South London SAVY Yoga – Sukshma Yoga or Subtle Yoga

SAVY Yoga has been serving the city of London and surrounding areas since 2011 under the most qualified and experienced faculty in LONDON and CANADA, and one of the most qualified and experienced faculty in the WORLD! To serve the people of London in a better way, instead of serving some run-of-the-mill pseudo-yoga routines, we offer some very useful and healing, authentic Yoga/ Pranayama routines, ranging from gentle to very challenging Yoga, for the  beginner to the advanced student alike.

Here, we bring to you an introduction to Yoga classes being taught at our South London SAVY Yoga Studio.

Through demonstration, discussion and experiential movement, you will gain key understanding of proper postures and how to keep your body safe. As common sense dictates, one can function properly only if one is disease-free and is in a healthy state of body, mind and spirit. So, for us, your health and disease-free state comes first of all. Asanas, Pranayama, Mudras, Marmas, Kriyas, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana – our Yoga is much more than mere gymnastics and sauna!

South London Yoga Classes at SAVY bring to you the taste, values and expertise of the true traditional Ashtanga and Vinyasa Yoga from India. Inspired adherence to the eight pillars or steps of yoga bestow one with a calm mind and fit body and lead one towards attaining an emancipated life. In more physical or materialistic  terms, Yoga is more than capable of keeping one physically and mentally fit and disease-free. It has become the new hot and favoured way to sweat it out for better health. SAVY Yoga is a humble step in that direction.

Sukshma Yoga or Subtle Yoga

 Jinfeng Wang

Sukshma Yoga -The Yoga for Everyone, or Subtle Yoga, or Micro Yoga, is one of the most ancient and relatively little known form of Yoga. This is ‘The Yoga for Everyone’! These exercises are simple, short and subtle. They open up subtle energy channels and you can feel a palpable difference even in a very short while.

Sukshma Yoga can help you relax within a few minutes. Its effect penetrates subtle levels at the physical, mental and spiritual levels. This consists of gentle stretching and coordinated breathing, and breathing exercises, that result in deep relaxation. It includes easy exercises for the eyes, tongue and jaws, neck, hands, feet, knees, ankles and hips. In Sukshma Yoga the whole body, from head to toe, is treated, relaxed and rejuvenated. These exercises also stimulate, balance and energise the Marma points and Chakras. External and internal body parts undergo deep transformation in this type of Yoga. These are scientific exercises that not only make us strong and supple, but also help remove impurities from the body and improve the memory, concentration and will-power. Sukshma Yoga routine includes more of those physical yogic movements which almost all of the people would be able to do. Hasta mudras or hand postures are also included.

These classes are suitable even for those who have not done any form of yoga or exercise before and are afraid of trying yogic postures. The good thing about yoga is that there is something for everybody regardless of body weight, physical limitations/strength or flexibility. With the regular practice of these gentle movements you would be amazed to see how the yoga practice is helping you not only in making a difference in your lives but also helping in overcoming so many health issues. Regular practice of this type of Yoga ensures a long and healthy life. People of every age, make, fitness level, belief, faith can do and receive the benefits of these exercises that can be very comfortably and safely practised. These exercises also make you ready for getting deeper into yoga and meditation in a very gentle way.

Our Beginners’ Level I classes are based on Sukshma Yoga or Subtle Yoga. You can learn Sukshma Yoga at SAVY under one of the most qualified and experienced faculty in North America!

Sanskrit Names for Asanas

SANSKRIT WORD ROOTS OF ASANA NAMES

MAKING THEM EASIER TO UNDERSTAND

Sanskrit Names for Asanas

If you are not sure what to do when the teacher calls for “Utkatasana”, or, can’t quite tell “Hasta padangusthasana” apart from “Chaturanga Dandasana”, or,  not clearly visualising “Prasarita Padottanasana”, or can’t get your mouth around “Utthitta Chaturanga Dandasaana”, here is some help!

What is in a Name!

Two basic things make identification of asanas (poses) easier:

String of Pearls

First, you must know that those long Sanskrit words are in fact like strings of pearls. This is something peculiar to Sanskrit. For example, Paschimottanasana has 4 words in it:

  • Paschima (West or backside of the body);
  • Utt (intense)
  • tana (stretch);
  • Asana (pose).

Learning to identify the smaller words within the long name makes it easier not only to recognize but also helps to pronounce.

Common Mother Language

The second important point is that, in English (as well as other languages), we use words that are distant cousins to Sanskrit.

According to linguists, there are nineteen families of languages in the world, and the languages of the western world have developed from one original tongue. No written record exists of this mother tongue, but strong similarities between words in different western languages, called Indo-European languages, point to a common origin. With the demise of Aryan Invasion Theory (AIT), newer theories have come up, but here is an indicative chart according to accepted theories at present:

Sanskrit_Language Tree

Many opinions are afloat even about the age of the Sanskrit. The oldest form of Sanskrit is Rigvedic (or Vedic)Sanskrit; so, some estimates can be made about the age of Sanskrit from the age of Vedas. Various postulates in vogue are:

  • The modern linguists place the age of the first book of Vedas, the Rig Veda, at about 1800 B.C., placing Sanskrit at 3,800 years of age.
  • Astronomical references in the Vedas, however, provide some broad approximations that help date the beginning of the tradition. Some Vedic notices mark the beginning of the year at the vernal equinox in Orion; this was the case around 4500 B.C. This places Sanskrit at 6,500 years of age.
  • Atreya, a descendant of Hindu sage Atri, was a well-known Ayurvedic expert from 6th century BCE.  Having lived in India for many years, he stated in Practical Atreya, “Ayurveda has very old roots, long before recorded history. Hinduism is a much later manifestation of the Vedic culture. Theoral tradition states that the first of the Vedas was composed about 40,000 years ago. This comes from my personal (Atreya’s) dialogs with yogis and teachers in India.  The oral traditions are still very much alive in India, when valuable information is passed orally from teacher to student”. This account implies that Ayurveda, and Sanskrit, have existed for approximately 42,000 years.
  • Some Indian Vedic scholars believe that creation, and so, Sanskrit – the divine language, is more than 2 billion years old.

Even according to first postulate, the oldest languages of the Indo-European family are Sanskrit (1800 B.C.), Greek (800 B.C.) and Latin (500 B.C.) French is a direct descendant of Latin, and about half of English words come from French. The Anglo-Saxon side of English, related to German, is also part of the big Indo-European family. According to Indian scriptures, Vedic language, which is the mother of Sanskrit, is said to be the mother of all languages.

One day in yoga class, this very obvious link was pointed out to me. I was explaining to the students that the asana they were doing was Janushirasana, and further expanded that janu meant knee and shir meant head. One student pointed out immediately that in French, the word for knee is genou, and is similarly pronounced like janu. There are so many other similar sounding words in languages : mother is ‘matri’ in Sanskrit, brother is ‘bhrata’, mrta is Sanskrit for dead or corpse and, in French, mort means death or dead and then goes on into English to show up again in mortuary (a place for the dead). This is a long list….

