disorders, and if massaged with proper pressure/technique, order, oil, duration etc., can help a lot in prevention as well as relief. Some of these points are :

  1. Apalapa marma
  2. Hridaya marma
  3. Apastambha marma
  4. Kukundar Marma
  5. Stana Mula
  6. Stana Parshva etc.

Activation of these and other important points by massage with specific herbal oils, medicated ghrita in a gentle manner with discrete motion is highly beneficial. All this must be undertaken under the strict supervision of a well-trained expert with actual experience.   Ayurvedic/ Yogic massage based on Marma Therapy has always included extensive work on the breast area for women. This is done not only as a means to beautify the breast, encourage a delightful shape and for greater comfort but also for deeper therapeutic reasons. It teaches that massage over and around breast tissue improves or helps maintain health in all parts of female reproductive tissue as well as assists in hormonal balance. Most masseurs are either not trained in such specialized massage and/or will not do it because of the fear of sexual harassment suits. Most agree, however, that it is therapeutic and beneficial. indian head massage Recently, some studies have documented the role of breast massages in breast cancer prevention. Also, these massages may offer relief in post-operative complications.

AYURVEDA MEDICINES

ayurved med Ayurveda medicines are very helpful in all stages of this disease and can help improve quality of life. Selection of medicines is done on the basis of prakriti and vikriti after proper assessment. Regular use of turmeric cuts your chances of getting breast cancer by 50%. Neem also helps in keeping the number of cancer cells in the body in check. Some medicines can also to be applied externally, like: Aloe vera root, Jasmine, Pomegranate juice mixed with mustard/sesame oil, Terminalia chebula fruit powder, Manjistha, Raktachandan and grape juice. Herbs like Symplocos racemosa, Semecarpus anacardiuum, Moringa oleifera, Oroxylum indium etc are used by physicians in form of external application. These herbs require supervision.

MUDRA VIGYAN AND KRIYA VIGYAN
Various hand postures (hasta mudras) are said to have very beneficial effect in health and disease. Gayatri mudras, a set of 32 hand postures to be performed with chanting of Gayatri Mantra, is said to have a very beneficial effect in cases of cancer.  yoga mudra Also, Nabho mudra and Khechari mudra, when done properly along with certain Pranayamas, are said to have a curative effective in cancer. ayurved Panchakarma requires strict supervision by an expert. Interestingly Snehana, i.e., intake of various medicated oil preparations in a classical way a week or 10 days prior to the start of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, has been found to reduce the toxic effects of such therapies.

Gayatri Mantra Mantras influence the vibratory functions of cells and help them work in specific synchronization with the brain. Over a period of time it helps to cleanse the body of toxins. These therapies must be followed with strict guidelines of diet and lifestyle.

VEDIC ASTROLOGY AND GEMSTONES

astrology Gemstone therapy and Vedic astrology have been shown to be useful in cancers. Blue sapphire has been found to be most useful.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  1. Do Yoga regularly. Yoga has been shown to go a long way in boosting immunity.
  2. Learn breathing exercises from a knowledgeable teacher and practice them regularly. Pranayama has been shown to have a lot of healing effect.
  3. Practice breast self-massage as well as use professional help. Marma massages, done properly, help with circulation and lymphatic drainage, and open up blockages in energy channels.
  4. Exercise regularly using movements that involve the shoulders and build torso and upper arm strength.
  5. Wear comfortable, natural fiber (i.e. cotton) undergarments. Bras that have underwires or that are strapless should not be used as they allow toxins to accumulate in breast tissue.
  6. Use aluminium-free deodorant. Empirical studies show that aluminum can enter the blood and lymph systems through the skin and severely challenge the immune system.
  7. Avoid alcohol. Having even one drink per day increases breast cancer risk, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal.
  8. Avoid hydrogenated fats like margarine and vegetable shortening.
  9. Eat a vegetarian diet with little or no saturated or mono-saturated fats, refined sugars, dairy products, meats, and caffeine, and high in whole grains (i.e. brown rice, oats, barley) , green and orange vegetables (i.e. carrots, squashes, kale, broccoli, cabbage, etc.).
  10. Grapes and grape-based products have shown cancer chemopreventive potential and are also known to improve overall human health.
  11. Eat soy-based products, such as soy milk, tofu, and tempeh occasionally.
  12. Choose to eat organic foods and use environmentally friendly cleaning products. Many synthetic chemicals (including what is found in fertilizers, pesticides. germicides) mimic hormones and cause physical and emotional havoc.
  13. Use supplements such as vitamins E, C, and B-complex as well as minerals. Eat mineral-rich sea vegetables or take mineral supplements particularly when your stress level is high.
  14. Use hormone-free contraception. Avoid long-term use of the pill and synthetic hormone therapies when possible.
  15. Expose your breasts to sun and moon light.
  16. Sleep in complete darkness. Light interferes with melatonin secretion.
  17. Color TVs, microwave ovens, and computer screens emit radiation that may cause damage to tissues.
  18. Each body type has its own, unique beauty. Seek that out in yourself and become it.
  19. Sensuality and sexuality are not the enemy of spirituality. Celebrate life!

BREATHING EXERCISES

Free Information Talks on Breathing Exercises for Therapy

SAVY INTERNATIONAL

Hi there!

Modern Science is validating amazing results of breathing exercises! Usefulness of Yoga Therapy programs in treatment is being documented through various studies.  recent medical study concluded that Yoga breathing (Pranayama) was a feasible intervention among patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy; pranayama may improve sleep disturbance, anxiety, and mental quality of life and a dose-response relationship was found between pranayama use and improvements in chemotherapy-associated symptoms and quality of life.

It gives me immense pleasure to introduce Yoga services at SAVY International Inc. An ISLAND OF EXCELLENCE for Yoga, SAVY International Inc., in operation since 2011,  is an incorporated Canadian business and is a registered yoga school accredited RYS-200 and RYS-300 levels by Yoga Alliance, USA. We offer our services under one of the most qualified & experienced faculty in the world. Please check out SAVY Storyline to know about our journey so far.

DSBH Therapy, or Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Therapy is the First Canadian Yogic  Breathing Exercises program designed for therapy, which helps achieve freedom from diseases and to attain positive health. This is also one of the very few breathing exercises programs in the world which offer training in yogic breathing exercises in a well-structured, stepped and safe way. Based on time-tested yoga techniques, including some very potent and effective breathing exercises validated by the stringent test of time, and a fruit of over three decades of laborious and painstaking clinical research and refinement in India, this program is one of the safest, most scientific and the most effective breathing exercises programs based on qualified medical and yoga expertise! It is the first, and so far the only, program in the world, to offer the benefits of Breathing Exercises, Surya-Yoga and other lesser known elements of yoga together for asthma, breathing problems, heart problems, cancer care and other major and minor diseases.

We also launched DSBH Breathing Educator program, again, the First Canadian Breathing Educator program, to prepare DSBH Breathing Educators who’ll impart the knowledge about breathing exercises throughout Canada and the world in a safe and effective way.