The Names of Asanas

Sanskrit Alphabets

Since the late 19th century, Sanskrit has been written mostly with the Devanagari alphabets. However it has also been written with all the other alphabets of India, except Gurmukhi and Tamil, and with other alphabets such as Thai and Tibetan. The Grantha, Sharda and Siddham alphabets are used only for Sanskrit. Since the late 18th century, Sanskrit has also been written with the Latin alphabet. The most commonly used system is the International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST), which was been the standard for academic work since 1912.

There are about a thousand conjunct consonants, most of which combine two or three consonants. There are also some with four-consonant conjuncts and at least one well-known conjunct with five consonants. Here are some of the commonly-used conjuncts:

Bhangra Dance

Bhangra Dance in London ON

A FUN AND ENJOYABLE WAY TO EXERCISE!

Dance your way to fitness

Next Bhangra Dance workshop in London

in February

Bhangra refers to Punjabi-style dancing!

Bhangra dance is based on music from a dhol, folk singing, and chimta.Bhangra is a highly energetic dance. Dancing fiercely and with great pride, dancers typically add nonsensical, random noises to their dancing.
Bhangra dance has expanded into the world of fitness and is accepted as a form of intense exercise. It is an excellent form of exercise as well as entertainment.

Bhangra has been first known to offspring to North America about 100 years ago with the first generation of Punjabi Americans that immigrated to California. Bhangra competitions have been active in the United States and Canada for over 25 years. North America has a great history of elite bhangra competitions and bhangra teams.

In the West, unlike in the Punjab, there is less emphasis on traditional songs and more focus on the flow of a mix; many teams mix traditional bhangra music with hip-hop or rock songs.

Dr Jitender K Sahdev has bagged many prizes in Bhangra competitions. He will be leading Bhangra classes here in London ON.

diabetes

Beat the Beast

SAVY International Inc./ SAVY Yoga Studio has started a novel series Beat the Beast – a series of 10-day workshops, each one targeted at different major diseases as well as positive health. Under this series, we offer workshops on some very useful Yoga routines including yoga postures, breathing exercises, marma therapy, nada yoga, shithilakaran, meditation techniques, mudras, kriyas, and a lot more – all that which is specifically effective for the said  health issue and has a proven role in the care of that particular state. Participants will be required to attend 90-minute classes for the specified 10 days.

Yoga for Diabetes Mellitus

Claiming Your Health Back from Diabetes

Beat the Beast series, based on Yoga, Pranayama, Nada, Marmas, Meditation and more, offers immense healing potential for the body, mind and spirit.

Diabetes is a long-term condition that causes high blood sugar levels. In 2013 it was estimated that over 382 million people throughout the world had diabetes. In Type 1 Diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1. In Type 2 Diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin for proper function. Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type. Gestational Diabetes, this type affects females during pregnancy. The most common diabetes symptoms include : Polyuria – frequent urination, Polydipsia – intense thirst, and Polyphagia – intense hunger. Weight gain, unusual weight loss, fatigue, cuts and bruises that do not heal, male sexual dysfunction, numbness and tingling in hands and feet are also commonly reported symptoms. In Type 1 Diabetes, if you follow a healthy eating plan, do adequate exercise, and take insulin, you can lead a normal life. In Type 2, patients need to eat healthily, be physically active, and test their blood glucose. They may also need to take oral medication, and/or insulin to control blood glucose levels.   Yoga is not just physical stretching, but it is a whole science of life! Yoga and Ayurveda offer many ways of helping in diseases. SAVY offers programs based on Yoga, Marma, Kriyas, Mudras, effective breathing techniques and other healing elements of Yoga. Validated by the stringent test of time and the millions who tried them in the past, and backed and refined by Dr Sahdev’s almost three decades of superlative clinical experience at the fore-front of main-stream Medicine, inspired by his work in Surgical Oncology, Neurosurgery and other Super Specialities at premier medical institutes in India, his study and work in other Alternative modalities and Yoga, and an input of thousands of hours of educated and qualified clinical research and its deep analysis in India, these breathing and other techniques have been proved to actually deliver! Right from the day of  SAVY‘s inception, we’ve put benefits of all the advanced and superlative skills and knowledge on offer for the benefit of humanity under our Yoga Therapy programs, specifically including Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program. In a study done on effect of yoga in Diabetes-2 cases, yoga resulted in significant reduction in BMI, glycemic control, and malondialdehyde and increase in glutathione and vitamin C and helps in reducing oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes. Yoga in addition to standard care helps reduce BMI and improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients.

We offer very well-structured, effective, advanced and result-oriented programs for Diabetes care as well as other diseases. These are the methods which work at cellular level and root out any insufficiency. As studies are proving, Yoga has a definite role to play in Diabetes mellitus management.

To read more about role of Yoga in Diabetes mellitus, please click here.

The Overall and Personal Cost of Diabetes

The out-of-pocket expenses associated with diabetes remain a substantial portion of disposable income and a barrier to the prevention of diabetes-related complications. The estimated total economic cost of diagnosed diabetes in 2012 in USA was $245 billion, a 41% increase from our previous estimate of $174 billion (in 2007 dollars). This highlights the substantial burden that diabetes imposes on society. Additional components of societal burden include intangibles from pain and suffering, resources from care provided by non-paid caregivers, and the burden associated with undiagnosed diabetes.

World Diabetes Day

On World Diabetes Day – Diabetes Mellitus

World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14 to mark the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting of London ON, who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea leading to the discovery of insulin in 1921.

This day engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat of diabetes. It was adopted as an official United Nations Day in 2007 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world. Healthy Living and Diabetes is the World Diabetes Day theme for 2014-2016.

The logo for World Diabetes Day is the blue circle – the global symbol for diabetes which was developed as part of the Unite for Diabetes awareness campaign.

Diabetes Mellitus

Around 250 B.C., the name “diabetes” was first used. The word diabetes comes from Greek, meaning a “siphon”. Araetus the Cappadocian, a Greek physician during the second century A.D., named the condition diabainein. He described patients who were passing too much water (polyuria) – like a siphon. The word became “diabetes” from the English adoption of the Medieval Latin diabetes.

In 1675, Thomas Willis added mellitus to the term, although it is commonly referred to simply as diabetes. Mel in Latin means “honey”; the urine and blood of people with diabetes has excess glucose, and glucose is sweet like honey. Diabetes mellitus could literally mean “siphoning off sweet water”.

In ancient India people observed that ants would be attracted to some people’s urine, because it was sweet. The term “Sweet Urine Disease” was coined.

Key Points

diabetes

  • Diabetes is a long-term condition that causes high blood sugar levels.
  • In 2013 it was estimated that over 382 million people throughout the world had diabetes.
  • In Type 1 Diabetes – the body does not produce insulin. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1.
  • In Type 2 Diabetes – the body does not produce enough insulin for proper function. Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type.
  • Gestational Diabetes – this type affects females during pregnancy.
  • The most common diabetes symptoms include
    • Polyuria – frequent urination
    • Polydipsia – intense thirst, and
    • Polyphagia – intense hunger.
    • Weight gain, unusual weight loss, fatigue, cuts and bruises that do not heal, male sexual dysfunction, numbness and tingling in hands and feet are also commonly reported symptoms.
  • In Type 1 Diabetes, if you follow a healthy eating plan, do adequate exercise, and take insulin, you can lead a normal life.
  • In Type 2, patients need to eat healthily, be physically active, and test their blood glucose. They may also need to take oral medication, and/or insulin to control blood glucose levels.
  • As the risk of cardiovascular disease is much higher for diabetics, it is crucial that blood pressure and cholesterol levels are monitored regularly.
  • As smoking might have a serious effect on cardiovascular health, diabetics should stop smoking.
  • Hypoglycemia – low blood glucose – can have a deleterious effect on patient.
  • Hyperglycemia – when blood glucose is too high – can also have a bad effect on the patient.

There are three types of diabetes:

1) Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

The body does not produce insulin. It is also referred to as insulin-dependent diabetesjuvenile diabetes, or early-onset diabetes. People usually develop type 1 diabetes before their 40th year, often in early adulthood or teenage years. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1. Patients with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life. They must also ensure proper blood-glucose levels by carrying out regular blood tests and following a special diet. The prevalence of type 1 Diabetes among the under 20s in the USA rose 23% between 2001 and 2009.

2) Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

diabetes

Beta cells in islets of Langerhans do not produce enough insulin for proper function, or the receptors in the body do not react to insulin (insulin resistance). Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type. Overweight and obese people have a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. People with more of central obesity are especially at risk. Being overweight/obese causes the body to release chemicals that can destabilize the body’s cardiovascular and metabolic systems. It may respond to simple measures such as : loss of weight, following a healthy diet, doing plenty of exercise, and monitoring blood glucose levels regularly. However, type 2 diabetes is typically a progressive disease. Drinking just one can of (non-diet) soda per day can raise our risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes is also greater as we get older. Men whose testosterone levels are low have been found to have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

3) Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Diagnosis of gestational diabetes is made during pregnancy. This type affects females during pregnancy. Some women have very high levels of glucose in their blood, and their bodies are unable to produce enough insulin to transport all of the glucose into their cells, resulting in progressively rising levels of glucose.

The majority of gestational diabetes patients can control their diabetes with exercise and diet. Women whose diets before becoming pregnant were high in animal fat and cholesterol had a higher risk for gestational diabetes, compared to their counterparts whose diets were low in cholesterol and animal fats.

Pre-diabetes Mellitus

The vast majority of patients with type 2 diabetes initially have prediabetes. Their post-prandial blood glucose levels go higher than normal, but come back to normal. Studies indicate that some damage to the circulatory system and the heart may occur even at this stage.

Investigations

Doctors can determine whether a patient has a normal metabolism, is pre-diabetic or diabetic through three tests:

  • The Hb A1c test: Glycated hemoglobin (hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c, A1C, or Hb1c; sometimes also HbA1c or HGBA1C) is a form of hemoglobin that is measured primarily to identify the average plasma glucose concentration over prolonged periods of time.
    – at least 6.5% means diabetes
    – between 5.7% and 5.99% means pre-diabetes
    – less than 5.7% means normal
  • The FPG (Fasting Plasma Glucose) test
    – at least 126 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/L) means diabetes
    – between 100 mg/dl and 125.99 mg/dl (5.5 to 7.0 mmol/L) means prediabetes
    – less than 100 mg/dl (5.5 mmol/L) means normal
An abnormal reading following the FPG means the patient has impaired fasting glucose (IFG)
  • The OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test)
    – at least 200 mg/dl (11.2 mmol/L) means diabetes
    – between 140 and 199.9 mg/dl (7.8 to 11.2 mmol/L) means prediabetes
    – less than 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) means normal
An abnormal reading following the OGTT means the patient has impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)

Controlling Diabetes

All types of diabetes are treatable.

Diabetes type 1 lasts a lifetime, there is no known cure. Patients with type 1 are treated with regular insulin injections, as well as a special diet and exercise.

Type 2 usually lasts a lifetime, however, it can be managed with or without medication, through a combination of exercise, diet and body weight control. Sometimes insulin injections are also required.

Patient has a significantly higher risk of developing complications especially if diabetes is not adequately controlled.

Complications linked to diabetes

Complications of Diabetes Mellitus

  • Eye complications– glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and some others.
  • Foot complications– neuropathy, ulcers, and sometimes gangrene which may require that the foot be amputated
  • Skin complications– people with diabetes are more susceptible to skin infections and skin disorders
  • Heart problems– such as ischemic heart disease, when the blood supply to the heart muscle is diminished
  • Hypertension– common in people with diabetes, which can raise the risk of kidney disease, eye problems, heart attack and stroke
  • Mental health– uncontrolled diabetes raises the risk of suffering from depression, anxiety and some other mental disorders
  • Hearing loss– diabetes patients have a higher risk of developing hearing problems
  • Gum disease– there is a much higher prevalence of gum disease among diabetes patients
  • Gastroparesis– the muscles of the stomach stop working properly
  • Ketoacidosis– a combination of ketosis and acidosis; accumulation of ketone bodies and acidity in the blood.
  • Neuropathy– diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage which can lead to several different problems.
  • HHNS (Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketotic Syndrome)– blood glucose levels shoot up too high, and there are no ketones present in the blood or urine. It is an emergency condition.
  • Nephropathy– uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to kidney disease
  • PAD (peripheral arterial disease)– symptoms may include pain in the leg, tingling and sometimes problems walking properly
  • Stroke– if blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood glucose levels are not controlled, the risk of stroke increases significantly
  • Erectile dysfunction– male impotence.
  • Infections– people with badly controlled diabetes are much more susceptible to infections
  • Healing of wounds– cuts and lesions take much longer to heal

Some Facts And Myths Regarding Diabetes

Many presumed myths keep making rounds. It is important to have an accurate picture of the disease. Some common diabetes myths are mentioned here:

  • People with diabetes should not exercise– THIS IS NOT TRUE! Exercise is important for people with diabetes, as it is for everybody else. Exercise helps manage body weight, improves cardiovascular health, improves mood, helps blood sugar control, and relieves stress. Yoga has been shown to have an important role. Patients should discuss exercise with their doctor first.
  • Fat people always develop type 2 diabetes eventually– Again, this is not true. Being overweight or obese raises the risk of becoming diabetic, they are risk factors, but do not mean that an obese person will definitely become diabetic.
  • Diabetes is a nuisance, but not serious– Diabetes is a serious disease. Two thirds of diabetes patients die prematurely from stroke or heart disease. The life expectancy of a person with diabetes is from five to ten years shorter than other people’s.
  • Children can outgrow diabetes– Child-onset diabetes is almost always type 1; insulin-producing beta cells in islets of Langerhans in pancreas do not produce insulin, so they will need to take insulin for the rest of their lives.
  • Don’t eat too much sugar, you will become diabetic– A person with diabetes type 1 develops the disease because immune system destroyed the insulin-producing beta cells. A diet high in calories, which can make people overweight/obese, raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, especially if there is a history of this disease in the family.
  • I know when my blood sugar levels are high or low– The only way to be sure about your blood sugar levels is to test it regularly. Even very slight rise in blood-glucose levels significantly raises the risk of ischemic heart disease.
  • Diabetes diets are different from other people’s– Experts say that there is no need to buy special diabetic foods because they offer no special benefit as compared to the healthy things we can buy in most shops. Diabetics just need to eat healthy.
  • High blood sugar levels are fine for some, while for others they are a sign of diabetes– High blood-sugar levels are never normal for anybody. Some illnesses, mental stress and steroids can cause temporary hikes in blood sugar levels in people without diabetes. Anybody with higher-than-normal blood sugar levels or sugar in their urine should be checked for diabetes.
  • Diabetics cannot eat bread, potatoes or pasta– People with diabetes can eat starchy foods. However, they must keep an eye on the size of the portions. Whole grain starchy foods are better, as is true for people without diabetes.
  • One person can transmit diabetes to another person– Diabetes is not infectious or contagious.
  • Only older people develop type 2 diabetes– A growing number of children and teenagers are developing type 2 diabetes. Experts say that this is linked to the explosion in childhood obesity rates, poor diet, and physical inactivity.
  • I have to go on insulin, this must mean my diabetes is severe– people take insulin when diet alone or diet with oral or non-insulin injectable medicines do not provide good-enough diabetes control. Insulin helps diabetes control. It does not usually have anything to do with the severity of the disease.
  • If you have diabetes you cannot eat chocolates or sweets– People with diabetes can eat chocolates and sweets if they combine them with exercise or eat them as part of a healthy meal, provided blood glucose level stays within normal limits.
  • Diabetes patients are more susceptible to colds and illnesses in general– A person with diabetes with good control is no more likely to become ill with a cold or something else than other people.

 Ayurveda in Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes was known to ancient Ayurveda and Yoga experts thousands of years ago.  The Indian physician Sushruta in 400 B.C. described the sweet taste of urine from affected individuals, and for many centuries to come, the sweet taste of urine was key to diagnosis. Diabetes Mellitus is known to Indians from Vedic period onwards by the name Asrava (Prameha). Diabetes is also known as Madhumeha (means passing sweet urine) in Ayurveda. The knowledge and effectiveness of diagnosis can be understood from the fact that Ayurveda has classified Diabetes (madhumeha) into 20 different types!

Types of diabetes , Causes and Symptoms

Two types of Prameha from management point of view has been described:

  • Krisha Pramehi (Lean Diabetic), and
  • Sthula pramehi  (Obese Diabetic)

They are classified in Ayurveda on very similar grounds as Diabetics are classified in IDDM and NIDDM respectively.

On the very similar pattern we find the classification as

  • Sahaj pramehi (Congenital) and
  • Apathaya nimmitaj (due to overeating and wrong eating habits).

Ayurveda clearly defines diabetes.  Diabetes Mellitus was known to Hindu Civilization since vedic period by the names:

  • Asrava(Prameha),
  • Madhumeha, or
  • Maharoga(Major Disease),

as almost all parts of the body and every cell of human physiology are affected.

It also disturbs 5 sheaths of the body –

  1. annamaya kosha {Food sheath},
  2. pranamayakosha{Energy sheath},
  3. manomaya kosha{Mind Sheath},
  4. vijnana maya kosha{IntellectualSheath} and
  5. anandamaya kosha{Bliss Sheath}.

According to Ayurveda, prameha is divided in 4 major types (and total 21 types)

  • Kapha type (again divided into 10 types)
  • Pitta type (again divided into 6 types)
  • Vata type (divided into 4 types)
  • Juvenile diabetes for children (for unhealthy practices of parents and/or due to the sins of past-birth)

The main cause of prameha (diabetes) are lack of exercise and consumption of excess food having ushna, snigdha and guru nature. Foods that increase kapha, medhas and mootra are the major factors for prameha.

Yashcha kinchith vidhiranyepi sleshma medho moothra samjananam sa sarva: nidana vishesha.

Classification of Prameha (Diabetes) :

According to Ayurveda , Prameha (Diabetes) can be classified in two categories :-

1)      Apatharpana uthaja prameha describing the lean diabetic and

2)      Santharpana uthaja prameha relating the obese diabetic.

Classification according to Causes of diabetes :-

1)      Sahaja prameha (congenital)

2)      Apathyanimittaja prameha (due to over eating and poor habits)

Classification of Diabetes according to Dosha :-

According to Ayurveda, Prameha (diabetes) is a tridoshaja vyadhi.  However the predominance of any one dosha and dooshya enables its classification into

  • Vataja Prameha
  • Pitaja Prameha, &
  • Kaphaja Pramehas.

They are further sub classified into 20 sub categories according to characteristics of urine, its volume, dhatu being excreted through urine.

Normally, Prameha (Diabetes- Madhumeha ) is classified by Ayurvedic Practitioners according to dosha predominance viz.

1) kapahja,

2) pithaja,

3) vathaja,

4) kapha-pithaja,

5) kapha-vathaja,

6) pitha-vathaja, and

7) vatha-pitha-kaphaja.

Sannipatha, kevala vathaja and kapha-vthaja(to some extent) and pitha-vathaja can be considered as IDDM. And others are considered as NIDDM.

1. Sweda Profuced Sweating
2. Angagandham Foul Smell of the Body
3. Anga Shidhilathwam Looseness of the body
4. Sayyasna Swapnasukhabhishangithwam Feeling of lethargy
5. Hridayopadeham Feeling of something coated or heaviness of hridaya.
6. Netropadeham Feeling of some thing coated on eyes
7. Jhwopadeham sensation of a coated tongue.
8. Shravanopadeham Feeling of coating on ears
9. Anga ghanathwam Heaviness of body parts
10. Keshathivridhi Excessive growth of hairs
11. Nakhathivridhi Excessive growth of Nails
12. Sheetha priyathwam Affinity towards cold
13. Gala shosham Dryness of throat
14. Thalu shosham Dryness of palate
15. Asya madhuryam Sweet taste in mouth
16. Karadaham Burning sensation of palms
17. Pada daham Burning sensation of soles
18. Moothra madhuryam Sweetness of urine

According to Sushruta, Dosha predominance is the primary factor in Diabetes Complication.  According to him Malabandha (Constipation) is a complication of this disease as the patient has a concentration of Meda.  In such cases laxatives of average doses are not effective.

According to Brihathrayees, pidika (diabetic carbuncle) is a major complication of prameha (Madhumeha).