Some of the recent studies have proved the following benefits of Pranayama, the science of breathing:

    •  Brain Growth and increase in grey matter
    • Improve concentration and mental focus
    • Prevent Heart Attack
    • Lower Stress
    • Get rid of Negative Emotions
    • Alleviate anxiety & depression
    • Effectively reduced performance anxiety
    • Reduce Examination/ Stage Phobia
    • Lower Blood Pressure
    • Favourable Gene Expression
    • Enhanced body immunity
    • Healthy Aging
    • Improve health
    • Amazing role in healing diseases
    • Bestow joy, peace and happiness
    • Awaken, balance and heal the chakras
    • Increase energy, vitality and awareness
    • Help break bad habits
    • Help manifest desires and intentions, with better focus
    • And many more benefits to be documented!

You can find links to some of these studies on Dr Sahdev’s’ Breathe and Heal’ Therapy page.

We offer interactive Free Information Talks which provide background on DSBH Therapy based on  clinically-proven breathing exercises, how to recognize symptoms of poor breathing, what healthy breathing looks like and how to improve breathing immediately. This talk can be tailored to the needs of various support groups and adjusted for time limitations from 15 minutes to 1 hour.

We also offer training in breathing exercises in a safe and stepped manner in Private sessions, small groups or workshops. From time to time, we hold workshops on different diseases based on breathing exercises.

These talks can be held at a physical location or on-line.

Stress

Stress and Anxiety Care Workshop

Stress

Bringing your nervous system back into balance

Stress is necessary for life. Like finely-tuned strings of a guitar, you need stress for creativity, learning, and your very survival. Stress is harmful only when it becomes overwhelming and interrupts the healthy state of equilibrium that your nervous system needs to remain in balance. Unfortunately, overwhelming stress has become an increasingly common characteristic of contemporary life.

Click here to read post on Breathing Exercises for Stress,Anxiety,Insomnia, with Immediate Relief.

What do I learn in a Stress and Anxiety Care Workshop?

You will learn about stress, anxiety, their symptoms, their pathogenesis according to Modern Medicine and the Yoga/ Ayurveda perspective. You’ll also be given an overview of all major modalities of treatment available. You’ll be given an overview of the role of mindfulness and breathing exercises in these diseases. We’ll introduce you to a system of mindfulness and breathing retraining which delivers immediate and sustained improvement for people with stress and/ or anxiety, based on DSBH Therapy and Dr. Sahdev’s clinical work in India spanning over three decades. This system is:

  • Scientific basis – based on the standard medical principles of respiration, guidelines of the science of breathing-Pranayama and supported by research
  • Natural – it’s all natural and no supplements, vitamins, pills are advised
  • Drug-free – categorically no drugs are involved in any form
  • Potent – as medical research into their effectivity has shown so far, these methods are quite effective and potent, and in good hands and with proper guidance, success rate is quite predictable
  • Effective – these breathing exercises significantly decrease stress, anxiety, insomnia symptoms
  • Safe – we follow international best practice guidelines

How is it beneficial to me?

Stress and Anxiety Care Workshop will give you an overview of stress and anxiety management and introduce you to some basic breathing exercises in DSBH Therapy (full program offered in separate workshops) for  breathing re-training which is completely natural, safe, potent, effective and totally drug-free. You receive advice on management of stress and anxiety. If you are suffering from Insomnia, Panic Attacks or Sleep Apnoea the appropriate advice will be applicable to improve these specific conditions too. The Workshop teaches you breathing techniques and strategies which help you to optimise breathing. The aim is to learn breathing patterns to help you become a normal healthy person again. Normalising the breathing pattern in this way results in a decline in symptoms and need for medication.

Expected Outcome with exercises in DSBH Therapy

  • Significant reduction in/or elimination of stress and anxiety medications
  • Significant reduction in/or elimination of stress and anxiety symptoms and attacks
  • Decreased reliance on/or elimination of, sleep apnoea appliances such as CPAP machines and mandibular advancement splints.
  • Symptomatic relief of other psycho-somatic disorders
  • Increased stamina and energy levels, better work performance, improved sleep
  • Decreased stress levels, increased happiness

Who does this workshop help?

The workshop is most useful for those people who are prepared to take time and responsibility to control their problems. The workshop will be useful to anybody who can follow instructions, do breathing exercises and wants to learn more about his/ her problems and is open to newer medically-documented solutions. It is useful for people with all types and degrees of severity of stress and anxiety as well as people with other disorders such as insomnia, snoring, sleep apnoea and panic attacks. It is also effective in reducing chronic fatigue.  It works for those who are and remain willing and motivated to act upon the advice given in the workshop.

 STRESS

The Personal Cost of Stress and Anxiety and related conditions

More than 80% diseases are psycho-somatic. Every year many people with stress and anxiety-related conditions suffer from ill effects and even physical incapacity, fatigue, time off work or school with a poor quality of life, ongoing financial expenses and a deteriorating condition. People with SLEEP APNOEA have an increased risk for cardiovascular illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart attack and strokes, and in addition, SLEEP APNOEA is associated with a higher risk for road accidents due to daytime sleepiness. Learning DSBH Therapy will provide you with the knowledge and skills to get back your health and your life.

What does Stress and Anxiety Care Workshop entail?

Stress and Anxiety Care Workshop consists of two hours of teaching. Clients learn some exercises to retrain their breathing to enable them to breathe correctly. Improvement generally commences within the first 24 hours.

50 PLUS

SAVY 50+ Yoga – Yoga for the 50 Plus

 50+ Yoga

“First, follow the truth, and then truth will follow you…. In the beginning, it is true that confidence and trust are necessary, but as you continue to practice, every step will bring more and more hope and greater confidence. If we are Yogis just even for one day, we will be transformed for ever and would want more of it.”

-The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, 2.36

If you are 50+, yoga is certainly for you!

By the time you reach 50, your heart has beaten more than 1.5 billion times, your lungs have taken over 400 million breaths, you’ve laughed, loved, won, and lost.

One thing you never want to lose is your health.

The human body is a durable machine. It operates without interruption, day after day, year after year. But are you taking the right steps to keep this vital machine as healthy as possible through mid-life and beyond?

At SAVY, we guide you to maintain and improve your health! We offer some very specialised, effective programs for mature adults, viz., programs for 50+, Part-time Personnel, Retired Personnel and Seniors.

Mature adults have always received a very warm welcome in our classes; some of them come to recover from years of neglect of their bodies or the assault of years of intense exercise, or of practising unsuitable pseudo-yoga routines, while others join in to prevent heart disease and osteoporosis and the general rigidity and weakness that may set in with age, and some are there even to actually recover from these problems and more serious health issues. While we have always had some yoga classes dedicated to the health of 50+ group, by introducing 50 Plus Yoga, we’ll be earmarking more classes which are more suitable for those around 50 or more mature adults, though they are always welcome to join us in any of our classes.

50+ Yoga can make you relax within a few minutes. Its effect penetrates the physical, mental and spiritual levels. This consists of gentle stretching and coordinated breathing, and breathing exercises, that result in deep relaxation. It includes easy exercises for the eyes, tongue and jaws, neck, hands, feet, knees, ankles and hips. The whole body, from head to toe, is treated, relaxed and rejuvenated. These exercises stimulate, balance and energise the Marma points and Chakras and optimise neuronal and hormone health of the physical body. External and internal body parts undergo deep transformation over a period of time. These scientific exercises not only make us stronger and more supple, but also help remove impurities from the body and improve the memory, concentration and will-power.

With age, in fact, after the age of 40 and sometimes even earlier, we start losing joint mobility and balance, as well as muscle and bone mass and stiffness sets in as the spine loses its mass and mobility. By age 45, we start paying for our sins. Neck and back problems, knee pain, hip joint problems, high blood pressure and tons of other problems start showing up by middle life. Aging is multifactorial and many other factors also play an important role. Consequently, almost all of those 45 and over have to learn to live with one or the other health issue.