Complications as per Dosha :-

Kaphaja

  • Avipakam– indigestion
  • Aruchi– Loss of appetite
  • Chardi– Vomiting tendency
  • Athinidra– Excessive sleep
  • Kasam– Cough
  • Peenasam– Cold with running nose

According to Charaka.  There are three types of prameha.

  • Sadhya  – curable
  • Yapya    – Palliable
  • Asadhya – Incurable

Sadhya: Describes patients who have been diagnosed very early in the onset of prameha (Madhumeha). In this category of patients , there can be those who are sthoola  (obese) and the origin of their disease is in apathyaja (poor living habbits)

Yapya: Patients under this catagory have Pittaja prameha & certain types of kaphaja prameha. However Yapya (palliable) helps control the disease with treatment.

Asadhya: Describes the incurable version of prameha (Madhumeha) & inherited diabetes.Sahaja patients suffering from this variety are Krisha (lean)

Involvement of Ojas in Prameha (Madhumeha)

Ojas is the essence of life, an extract of the seven dhathus (Elements) Rasa(Chyle), Rakta (Blood),Mamsa (Muscles), Majja(Marrow), Asthi (Bone), Meda (Brain & Spinal Cord), Sukra (Sperm & Ovum), Ojas (Mahadhatu=Superior Dhatu) represented as bala {strength }of the body. The ojus in a healthy person determines the physical, psychic, sensory motor functions of the body. The biochemical component of the body which is reddish, white, slightly yellowish in colour residing in heart and other vital organs of the body. If ojas is distrubed, degeneration will be fast and result in decreased life span. In prameha the ojas (life essence) is expunged from the body through all navadwaras especially through urine & sweat.

Ojas gets imbalanced in prameha in two ways:

  1. Through obstruction in blood vessels (srothorodha)
  2. Degeneration of the body components is dhatu kshaya this can cause both cardiac & nervous system disorders.all this is ojakshaya meaning an imbalance in Ojus.

Management of Prameha (Madhumeha)

According to Ayurveda the line of treatment of prameha is strictly on individual’s constitution.

1)      The prakrithi of the patient

2)      Dosha predominance of disease

3)      Dooshya vitiation

4)      Obstruction in srothus

5)      Manasika Prakrithi

6)      Ahara & Vihara

7)      Samskaras or Hereditary factors etc…

In general Diabetes Mellitus (Vathaja prameha) patients are advised to have Bhrimhana medication & diet which increases dhathus in the body.

7 Effective Home Remedies for Controlling Sugar

Ayurveda recommends many simple home remedies to keep diabetes under control. Incorporating one or two of these remedies into your daily diet plan can help you prevent or at the least manage your blood glucose levels.

  1. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric powder + 1 teaspoon of amla powder + half a tablespoon of methi seeds powder in half a glass of water and take daily in the morning on an empty stomach.
  2. Mix honey with barley that is soaked overnight in Triphala decoction (available at Ayurveda stores) and have it several times during the day.
  3. Juice of bitter melon or gourd can test the toughest amongst us. But when taken on an empty stomach it works wonders at balancing our blood sugar level.
  4. Grind and mix 100gms of fenugreek (methi) seeds, 50gms of turmeric and some white pepper. Take one teaspoon of this powder with a glass of milk twice daily.
  5. Soak one teaspoon of fenugreek overnight in water and drink it with water or milk in the morning.
  6. A tablespoon of the juice of the Indian gooseberry mixed with a cup of fresh bitter gourd juice is said to enable the pancreas to secrete insulin, if it is taken daily for two months.
  7. Drink a glass of water with 10 tulsi leaves, 10 belpatras and fenugreek leaves early in the morning on an empty stomach.

Yoga in Diabetes

Effectiveness of Yoga at preventing and treating diabetes is due to its emphasis of a healthy diet and lifestyle as well as its ability to balance the endocrine system, massage and tone the abdominal organs, stimulate the nervous and circulatory systems, and reduce stress. Pranayama or breathing exercises offer still greater hope.

Stress has been shown to play an important role in diabetes by elevating blood glucose levels and increasing the odds of developing certain complications, such as heart disease, stroke and infections. And having a chronic disease that requires major lifestyle changes and constant monitoring can be very stressful in itself. Research now shows that chronically elevated levels of cortisol (hormone produced by the stress response) can lead to blood sugar problems, insulin resistance, and diabetes. Yoga and meditation are the two best practices to reduce stress and yoga has been shown to dramatically lower cortisol levels in the body.

All steps of Ashtanga Yoga, viz., Yamas, Niyamas, Asanas, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharna, Dhyana and Samadhi, are important and should  be adhered to in the same order. In health or disease, it’s always better to know and choose yoga postures and pranayama exercises according to the prakriti and  vikriti of the person.

In general, exercise is a highly effective part of diabetes treatment because it increases insulin sensitivity and lowers blood sugar. Many studies have reported the beneficial effect of the practice of yoga on diabetes, confirming that the practice of postures can stimulate the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Yoga has also been proven helpful for weight management, blood sugar control, as well as lowering of the dosage of diabetic medications.

Yoga Postures

Surya Namaskar
Forward bends, twists and prone (belly down) poses all compress the abdomen to stimulate the pancreas, with prone poses being the most effective. Use forward bends and calming poses to reduce stress. In addition to acting on koshas and balancing chakras, yoga postures improve lymphatic circulation and hence body immunity. Yogic postures done with focus on breath, bandha, drishti and proper alignment are meditative and help in detoxification. Two reasons that yoga is particularly great for diabetes is that it:

  • Rejuvenates pancreatic cells, through alternate abdominal contractions and relaxation, during asanas (yogic postures which produce relaxation) and breathing exercises.
  • Reduces blood sugar due to muscular exercise involved in the asanas.

Some yogic postures provenly beneficial in diabetes are:

  1. Surya Namaskar (sun salutation)
  2. Setubandhasana (bridge pose)
  3. Pavanamuktasana (wind relieving pose)
  4. Trikonasana (triangle pose)
  5. Tadasana (mountain pose)
  6. Sukhasana (easy pose)
  7. Padmasana (lotus pose)
  8. Pashimottanasana (posterior stretch)
  9. Ardhmatsyendrasana (half spinal twist)
  10. Pawanmuktasana (joint freeing series)
  11. Bhujangasana (cobra pose)
  12. Vajrasana (thunderbolt pose)
  13. Dhanurasana (bow pose)
  14. Halasana (plow pose)
  15. Naukasana (boat pose)
  16. Bhujangasana (cobra pose)
  17. Shavasana (corpse pose)
  18. Anila Asana

Pranayama

pranayama2
Practice Pranayama to increase circulation of blood, oxygen and prana to facilitate healing and for stress reduction. Ashwin, the breath, is said to be the physician of gods. According to Vedas, it heals all maladies, with a name or without it. Recent years have witnessed a rise in interest in the healing powers of pranayama and myriad of studies have proven its positive effects on health. Pranayama has immense healing potential, and in expert hands, can work wonders. Pranayama is a great way to boost immunity. It is the bridge between the physical body and spiritual body and optimizes the flow of Prana. In general, some exercises like:

  • Bhastrika
  • Ujjayi
  • Kapal Bhati
  • Anulom Vilom
  • Moorchha
  • Vibhag Pranayama
  • Mahat Pranayama
  • Sama Vritti Pranayama
  • Visham Vritti Pranayama etc.

have been shown to help in diabetes. Please check the details of some breathing exercises here.

To offer the advantages of this yogic science of breathing, SAVY launched Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program ,a stepped program based on some very safe and healing breathing exercises in 2012.

Meditation

meditation
Meditation reduces stress, calms the mind and activates the body’s natural healing abilities. You can use one of the following by itself and/or at the beginning and end of yoga practice:

  • Yoga Meditation,
  • Third Eye Meditation
  • Prana Healing Meditation

Yoga Nutrition

Healthy Heat Eating

Diabetes has been linked to the western lifestyle, as it is rarely seen in cultures that consume a natural non-processed, non-refined diet. Because of the standard Western diet that is high in sugar and dead carbohydrates that turn to sugar, the pancreas becomes exhausted and the cells are overworked. A yogic diet that is high in fiber, whole grains, legumes and vegetables is recommended to lose excess weight and stabilize blood sugar levels. With the synergetic combination of yoga, regular aerobic exercise and healthy diet diabetes can be controlled and quiet often reduced or even cured.

Some studies on raw vegetarian diet claim miraculous results.

Marma Therapy

Marma Points

Marmas can also be called minor chakras; they are vital points in the body through which life energy flows. There are 108 marmas and they are classified into different groups. Some marmas are very important in diabetes, and if massaged with proper pressure/technique, order, oil, duration etc., can help a lot in prevention as well as relief. Some points for diabetes are :

  1. Indrabasti
  2. Hridaya marma
  3. Tala Hridaya
  4. Urvi Marma
  5. Stanarohita Marma
  6. Guda Marma

Activation of these and other important points by massage with specific herbal oils, medicated ghrita in a gentle manner with discrete motion is highly beneficial. All this must be undertaken under the strict supervision of a well-trained expert with actual experience.

Ayurvedic/ Yogic massage based on Marma Therapy is quite beneficial. This is done not only as a means to relieve stress but also for deeper therapeutic reasons. It assists in hormonal balance. Most masseurs are not trained in such specialized massage, so, finding a knowledgeable expert becomes very important.

Mudra Vigyan and Kriya Vigyan

yoga mudra

Various hand postures (hasta mudras) are said to have very beneficial effect in health and disease.

There are five hand mudras which are quite effective in diabetes. Practice for 45 minutes daily at a stretch or three times of 15 minutes each, depending on your comfort level.

1. Surya Mudra

‘Surya’ is a Sanskrit word that means ‘Sun’. Surya mudra is known to increase the fire within the human body that in turn ensures an optimised metabolic rate. Diabetics, in general, have poor metabolic rates which results in increased sugar levels and weight gain. Regular practice of this mudra will help boost metabolic rates, thus ensuring loss of weight and lowering of sugar levels. The mudra also helps easing indigestion and associated problems.

Method:

  1. Sit or stand straight.
  2. Stretch your hands to your front.
  3. Bend your ring finger so that it touches the root of thumb.
  4. Keep the other fingers spread out, apart from each other.

2. Pran Mudra

Known as the Mudra of Life, it helps in improving the vital force of life and activates your Mooladhara Chakra or root chakra. Thus, it empowers you wholly within. The mudra, when practiced without fail, helps in detoxifying your body. Practicing this mudra alongside Apan Mudra has been proven to offer relief to those suffering from diabetes.

Method:

  1. Sit down in a relaxed position, preferably, Padmasana (Lotus pose), with your eyes closed. Those who are uncomfortable in this position can opt for performing the mudra in Tadasana (Mountain Pose).
  2. Focus on your breathing.
  3. Keep your hands on your sides.
  4. Bend your little finger and ring finger to touch the thumb.
  5. Keep the index finger and middle finger straight.

Make sure that you perform this mudra with both the hands.

3. Apan Mudra

The mudra, also called the mudra of purification, is one of the easiest yoga mudras. It aids in striking a better balance between the elements within the human body. Thus, it ensures that the unwanted toxins are flushed out properly from your body. This mudra results in frequent urination for eliminating the wastes, thus lowering the blood sugar levels.

Method:

  1. Sit in Padmasana or Vajrasana. Those who have knee problems can opt for standing in Tadasana.
  2. Keep your hands stretched to your front.
  3. Bend your thumb, middle finger, and ring finger in such a way that their tips come together.
  4. Keep the little finger and index finger straight.

Make sure that you perform this mudra with both the hands. Combine this mudra with Vayu mudra and practice regularly for preventing and curing diabetes.

4. Gyan Mudra

Also known as Chin Mudra, it can be practiced by the diabetics to enjoy deep relaxation. It helps in relaxing the body and eliminating stress and other mind-related issues.

Method: The mudra, in general, is practiced alongside meditation poses.

  1. Choose a sitting position, such as Padmasana, Vajrasana or Sukhasana, depending on your ease of doing so. You can even choose Tadasana, if you can concentrate without any trouble. Those who find it difficult to follow any of the yoga asanas can opt for sitting relaxingly on a chair. Keep your eyes closed.
  2. Keep your back straight; head and chest should be held high. Focus on your breathing.
  3. Keep your palms on your knees. Palms should face upwards.
  4.  Bend the index finger to touch the thumb’s tip, while the rest of the fingers are kept straight.
  5. Performing this Mudra while chanting will yield more effective outcomes.

5. Linga Mudra

Lingam, in Sanskrit, means phallus – the male reproductive organ. This mudra is helpful for those who are suffering from diabetes. It helps in activating the fire element within the human body, thus generating intense heat. This, in turn, causes an increase in metabolic levels. The higher the metabolic levels, the more the chances of a person losing weight. This, automatically, lowers blood sugar levels, offering relief from diabetes.

Method:

  1. Sit down in Padmasana, Vajrasana or Sukhasana or choose to stand in Tadasana.
  2. Clasp your hands stretched in front of the body while keeping the fingers intertwined.
  3. The thumb of your left hand should point upward. Circle it with the right thumb and right index finger.
  4. Inhale and exhale normally and maintain the position for 15 minutes.

Nabho Mudra - Breathe and Heal

Nabho Mudra – Breathe and Heal

Also, Nabho mudra and Khechari mudra, when done properly along with certain Pranayamas, are said to have a curative effective.

ayurved

Panchakarma requires strict supervision by an expert. Shatkarma is a set of six detoxifying procedures, viz., Neti, Dhauti, Nyauli, Basti, Kapal Bhati, Tratak, which are said to remove the toxins from the body and thus help the body recover from any ailment.