Yoga is the best anti-aging potion that can be there! One can slow down ageing with yoga, or even reverse the ageing process with advanced yoga. Yogic exercises act by opening the postures and moving each joint through its full range of movement and counter the effects of gravity by lengthening the spine. Different elements of yoga need to be emphasised for different age-groups: the emphasis for the younger yogi is building and challenging the body, by midlife, the focus is on maintaining optimum health including injury prevention through yoga lifestyle (e.g. mindset, biomechanics, safe user-friendly routines, advanced breathing techniques (Pranayama), proper food choices, rest and relaxation). In yoga, the age of a person is determined by the age of the spine, and also by the length of the sciatic nerve. So, by working on these principles while avoiding the damage caused by intense exercises or wrong exercise routines, one can hope to stay healthy.

SAVY 50 + Yoga routines address some key issues:

  • People starting yoga around age 50 and later usually come to class with various health issues commonly associated with the ageing process, such as increasing stiffness, back and neck pain, kyphosis, problems with balance, arthritis, osteoporosis, knee and hip replacements, heart health and blood pressure issues. Slow paced classes with slow stretches and breathing exercises help people recover. We have seen miraculous health improvements happen in our classes.
  • Starting with simple lying down poses that are generally safe for everyone is the routine practice at SAVY. We introduce students to more challenging poses, such as leg stretches, hip openers and twists, in a graded manner. Slow and gentle allows the body to go deeper into the poses.
  • With so many like-minded, similarly aged people around, motivation level improves quickly. So, the challenge of convincing people that it’s something they need to do, is more than met.
  • It’s sometimes particularly hard for many older men and seasoned yogis to slow down, or not try to replicate what someone younger and more adept in the class is doing. The threshold for when to slow down is individual – it depends on when you started yoga and what shape you’re in. Some 70 years olds may be stronger or more flexible than an out-of-shape 25 years old. Still, we always caution to observe and be cautious about individual limits to avoid injury.
  • Use of props may encourage students to go a little further than their body permits. We have always discouraged the use of any props in our classes.
  • The focus is more on maintenance and improvement of function with practice. The purpose, key areas of focus and limitations in each pose are explained well to understand that.
  • Everybody gets individual attention at SAVY Studio, be it a larger or a smaller group. That helps avoid injury.
  • Everybody can benefit from yoga. Pranayama aids further in internal healing of the body, mind and spirit.
  • It’s important to keep the head below heart level for at least 10 minutes. So, we include inverted poses in routines which everyone can do.
  • We practice in a way that is appropriate, soothing and healing. We never force and always avoid poses that bear weight directly on the neck and head.
  • We advise modifications of challenging poses to make it easy for those who find it difficult to do them.
  • We focus on exercises which lengthen the spine.
  • We teach to move from hip joints instead of bending back and neck too much during bending poses.

Julia Chandler

Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month – Julia Chandler

My name is Julia Ann Chandler and I joined SAVY Yoga Studio on  January 17th 2014.

I was practising Hot Yoga at a very prominent Hot Yoga Studio here in London for approximately 3 weeks and, a little over 10 years ago, I practised traditional yoga in California as an added weekly exercise regimen.

Julia Chandler

I regret not keeping up with my Yoga routines from back then.

Julia Chandler

Although I try to do my best to stay in shape I never seemed to get as sculpted as I once was while practicing yoga.

Julia Chandler

When joining SAVY my hopes were to focus on relaxation and my struggles with anxiety.

Julia Chandler

My expectations have been met and beyond.

Julia Chandler

In only the two short weeks that I have been practising at SAVY International my stress and anxiety is much more under control through breathing exercises and guided yoga practices.

Julia Chandler

I have even practised some of the breathing techniques I have learned at the studio on my own with great success.

Julia Chandler

Already I can see an enormous amount of improvement not only with my stress levels but my strength and toning.

Julia Chandler

My experience at the SAVY Studio has been amazing.

Julia Chandler

With the warm and inviting atmosphere I have been giving my best efforts to do a class daily.

Julia Chandler

There is no pressure or competition during practice it is much more of a healing experience.

Julia Chandler

Dr. Jitender K Sahdev is a kind hearted man with a plethora of knowledge in many areas which is an added bonus in any Yoga instructor.

Julia Chandler

When I first contacted SAVY International to inquire about classes and prices, Dr. Sahdev kindly scheduled me in for an hour long ‘Meet and Greet’ where he showed me around the Studio, explained his credentials and practices, as well as answering any questions I may have had.

Julia Chandler

I have noticed my flexibility increasing daily.

Julia Chandler

I now feel more in control of my stress levels through deep breathing exercises.

Julia Chandler

After a yoga class my energy levels are through the roof and a sense of calmness stays with me throughout the day.

Julia Chandler

All these improvements I’ve noticed in just two short weeks.

Julia Chandler

I cannot wait to see how I’m feeling after two months or even two years.

Julia Chandler

As I get better at my practice, the better I’ll feel overall.

Julia Chandler

Strong body mind and soul!

 Julia Chandler

I highly recommend SAVY International to anyone seeking an authentic Yoga experience! You will be amazed just how beneficial it can be for you! Whether you’re adding yoga to your exercise routine or solely focusing on yoga, it is a win win! SAVY International is a ‘go at your own pace’ studio and when you leave you’ll be feeling great wanting to come back for more!

A note from the President’s desk

Dr Jitender K Sahdev

February, the shortest month of the year, is here. It’s a Black History Month studded with Groundhog Day on 2nd, World Marriage Day on 9th, the day of romantic love on Valentine’s Day on 14th, Family Day on 17th, International Mother Language Day on 21st. Winter chill still continues to be biting but severity will certainly decrease. Continue your efforts to stay fit, enjoy the winter sports and keep the warmth in your hearts alive through this last month of winters. SAVY Yoga helps you stay hale and hearty in such severe weather, as in any other weather, making you almost weather-proof.

In this now very popular Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month series, we present SAVY Yogis who have been learning the right kind of yoga with correct techniques, have done wonderfully well for themselves and are a guiding light and a source of great inspiration for others.

In this colourful month, quite warmly marked by Valentine’s Day, it’s my pleasure to introduce Julia Chandler, our new savvy SAVY Yogi  for the month of February. A curious and open person with a very inquisitive mind and blessed with a lithe and flexible yoga body, she joined SAVY Studio very recently, but we have already shared tons of information, surfacing after the barrage of questions she is ready to fire any time! Now that almost all of the 60 classes per week at the Studio have different routines and lots of classes are available at the Beginners’ and Intermediate level to all the yogis joining the Studio, she has had a chance to try many of the different yoga routines, and as is quite evident from her interest and enthusiasm, she seems to have enjoyed each single one of them, whether they were easy or challenging. She has done traditional yoga before and is enjoying her re-encounter with authentic traditional yoga at SAVY Studio. She has a very keen interest in yoga poses and is an avid learner of the newly discovered breathing exercises and what they can do for her, and works her way through the routines very dedicatedly. She is quick to learn, is bound to do great for herself and is certainly a source of enormous inspiration for others.

Keep it up, Julia!

– Jitender

SAVY Yoga for Weight Loss

Donna Hebert

New Year is here and along with it all the New Year Resolutions! In North America, 70% people have weight reduction on the list of their New Year Resolutions!

A controversy exists whether Yoga can help you achieve your desired weight loss goals? The answer is a definite YES! Combining yoga, a healthy attitude and yoga nutrition are all steps to get there with a savvy SAVY style.

There are myths that many people believe that exercising vigorously is the way to slim down and keep fit, which leaves them feeling exhausted just thinking about the arduous path to weight loss. There are unrealistic exercise routines that are out there which discourage and harm many. These irrational methods sometimes work but any exercise or dietary routine which cannot be incorporated in lifestyle in the long run, fails to achieve any permanent results. Unscientific weight loss programs and diet regimens lead to more muscle loss instead of fat loss and may lead to nutritional imbalances. So, most of even those who are able to shed some weight through a lot of effort are likely to get all that flab back with interest very fast, or land up with some nutritional or even hormonal imbalances.

Fat loss and weight reduction can be safely achieved through yoga. Beginning with an intention of exactly why you want to lose weight helps you set an awareness and direction towards your weight loss goals. Incorporating a healthy lifestyle with nutrient rich foods, plenty of sleep and yoga is the first step towards a valuable weight loss journey with permanent results.

SAVY Yoga has prepared a Weight Loss Routine that is simple, fun, light-hearted, and speeds up the body’s fat burning abilities through combining Vinyasa yoga and Pranayama, the breathing exercises, which lower stress hormone level and decrease the cortisol in the body.  This activates the body’s inherent sculpting capability to shape, tone, build muscle and balance energy so that a permanent weight loss can be achieved. Specific Yoga routines can also help you sculpt just one body part. In conjunction with Yoga Nutrition and other elements of Yoga under Dr Jitender K Sahdev‘s expert guidance, results are bound to happen!

Debbie

In SAVY Yoga for Weight Loss, the only weight you lift is your own. By completing the SAVY routine of stretches, breathing, and push and pull movements between your own muscle groups, yoga encourages fantastic benefits such as:

  • Reduces stress – reducing cortisol level and promoting better metabolism
  • Optimises hormones – through more balanced secretion of hormones at central and peripheral levels
  • Improves lymphatic circulation – helping you get rid of toxins in the body
  • Improves dietary habits – optimises diet through Yoga Nutrition advice, helping you  ward off toxins from nutrition
  • Creates more awareness – making you more aware and alive to your real potential
  • Raises heart rate – turning on cardio and fat burning abilities, and strengthening heart
  • Stretches muscles – helping you squeeze toxins out of muscles and body tissues.
  • Stimulates Marma points – helping you cleanse and balance your energy channels
  • Low impact exercise – Body and muscles are used fully in a low impact form that doesn’t stress the joints and ligaments
  • Increases brain volume, function, focus, coordination and balance
  • Promotes healthy lifestyle thus leading to more permanent results

A splendid mix and a great way to achieve overall positive health and a happier, more confident and slimmer you!

yoga for hypertension, heart disease, stroke

Yoga for Hypertension, Heart Disease, Stroke

yoga for hypertension, heart disease, stroke

Yoga, an ancient science of health, once viewed as only an exercise form in the west, has always been known for its efficacy in countering some of the dreaded diseases in the land of its origin-India. It is now slowly being accepted into Modern Medicine and in the west also for its health benefits. Because of the lack of the scientifically supervised research studies, the scientific community has exhibited only tongue in cheek response to its acceptance for treatment of diseases, but with more and more health centres around the globe devoting their attention to proper investigation of the health benefits of yoga, the acceptance level is slowly escalating, ranging from a silent low-keyed nod to awe-inspired, open-mouthed amazement at the success of it all. If you’re willing to dig a little deeper, you’ll discover that ancient yogic teachings on diet and lifestyle reflect a practical wisdom that modern medicine is gradually validating. From time to time, attempts at plagiarism have also been there, but that is beside the point and beyond the scope of this article.

Non-communicable diseases, chiefly cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases, are the major cause of adult mortality and morbidity worldwide. Most of the non-communicable diseases, for example diabetes or heart disease, affect the person in the productive years. It causes reduced productivity and early retirement.

Also, it puts immense pressure on the public health expenditure as in most cases the treatment costs are higher compared to the communicable diseases. Preventive strategies such as yoga must be propagated for better health. Its newfound popularity could be a boon for people with all kinds of diseases – major or minor. In expert hands, with addition of Yoga Nutrition, meditation, Marma therapy and other lesser known forms of Yoga Therapy, Yoga can be a very potent therapeutic tool. Patients of high blood pressure, heart failure, and other forms of cardiovascular disease can expect amazing responses. A small but promising body of research suggests that yoga’s combination of stretching, gentle activity, breathing, and mindfulness may have special benefits for people with cardiovascular disease. Neuro-degenerative disorders like Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s Disease, Ataxias, Parkinsonism, AML etc have been shown to respond to varying degrees, depending on the structure of the programs and the expertise available. Metabolic and endocrine disorders like obesity, diabetes mellitus etc., eye diseases, cancers, tumours, asthma and allergies, stress-related disorders, mood and sleep disorders and all other diseases are now known to respond to Yoga with varying degrees of success.

Yoga In Disease

The word “yoga” comes from a Sanskrit term that means ‘yuj’ or union. Its aim is to join body, mind, and spirit. Though there is just one Yoga, there are different minor or major forms of yoga, from the physically very gentle to very demanding types. Yoga’s path to balance the mind and the body involves mainly three interconnected threads: physical postures called “asanas,” controlled breathing, and calming the mind through relaxation and meditation. All three work together to attain a better optimised ‘milieu interiur’.

Getting into the various postures during a yoga session gently exercises the muscles. Anything that works your muscles is good for your heart and blood vessels. Activity also helps muscles become more sensitive to insulin, which is important for controlling blood sugar specifically, and body metabolism in general.

All Yoga Therapy programs at SAVY have Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program at its core, which revolves more around breathing exercises.

The time-tested deep-breathing exercises help slow the breathing rate. Taking fewer but deeper breaths each minute temporarily lowers blood pressure and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and calms the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for generating stress hormones. At a deeper level, breathing exercises have a much more profound effect and act by achieving hormonal balance and balance in the sympathetic and parasympathetic activities, and act by detoxifying the body. Attainment of positive and super-positive physical, mental and spiritual health is an altogether different level and dimension peculiar only to some advanced forms of yoga.

From therapeutic point of view, the postures and deep breathing offer a kind of physical meditation that focuses and clears the mind. Meditation and the mindfulness of yoga have both been shown to help people with all kinds of diseases though more work in the past has been focused on cardiovascular health.

Possible benefits

Heart disease kills far more people than any other illness, more than all forms of cancer combined. When former US President Bill Clinton mentioned in a CNN interview that he’d adopted a near-vegan diet for the sake of his heart’s health, the media went wild. Once known for his love of hamburgers and junk food, Clinton—who had bypass surgery in 2004 and an angioplasty in 2010 to remove blockages from a clogged artery—was not a likely candidate for dietary asceticism.

Yoga and Heart

But he was persuaded to make the radical change by an extensive review of the scientific evidence. And if you’re concerned about heart health, it’s food for thought that you, too, may want to consider.

The research into the connection between yoga and diseases is still in its scientific infancy. Several dozen studies have explored the possible benefits of yoga for people with diseases, but these trials are mostly small or lack the scientific stringency. Still, this body of work suggests that yoga may:

  1. reduce high blood pressure
  2. improve symptoms of heart failure
  3. ease palpitations
  4. enhance cardiac rehabilitation
  5. lower cardiovascular risk factors such as cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and stress hormones
  6. improve balance, reduce falls, ease arthritis, and improve breathing for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  7. down-regulation of disease-causing genes and up-regulation of disease preventing genes
  8. detoxify body
  9. attain greater hormonal balance,

and more.

Several randomized controlled trials under way should help pin down what yoga can do for people with different diseases.

Yoga can be a useful method for coping with cardiovascular disease. Even if all of the ongoing trials provide unequivocal support for yoga, it should be kept in mind that it won’t offer magical protection against heart disease. Nutrition and lifestyle still have to be watched.

Trying yoga

Beginning yoga can be a challenge. Traditional yoga is done by slowly stretching the body into a variety of poses while focusing on breathing and meditation. Attending a general yoga class populated by fit 30-somethings who expect a good workout may not be a very encouraging introduction. Some forms of yoga like hot yoga, power yoga etc, which have been shown in the past to be very physically demanding and having physical side-effects of their own, may not be advisable to patients at higher cardiovascular risk. It is always more prudent to attend yoga classes which offer fuller package of true yoga – yoga postures, breathing exercises, meditation, marma and more. SAVY Yoga classes are especially suitable from therapeutic point of view as they include all the major elements of yoga and have incomparable health benefits.

People with heart disease often have other health concerns, like arthritis, osteoporosis, vascular problems, vertigo etc, that limit their flexibility and movement. A good yoga instructor creates a safe environment for his or her students and helps them modify poses to meet their abilities and limitations.

Though yoga does not count towards physical activity requirements of 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity per week, it has its own therapeutic effects which are unparalleled and unsurpassed by any other exercise form.

American Heart Association Recommendations for Physical Activity

For overall health benefits to the heart, lungs and circulation, perform any moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic activity using the following guidelines:

  • Get the equivalent of at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity (2 hours and 30 minutes) each week.
  • You can incorporate your weekly physical activity with 30 minutes a day on at least five days a week.
  • Physical activity should be performed in episodes of at least 10 minutes, and preferably, it should be spread throughout the week.
  • Include flexibility and stretching exercises.
  • Include muscle strengthening activity at least two days each week.

Although conventional medicine often recommends heart-pounding aerobic workouts for cardiac health, there is evidence that less-intense exercise provides major benefits.

  • Don’t over-exercise; recent studies suggest that extreme exercise, like running 10 miles if that’s not your norm, may actually promote inflammation.
  • Get 20 to 30 minutes of slow to moderate walking daily.
  • Practice gentle asanas—such as Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Lord of the Fishes Pose); Salamba Sarvangasana (Supported Shoulderstand) with your feet on the wall; and Savasana (Corpse Pose)—easy pranayama exercises such as three-part breathing, and meditation. Even a few minutes per day can make a huge difference.
  • When you encounter a stressful situation, the brain releases adrenaline into your system to help you either fight or flee the threat. This causes your heart to beat faster and your blood pressure increases.  While this response can help you protect yourself when facing a threat, living in a constant state of stress may wreak havoc on your cardiovascular system. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, people who are prone to stress have a higher risk for heart disease than their calmer counterparts. What we want is a nervous system that reacts to stressful situations when they happen, but then shifts back to relaxation. Yoga may help by dampening your body’s reaction to stress. A 2012 article published in the journal ‘Medical Hypotheses’ suggests yoga could prevent and treat some medical conditions, including cardiac disease, by improving stress-related imbalances in the nervous system.

How yoga helps?

Yoga can help prevent cardiac episodes. Yoga also has proven benefits for those who have faced cardiac arrest, heart attack or other heart event. Combined with Yoga Nutrition, it can totally reverse heart disease, as has been demonstrated by the medical uses of raw vegan diet also. The calming benefits of yoga may also help, and you may see benefits right away. After your first yoga class, your blood pressure will likely be lower, you’ll be relaxed and you’ll feel better. Long-term, sustained yoga may play a role in improving overall health. After 2-3 months of yoga, you may see a dramatic increase in exercise functionality, and blood pressure and cholesterol levels may decrease.

As Dr Ornish explains, “Chronic emotional stress makes plaque build up twice as fast in the coronary arteries that feed the heart. Stress also causes the coronary arteries to constrict, reducing blood flow to the heart. It makes the platelets stickier and more likely to form blood clots that may precipitate a heart attack.” Yoga is perhaps the most effective stress-reduction method ever invented. If you want to keep your heart healthy, incorporate these tips into your practice:

  • Do a yogic relaxation for at least a few minutes every day. Research suggests it can increase your resiliency to stress—and, by extension, to heart disease.
  • Balance your emotions with a regular yoga practice. Studies suggest that yoga helps diffuse emotions such as anger, hostility, and impatience that are linked to heart attacks.
  • Combat loneliness, another risk factor for heart disease, by becoming part of a community. A recent study suggests that people with spiritual practices who meet regularly in a group live longer and have fewer heart attacks.
  • Offer service (karma yoga) to those less fortunate than yourself—whether that means volunteering in a food pantry, or teaching a free yoga class in a retirement community. According to the yoga tradition, there is no better way to open your heart.

What To Eat

Diet is clearly a cornerstone of the holistic approach to heart health. We encourage a low-fat, vegetarian diet, especially according to your body type. In general, we recommend the following:

  • A wide variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes
  • Natural, unrefined soy foods
  • No more than one cup per day of non-fat dairy products (like skim milk)

Knowing what to eat, how to exercise,  and understanding why yoga is effective can help you avoid heart disease and enjoy life. It is highly recommend that you should go to a qualified and trained yoga instructor.

Dr Jitender K Sahdev’s almost three decades of first class extensive experience in the field of Medicine, Surgery, Yoga, Yoga Therapy and other alternative modalities in India is a huge boon to the field of Yoga Therapy.

Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month – Donna Hebert

My name is Donna Hebert and I joined SAVY around August-September 2012.

 Donna Hebert

My background in Yoga was very limited – I did a little bit in my late teens and had one 8 week course in Yoga in my early 20s.

 Donna Hebert

Unfortunately I had not kept up with Yoga as I “aged”.  My daughter asked me last year if I would be interested in “trying Yoga” and much to her surprise I agreed and hence attended my first SAVY Yoga class in 2012.

 Donna Hebert

Much to my disappointment I could not even sit on the floor with my legs under me!  My strength and flexibility had disappeared over the years and arthritis was setting in. This was not good!  Would I stay with it??

 Donna Hebert

I decided perhaps through perseverance I may be able to make improvements in my flexibility.  So while I started off huffing, puffing and complaining I gave it a whirl!

 Donna Hebert

By the time January and February 2013 arrived (only a few months after I started) I took a break. I had noticed improvements in how I felt and  thought I was fine to do this.   (I am not much for going out in winter especially at the end of a work day – that is why I missed classes!).

 Donna Hebert

When Spring arrived ( a couple of months later) I returned to Yoga.  I realized it had not been a smart move to miss those couple of months of classes.  Arthritis had meantime reared its ugly head even further!  Since April, I started to attend classes more regularly and while I would like to attend more frequently, ( other commitments)  I can say that improvements have been made.

 Donna Hebert

I am back to being able to sit on the floor with my legs under me and can now hold a number of the poses for more than 10 seconds! I feel better and have noticed a great improvement in my strength in the upper part of my body!  Overall I feel physically better.

 Donna Hebert

It has also made me realize that no matter what is going on in one’s life, if we don’t take care of ourselves we will not be any good for anyone else.

 Donna Hebert

I strongly encourage those people not involved in any form of activity to try Yoga – you work at your own pace – and your movements and flexibility will improve.

 Donna Hebert

I know I for one will continue to stay with Yoga as ending up in a wheel chair is not someplace I want to be! Having been a working parent and raising children I also strongly emphasize to many young people to not neglect themselves – make time and give Yoga training a try.

 Donna Hebert

SAVY is a comfortable and safe place to receive your training and Jit is a Dr trained in India.  Although he does not yet practice medicine in Canada he certainly understands ailments and disease quite deeply.

 Donna Hebert

As a result any pose can be tailored to accommodate the student and as the student gains more flexibility, the pose will be improved.

 Donna Hebert

No one need feel intimidated!

 Donna Hebert

In summary, I highly recommend you give SAVY a try!! Procrastination does not exercise the body!

A note from the President’s desk

Dr Jitender K Sahdev

A Merry Christmas to you all in advance!

December, the first month of meteorological winter and the month of festivities, is here. December is the month with the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Winters can be pretty severe and harsh in Canada, so, all the more reason to awaken to the needs of our body and intellect. Stay fit, enjoy the winter sports and keep the warmth in your hearts alive through the winters. Yoga, more than any other modality, helps you stay hale and hearty in such severe weather.

In this now very popular Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month series, we present SAVY Yogis who have been learning the right kind of yoga with correct techniques, have done wonderfully well for themselves and are a guiding light and a source of great inspiration for others.

In this month marked by coldness, it’s heart-warming to introduce Donna Hebert, our next savvy SAVY Yogi. A yoga student with a child-like curiosity and with a huge potential, she is one of the ‘bendier‘ people at SAVY. She loves to try newer poses, especially if they are more twisting and challenging, and one has to be quite inventive to be able to keep up with per pace of learning and pick up. Waxing and waning in her bending capabilities in proportion to her periods of absence because of her commitments, she is always able to pick up from where she left, and go still a step further in her attempts. A very positive person, she is a source of constant inspiration to those awe-inspired others around her in the classes. She has done really well not only for herself, but has been constantly inspiring others too to do better and better.

Thanks and Keep it up, Donna!

Universe

Origin of World – The Creation Story

Creation Story

Where did we come from? Where did this universe come from? Why is our Universe the way we see it to be? And what will ultimately become of it? These are the fundamental questions which have long been intriguing mankind even from the pre-historic era. The journey towards understanding the creation has been long. Since the 1929 discovery that Universe is expanding, man has made some significant steps in understanding how the Universe began and how it must have evolved to be what it is today. We know this: galaxies and clusters of galaxies formed from tiny fluctuations in the early Universe. We can measure these fluctuations by mapping the cosmic background radiation and relate them to the structures which we observe today.

The picture of universe we see today is more complete and much richer. The cosmos is said to have begun 13.7 billion years ago with the big bang. A fraction of a second after the beginning, the universe was a hot, formless soup of the most elementary particles, quarks and leptons. As it expanded and cooled, layer on layer of structure developed: neutrons and protons, atomic nuclei, atoms, stars, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, and finally super-clusters. The universe has so far been discovered to host 100 billion galaxies, each containing 100 billion stars and probably a similar number of planets. Galaxies themselves are held together by the gravity of the mysterious dark matter. The universe continues to expand and indeed does so at an accelerating pace, driven by dark energy, an even more mysterious form of energy whose gravitational force repels rather than attracts.

All this is amazing, intriguing and mind-boggling! However, we are now discovering that the concepts about origin of universe given in the old Sanskrit text Rig Veda also seem to stand the scrutiny of scientific minds. The parallels between Rig Veda Creation Story and what is being theorized by modern day physicists and confirmed by modern science are astoundingly and astonishingly similar. How and what could have led to the discovery of these scientific facts by the sages who did not even have any sophisticated instruments at their disposal except their well-developed consciousness? We need to have an honest peep into what they said and understand their way of working to get an idea of the greatness of their work and put things in the right perspective.

Rig Veda Creation Story does not talk about any external creation or creator. The universe is a result of manifestation of Para-brahman, the supreme consciousness. Hence, there is nothing externally created.

Rig Veda Creation Story professes there are times when the universe takes form and times when it dissolves back into nothingness. The in-between times are known as the days and nights of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation.

It is interesting to note that Rig Veda in its 10th Mandala explains beautifully the concept in a Suktha called Nasadiya Suktha.

Rig Veda 10:129 – Nasadiya Suktha

Neither existence nor nonexistence was there. Neither matter nor space around. What covered it, where it was and who protected? Why, that plasma, all pervading, deep and profound?

Neither death nor immortality was there. And there was neither day nor night But for that breathless one breathing on its own. There was nothing else, surely nothing.

It was darkness concealed in darkness. And an uninterrupted continuum of fluid. Out came in material form and shape. That one lying deep inside, on its own intent.

In the cosmic mind, all pervading. Desire, the primal seed made its first appearance. And the wise men, seeking deep in their heart; could see the link between ‘that is’ and ‘that is not’.

Reins of the link, a grid of crisscross lines, Holds all the seeds and mighty forces, Microcosmic forces within And macro forces out above.

Who really knows, who can declare. When it started or where from? And where will the creation end? Seekers and sought entered later – And so who knows when all this manifested?

That one, out of which the creation came, May hold the reins or not, Perceiving all from above, That one alone Knows the beginning – may not know too.

Before time began there was no heaven, no earth and no space between. A vast dark ocean washed upon the shores of nothingness and licked the edges of night. A giant cobra, Sheshanaga, floated on the waters. Asleep within its endless coils lay the Lord Vishnu. He was watched over by the mighty serpent. Everything was so peaceful and silent that Vishnu slept undisturbed by dreams or motion.

From the depths a humming sound began to tremble, Om. It grew and spread, filling the emptiness and throbbing with energy. The night had ended. Vishnu awoke. As the dawn began to break, from Vishnu’s navel grew a magnificent lotus flower. In the middle of the blossom sat Vishnu’s servant, Brahma. He awaited the Lord’s command.

Vishnu spoke to his servant: ‘It is time to begin.’ Brahma bowed. Vishnu commanded: ‘Create the world.’

A wind swept up the waters. Vishnu and the serpent vanished. Brahma remained in the lotus flower, floating and tossing on the sea. He lifted up his arms and calmed the wind and the ocean. Then Brahma split the lotus flower into three. He stretched one part into the heavens. He made another part into the earth. With the third part of the flower he created the skies.

The earth was bare. Brahma set to work. He created grass, flowers, trees and plants of all kinds. To these he gave feeling. Next he created the animals and the insects to live on the land. He made birds to fly in the air and many fish to swim in the sea. To all these creatures, he gave the senses of touch and smell. He gave them power to see, hear and move.

The world was soon bristling with life and the air was filled with the sounds of Brahma’s creation.

However, a wicked demon appeared and stole the world. He threw it far out into the cosmic ocean.

Vishnu quickly killed the demon and changed into animal form to rescue the world. Brahma was delighted at the world’s safe return from the depths, for he was then able to finish his task of forming the land and all living things.

But one day, this Universe, like all others before it, will be wiped out when Lord Shiva, the destroyer, grows angry with the world’s evil. At this time, he will dance Tandava – his ferocious dance of destruction and once again there will be a time when nothing exists but Brahman.

Now, let us compare all this idea in Rig Veda Creation Story with the current Cosmological findings.

Beginning of Time

Cosmology: There is no physics. Theory cannot account for conditions existing or not existing

Rig Veda: Neither existence nor nonexistence was there; Neither matter nor space was there;(1st two lines of 1st Verse)

10-32 seconds after Big Bang

Cosmology: The inflationary mode ends, having made the universe smooth and almost homogenous. Matter, anti-matter, and radiation are a bubbling opaque stew.

Rig Veda: And an uninterrupted continuum of fluid……(2nd line of 3rd Verse)

10-4 seconds after big bang

Cosmology: Universe expands. Matter and anti-matter annihilate each other. There is slightly more matter and this excess comprises the matter in the universe today forming galaxies.

Rig Veda: ….. Out came in material form and shape That One lying deep inside, on its own intent(Last 2 lines of 3rdVerse)

In the sixth verse, it says – who will know and who can declare when and where from it all started since we, the seekers were not there and also the causative forces were not present. They came later.

Even gravity broke away from the presumed unified force later. Veda makes it clear that so long you are in search of the causative forces only, you will not get the answer.

Oscillating Cosmos

There is a theory in the scientific world envisaging a cosmos that oscillates forever passing through infinite number of moments of creation in a never-ending cycle of birth, death and repetition. This has the advantage of being able to answer the question – What preceded the explosion?

Veda also says that this creation and its ending is a repetitive cycle.

End in darkness

Modern cosmology, on the basis of available evidence, envisages the end will come in darkness. Beginning follows the end.

Veda describes the beginning in the same way – darkness concealed in darkness was the state of things.

Herbert Reeves, the famous astrophysicist, after discussing about the primordial force of Big Bang and subsequent distinct forces like gravity, asks a relevant question: “Did not the universe, somewhere, aim at achieving self-awareness through the creation of human mind?” (His article in Figaro-Magazine of February 1983)

The answer is available in Rig Veda for all thinkers of all ages. The answer does not limit human beings only, but extends to all animate and inanimate worlds. The last verse is more profound in its meaning. That One, the “author” of all events should know the beginning. Veda says, “That One also may not know! That breathless One is breathing on its own. The beginning of universe, its expansion, demise and re-emergence – entire process is like involuntary inhaling and exhaling. If someone puts a question to any other one, when did you start that particular inhalation, the obvious answer will be – I do not know.

Even the “author” may not know…

It is a continuous process of which I hardly take notice of. The process is a continuum. Beginning and end are relevant to us, parts and parcels of universe. We float and sink in the ocean of time but not that continuous flow of events or its “author”.

So, according to Vedic Philosophy, the universe (or Multiverse) had no origin, but always has been and always will be, but is perpetually in flux. Space and time are of cyclical nature. This universe is simply the current one, which is in flux and constantly changing, when it finally ceases to manifest, a new one will arise. In a number of stories from the Puranas the continual creation and destruction of the universe is equated to the outwards and inwards breaths of the gigantic cosmic Maha Vishnu.

Hindu scriptures hold that Lord Vishnu, the protector and caretaker of all creation, sleeps in the middle of a vast ocean on the giant snake Sheshanaga. When the cycle begins, Lord Brahma is born out of the ‘Anda‘, an allusion to the egg which is the origin of all life. This ‘Anda’ comes from the navel of Lord Vishnu. The first sound of Lord Brahma is Om, the origin of all creation.

At first the ultimate truth “Brahman” was there, from whom came out Shiva without any birth or death. Vishnu is formed from the vaam-anga of Shiva or the left body. Shiva is the extreme male power of the universe. He is the destroyer or annihilator of the universe.

From him manifested the extreme female power of the universe, Sati.

Then the preserver of the universe Vishnu took three forms, Karnodakasayi Vishnu or Maha-VishnuGarbhodakasayivishnu, and Ksirodaksayi vishnu. Maha Vishnu has several Garbhodakasayivishnus in the spiritual sky (the ocean of Karana). Each Garbhodakasayivishnu exhales and inhales and with each breath a Brahma is born who lives for 100 Brahma years and dies with the breath of Garbhodakasayi Vishnu. Each Brahma creates a universe which comes to an end with partial annihilation.

After several Brahma years the annihilation of Garbhodakasayi Vishnu takes place and at the last stage, the dissolution of the whole Karan Sagar with Maha Vishnu by Shiva with Tandav; and this cycle begins again. This cycle of formation and annihilation is seen in Hinduism.

The puranic view asserts that the universe is created, destroyed, and re-created in an eternally repetitive series of cycles. In Hindu cosmology, a universe endures for about 4,320,000,000 years (a kalpa or one day of Brahma the creator) and is then destroyed by fire or water elements. At this point, Brahma rests for one night, just as long as the day. This process, named pralaya (Cataclysm), repeats for 100 Brahma years (311 Trillion, 40 Billion human years), which represents Brahma’s lifespan. Similarly at any given time there are an infinite number of Brahmas creating each of these universes, which are infinite in number.

Brahma is the creator but not necessarily regarded as God in Hinduism. He is mostly regarded as a creation of God or Brahman.

This ‘oscillation’ is portrayed in Hindu texts, especially in the Bhagwad Gita, as Shrishti followed by Vinaash. The period of Vinaash is one of extreme chaos where the very laws of Nature fail.

big bang

Rig Veda viewpoint of modern cosmology

This is similar to the Cyclical Universe Theory in physical cosmology. The Big Bang is described as the birth of the universe (Brahma), the life of the universe then follows (Vishnu), and the Big Crunch would be described as the destruction of the universe (Shiva).

An interesting parallel to these ideas can be found in the ekpyrotic model of the universe.

Some Hindu scholars draw metaphorical parallels between modern cosmology and the Hindu theory of ‘Srishti’. According to them, the ‘Anda’ itself resembles the hypothetical energy point from which the Big Bang and hence the Universe emerged. They also claim that the true intonation of Om is very long and drawn out, it is described as an all pervading sound. Its parallel is the cosmic background radiation, currently at a temperature level of 2.725 Kelvin, which pervades the Universe.

Some Hindus claim that even the string theory finds a place in their ancient texts. The first thing that ever was and will be is ‘Shabda’ or sound. This energy is produced by vibrations in energy produced by the powers of the Trinity (Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva). Although at a very high level, this resembles the multidimensional vibrations of the ‘Gunas’ or strings, which are said to be the basis of all creation.

The Rig Veda viewpoint of the continuous cycle of creation, destruction and rebirth is attuned to the theory of Big Bang – Expansion – Contraction – Big Crunch. If the Big Crunch happens, the movement of galaxies towards each other will produce very strong gravitational fields which may make relativistic effects perceptible at a great magnitude. The physical phenomena which we are used to may change wildly or be non-existent.

Eugene Wong Won

Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month – Eugene Wong Won

My name is Eugene Wong Won.
I joined SAVY International back in June 2013.
Before joining SAVY, I was having a lot of lower back pains and my flexibility especially in my legs was not very responsive.
My doctor prescribed pain killers.

I am not a spring chicken, but that was not acceptable. I decided to do something about the problem.
My wife who was then doing yoga at SAVY encouraged me to join the yoga classes. And this is how it started.

Over the past five months, I have been going to yoga classes on the average four days per week enduring the exercises and deep stretches for one hour a day under the professional guidance of Dr. Jitender Sahdev.
Today, five months later, I am happy to say my flexibility and mobility have improved, my back pains are hardly noticeable and I no longer take the prescribed pain pills.
Your body, like a car, always need ongoing maintenance. Yoga is part of that ongoing maintenance for your body.
Definitely, for me, yoga with Dr. Jit has been a positive experience.

A note from the President’s desk

Dr Jitender K Sahdev

November, the month of the Remembrance Day, is here. November used to be the ninth month in Roman calendar, hence its name from novem means nine; but it became the eleventh month later when January and February were added. Month long observances are held for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, COPD Awareness month, National Novel Writing Month, National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo), Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, American Diabetes Month, Lung Cancer Awareness Month, National Homeless Youth Awareness Month, Crohn’s & Ulcerative Colitis Awareness Month, National Pomegranate Month in the United States, International Drum Month, National Stomach Cancer Awareness Month (United States), Epilepsy Awareness Month, No Shave November, Movember and many more events.

November starts on the same day of the week as February in common years and March every year. November ends on the same day of the week as August every year. November starts on the same day of the week as June of the previous year in common years and September and December of the previous year in leap years.

In this now very popular Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month series, we present SAVY Yogis who have been learning the right kind of yoga with correct techniques, have done wonderfully well for themselves and are a guiding light and a source of great inspiration for others.

In such an important month, it’s a matter of great pride for me to introduce a man of wonderful calibre as our next savvy SAVY Yogi – Eugene. He is a man with a golden heart! A note from the President’s desk

Dr Jitender K Sahdev

October, the month of the Halloween, is here. We’ll also be celebrating International Day of Non-Violence and International World Teachers’ Day. In Canada, it is celebrated as Brain Tumor Awareness month too, and we at SAVY will be launching a program for brain tumor care this month. It marks the start of the season of autumn. It’s a very interesting month in the way that in non-leap years, January starts on the same day of the week as October, but no other month starts on the same day of the week as October in leap years. October ends on the same day of the week as February every year and January in non-leap years only. There is much more to this month, but I’ll leave that to you to explore. 😀
In this now very popular Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month series, we present SAVY Yogis who have been learning the right kind of yoga with correct techniques, have done wonderfully well for themselves and are a guiding light and a source of great inspiration for others.
With great pride and pleasure, I introduce another savvy SAVY Yogi – Debbie, this month. Debbie is a real Yogi at heart, as she believes in living in the moment and gives her best to the moment. A very loving and caring person herself, exuding positivity, she has a great attitude and a wonderful aptitude and is a joy to teach and has always been a source of great support and inspiration and a pillar of strength. Her regularly irregular presence in yoga classes, along with Mama Jane’s, 😀  is loaded with fun, focus and dedication. She doesn’t take long in picking up the instruction and her devotion and steadfastness is commendable. Her grit and determination for results is something I would love to ape ASAP.
Keep it up, Debbie!

Eric and Pauline Donald

FEATURED SAVY YOGI OF THE MONTH

My name is Pauline Donald and I started yoga with SAVY two years ago and attended 30 lessons.
Pauline Donald
After a few months break, I returned in January of this year.

I tried yoga years ago and really enjoyed it but that session was discontinued.  I tried yoga at several other places which eventually led me to SAVY.

Pauline Donald

I was looking for a program that would give me enjoyment, a challenge, and relaxation.
Pauline Donald
This yoga has gone beyond my expectations!  I have found enjoyment, on-going challenge, and relaxation during all sessions.
Pauline Donald
My favourites are the sun and moon salutation, breathing exercises and the Deep Stretch sessions on Fridays.  It is not easy but very satisfying for mind and body.
I have noticed improvement in stamina, strength especially in my arms, flexibility, concentration, and ability to relax.
Pauline Donald
I like SAVY because of the variety of movements and poses, the individual feedback to execute poses correctly, the challenge, and the warm, supportive encouragement.

I encourage anyone who is seeking to improve their body strength and flexibility and overall health benefits to join SAVY and discover for yourself.

A note from the President’s desk
Dr Jitender K Sahdev
September marks a feeling of a fresh start, turning over of a new leaf, and initiation of nesting. We continue our march into the third year with overwhelming response from savvy Londoners for their favorite Yoga Studio.
In this new series, we present SAVY Yogis who have been learning the right kind of yoga with correct techniques, have done wonderfully well for themselves and are a guiding light and a source of great inspiration for others.
With great pride and pleasure, I introduce another savvy SAVY YogiPauline Donald this month. Her zeal, zest and devotion to yoga is infectious, and the magic of her benign presence in SAVY Yoga classes is nothing less than awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, shoulder-slouching, mesmerizing and thoroughly ego-smothering experience for the rest of us. During yoga sessions, as she executes her yoga poses with complete focus, very often I catch somebody or the other looking her way with an amazed look, followed by a deep sigh, a head shake, and a semblance of an unsure resigned smile of meek submission. Her vigor and enthusiasm for greater perfection is amply bolstered by her skillful yet unattached, devoted regular practice, and her lively boy-friend, and husband, Eric. She, with her ever-present friend Mary, has come a long way in these last two years, and the ruthless, unrelenting dedication shows not even an iota of respite.
Pauline, you are amazing. Keep it up!

FEATURED SAVY YOGI OF THE MONTH

Noel Paterson

I am Noel Paterson and I joined SAVY Studio in summer of 2011.
Noel Paterson
I did several sessions at other studios in London for 2 years before that.
I was excited to find SAVY–I expected more than other studios because SAVY had a full-fledged yoga master. My expectations were more than met!
Noel Paterson
I have found the sessions to be excellent for me.
Noel Paterson
I also like the many associations I’ve made with  other yoga enthusiasts at the studio.
My overall physical and mental health has improved.
Noel Paterson
I like SAVY because the whole program is geared to personal well-being — Jitender knows the right programs for each individual and a thorough screening is done to evaluate each person’s needs before beginning a program. To boot, Jitender is a medical doctor and knows what programs are suited to each individual. He amply stresses the importance of breathing techniques.
The prices are excellent–geared to everyone’s income. One could not ask for a better variety of programs suited for young and old.
This studio offers considerably more than any of the other studios that I’m familiar with.
I’m so thankful that I discovered SAVY International.
They have a terrific website too. Come and experience for yourself.

A note from the President’s desk
It’s 8th August and we celebrate 2nd Anniversary of the SAVY Studio today. It’s a matter of great pleasure and honour to mark the beginning of the third year with this new series of FEATURED SAVY YOGI OF THE MONTH on this auspicious day.
We’ll be presenting SAVY Yogis in this series who have been learning the right kind of yoga with right techniques, have done really well for themselves and are a guiding light and a source of great inspiration for others.
It’s heartening and a matter of great pride to present Noel Paterson as SAVY Yogi this month. His enthusiasm, understanding and  perseverance is exemplary and a source of great inspiration to everyone at SAVY Studio, including me. Over the last two years, he has been very regular and his dedication has had obvious results, as is quite evident from the photographs.
Keep it up, Noel! We love you.