NADA YOGA AND MANTRAS

All disorders in Ayurveda have been correlated to karmic influences. Hence chanting Mantras with appropriate gestures is very helpful. The selection of Mantras and time to chant depends on the natal chart and its interpretation.

Gayatri Mantra

Mantras influence the vibratory functions of cells and help them work in specific synchronization with the brain. Over a period of time it helps to cleanse the body of toxins. These therapies must be followed with strict guidelines of diet and lifestyle.

VEDIC ASTROLOGY AND GEMSTONES

Gemstone therapy and Vedic astrology have been shown to be useful in diabetes.According to Astrology, planetary Combinations which causes Diabetes are:

  • Two or Three Malefic Planets if posited in Watery Signs
  • Two or Three Malefic Planets posited in the 6th House.
  • Two of Three Malefic Planets posited in Libra or in 7th house
  • Moon afflicted by Sun or Mars in Watery Signs
  • Venus afflicted by Sun or Mars in Watery Signs
  • If the 6th lord is posited in 8th or vice versa

Astrologically, Diabetes can be cured by wearing two gems:

  1. Red coral, and
  2. Yellow sapphire.

There are certain rules for wearing the stone:

1. The Gemstones shall be worn in silver.
2. Gemstones shall be energized by purification.
3. The Gemtones shall be worn in right hand.
4. Gemstones can be worn in a single pendant where Yellow Sapphire shall be fitted on the right hand side and Red Coral on the left hand side.

Stress and Anxiety Care Workshop

Stress

Bringing your nervous system back into balance

Stress is necessary for life. Like finely-tuned strings of a guitar, you need stress for creativity, learning, and your very survival. Stress is harmful only when it becomes overwhelming and interrupts the healthy state of equilibrium that your nervous system needs to remain in balance. Unfortunately, overwhelming stress has become an increasingly common characteristic of contemporary life.

What do I learn in a Stress and Anxiety Care Workshop?

You will learn about stress, anxiety, their symptoms, their pathogenesis according to Modern Medicine and the Yoga/ Ayurveda perspective. You’ll also be given an overview of all major modalities of treatment available. You’ll be given an overview of the role of mindfulness and breathing exercises in these diseases. We’ll introduce you to a system of mindfulness and breathing retraining which delivers immediate and sustained improvement for people with stress and/ or anxiety, based on DSBH Therapy and Dr. Sahdev’s clinical work in India spanning over three decades. This system is:

  • Scientific basis – based on the standard medical principles of respiration, guidelines of the science of breathing-Pranayama and supported by research
  • Natural – it’s all natural and no supplements, vitamins, pills are advised
  • Drug-free – categorically no drugs are involved in any form
  • Potent – as medical research into their effectivity has shown so far, these methods are quite effective and potent, and in good hands and with proper guidance, success rate is quite predictable
  • Effective – these breathing exercises significantly decrease stress, anxiety, insomnia symptoms
  • Safe – we follow international best practice guidelines

How is it beneficial to me?

Stress and Anxiety Care Workshop will give you an overview of stress and anxiety management and introduce you to some basic breathing exercises in DSBH Therapy (full program offered in separate workshops) for  breathing re-training which is completely natural, safe, potent, effective and totally drug-free. You receive advice on management of stress and anxiety. If you are suffering from Insomnia, Panic Attacks or Sleep Apnoea the appropriate advice will be applicable to improve these specific conditions too. The Workshop teaches you breathing techniques and strategies which help you to optimise breathing. The aim is to learn breathing patterns to help you become a normal healthy person again. Normalising the breathing pattern in this way results in a decline in symptoms and need for medication.

Expected Outcome with exercises in DSBH Therapy

  • Significant reduction in/or elimination of stress and anxiety medications
  • Significant reduction in/or elimination of stress and anxiety symptoms and attacks
  • Decreased reliance on/or elimination of, sleep apnoea appliances such as CPAP machines and mandibular advancement splints.
  • Symptomatic relief of other psycho-somatic disorders
  • Increased stamina and energy levels, better work performance, improved sleep
  • Decreased stress levels, increased happiness

Who does this workshop help?

The workshop is most useful for those people who are prepared to take time and responsibility to control their problems. The workshop will be useful to anybody who can follow instructions, do breathing exercises and wants to learn more about his/ her problems and is open to newer medically-documented solutions. It is useful for people with all types and degrees of severity of stress and anxiety as well as people with other disorders such as insomnia, snoring, sleep apnoea and panic attacks. Surya Namaskar

London SAVY Yoga – Surya Yoga

SAVY Yoga is now being offered at different locations in London ON : South London and North London. To serve London in a better way, instead of serving some run-of-the-mill pseudo-yoga routines, we offer some very useful Yoga/ Pranayama routines, ranging from gentle to very challenging routines, for a beginner to an advanced student alike. In this series we’ll be giving introduction to these classes one by one and what benefits you can derive from these innovative, all-new, all-yoga routines based on authentic Ashtanga Yoga.   The Sun is the source of all energy and the supporter of all life-forms. In India, it is more than just a star and Indian culture respects and worships this powerful source of energy as a deity. Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation, an integral part of Surya Yoga, is one way Hindus pay respect to the “sun god” and in turn gain enormous health benefits. Surya Namaskar, also known in English as Sun Salutation is a well-known sequence of twelve asanas. The obvious characteristic of Surya Namaskar is the fact that it exercises the entire body. The Sun Salutation is a graceful sequence of twelve postures performed as one continuous exercise. Each position is reverse of the one before, stretching the body in a different way and alternatively expanding and contracting the chest to regulate the breathing. Surya Namaskar There is unnecessary controversy about the origin of Surya Namaskara. The Surya Namaskara mantra comes from Rig Veda; so, in all probability, Surya Namaskara is as old as Rig Veda or Yoga itself, and was handed down from one generation to the next generation of yogis like the rest of yoga. Even Lord Rama was taught a variation of Surya Namaskar. Surya Namaskar originated in India. This sequence of movements and asanas can be practised at varying levels of awareness, ranging from that of just physical exercise, to a complete yoga, incorporating asanas, pranayama, mantra and chakra meditation. The body consists of various systems and organs which interrelate and coordinate with each other to give the best possible health and efficiency. Under the influence of various factors, these systems or their co-ordination may get disrupted; the result is disease and lack of vitality. Surya Namaskar tones up the whole body through its effect on chakras and simultaneously awakens the associated brain centres. Surya Namaskara brings these systems – the circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, excretory, generative, musculo-skeletal system etc. – into balance, thereby helping to prevent and even eradicate some diseases. Sun Salutation or  Surya Namaskar has many benefits and if done regularly can not only help you lose flab but can also help you combat diseases. Here are a few benefits of this asana.

  • Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutation, ideally done facing the early morning rising sun, helps our body to soak in the benefits of the rays of the sun.
  • This is the best and most complete series of asanas to improve lymphatic circulation and drainage. Hence, it improves body immunity.
  • Regular practice of this series of asanas can also help you lose the excess belly fat.
  • The postures in Surya Namaskar stretch our muscles and help make our body very flexible.
  • The moves and postures of the asana help all our internal organs function better — the various poses regulate our blood flow, benefit the digestive system and makes it more efficient.
  • It helps combat insomnia as it relaxes the body and calms the mind.
  • It helps regulate menstrual cycles and makes childbirth easier.
  • This is known to facilitate blood circulation and thereby help hair growth and prevent hair problems.
  • It reduces anxiety and restlessness and enhances our strength and vitality.
  • Surya Namaskar benefits not just adults, but kids as well.
  • From yoga point of view, it acts on Solar Plexus and regular practice of Surya Namaskar increases its size, hence increasing awareness and ‘gut feeling’ or intuition.
  • It acts on and balances all chakras and helps you achieve complete health.
  • The back and forth, up and down movements in Sun Salutations are fun and offer the opportunity to move playfully in the practice.
  • They warm up the body for the practice of more asanas.
  • They work the heart muscle. In William Broad’s book, ‘The Science of Yoga’, he refers to a study on the cardiovascular benefits of yoga. Results revealed that sun salutations provided the best overall benefit for the heart, specifically the left ventricle. For excellence of health, the left ventricle must relax very rapidly after each contraction and then again contract rapidly and forcibly, to push blood into aorta. Sun Salutations improve this function.
  • They bring the mind to a calm, serene yogic state.
  • They help to overcome motivation issues.
  • Sun Salutation is a very complete exercise.  If you only have fifteen or twenty minutes to practice, doing Sun Salutations alone properly cover almost all the benefits of yoga postures.
  • They keep your skills sharp.

The traditional format of Sun Salutations being taught at SAVY Studios helps you derive maximum benefits from this very useful yogic exercise. One feels very so alive after just a few rounds of this!

SAVY Yoga at Waterloo Street

Downtown London SAVY Yoga – Breathe and Heal

SAVY Yoga is now being offered at three different locations in London ON : South London, Downtown London and North London.

Breathe  and Heal class is based on our popular Yoga Therapy program – Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program.

Controlling your breath is a strong remedy against a wide range of sufferings. Done optimally and with correct technique, your breath can activate your nervous system, optimise glandular secretions, boost the body immunity and rehabilitation process and fight illness, stress and pain. You can elevate your energy level and bring more joy into your life! This art and science of living could truly be a LIFE TRANSFORMING experience for you in the safest possible way.

This breathing exercises routine is designed to get your health back on track, and to address all health ailments – the simplest to even the most complex ones. It is more about scientific, efficient and effective breathing through correct breathing techniques, and recharging your body with the pure, unadulterated energy.

The breathing techniques included in the program have been tested medically and have been proven to be a natural, safe, drug-free and effective way to relieve, control or eliminate the symptoms of various diseases, like Asthma, Allergies, Stress-related disorders, Panic Attacks, Diabetes, Hypertension, CAD, Lipid Disorders, Auto-immune disorders, Brain Degenerative Disorders, Ataxias, Fatigue, Sleep Disorders, Mood Disorders, Irritability, Snoring, Cancer, Tumours, Side-effects of Medicines, the list is endless….

Learn the ways to lead a long, healthy, disease-free life.

Learn how to regain your health if you’ve lost it or how to maintain the excellent health that you currently enjoy, and even slow down premature ageing.

Based on effective breathing techniques, validated by the stringent test of time and the millions who tried them, and backed and refined by Dr Sahdev’s almost three decades of superlative clinical experience at the fore-front of main-stream Medicine in India, inspired by his work in Surgical Oncology, Neurosurgery and other Super Specialities at premier medical institutes in India, his study and work in other Alternative modalities and Yoga, and an input of thousands of hours of educated and qualified clinical research and its deep analysis in India, these breathing and other techniques have been proved to actually deliver!

Modern Science has started discovering the wonders that can be achieved with Yoga and Pranayama, the science of breathing exercises, very recently, and already the results that are coming out are amazing! Here is what some of the recent studies have concluded:

  1. Brain Growth: According to a Harvard study, when controlled breathing is used during meditation, it can actually increase the size of the brain. Meditation that involves focusing one’s attention on the breath has the capacity to increase cortical thickness.
  2. Prevent Heart Attack: Low heart rate variability has been associated with a greater risk of heart attacks. A 2012 study found that deep breathing practices can improve heart rate variability in healthy test subjects.
  3. Lower Stress: Shallow breathing is a sign of stress and ‘fight or flight’ sign of the body. Sitting quietly and focussing on your breathing helps your body achieve a state of calm, shifting from functioning from sympathetic nervous system ( characterized by drive, fight, flight and ambition) to the parasympathetic nervous system (relax and receive).
  4. Get rid of Negative Emotions: We feel short of breath during times of panic or stress. This is the body’s natural reaction to a perceived threat. Focusing on breathing can help to alleviate anxiety, symptoms of depression, and other negative emotions. Last year, Australian researchers found that deep breathing 30 minutes before a performance effectively reduced musicians’ performance anxiety.
  5. Reduce Examination Phobia: A 2007 study published in the journal ‘Teaching and Learning in Medicine’ found that students who practiced deep-breathing meditation before an exam reported perceiving less anxiety, self-doubt and concentration loss than the students who did not practice deep breathing .
  6. Lower Blood Pressure: Taking slow, deep breaths for just a few minutes a day could help lower your blood pressure, according to Dr. David Anderson of the National Institutes of Health. While researchers have observed that slow, deep breaths can help to relax and temporarily dilate blood vessels, they don’t yet know precisely why deep breathing has the capacity to cause a lasting drop in blood pressure.
  7. Gene Expression: A recent study found that mind-body practices like yoga, meditation and deep breathing exercises can trigger the body’s “relaxation response,” a physiological state of deep relaxation that alters the way it responds to stress. This state can counter the negative effects of stress for people with health conditions like anxiety and hypertension, by actually altering the expression of genes in the immune system.

Yogis knew all this and much more for thousands of years , without any million or billion dollar labs at their disposal!

Julia Chandler

Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month – Julia Chandler

My name is Julia Ann Chandler and I joined SAVY Yoga Studio on  January 17th 2014.

I was practising Hot Yoga at a very prominent Hot Yoga Studio here in London for approximately 3 weeks and, a little over 10 years ago, I practised traditional yoga in California as an added weekly exercise regimen.

Julia Chandler

I regret not keeping up with my Yoga routines from back then.

Julia Chandler

Although I try to do my best to stay in shape I never seemed to get as sculpted as I once was while practicing yoga.

Julia Chandler

When joining SAVY my hopes were to focus on relaxation and my struggles with anxiety.

Julia Chandler

My expectations have been met and beyond.

Julia Chandler

In only the two short weeks that I have been practising at SAVY International my stress and anxiety is much more under control through breathing exercises and guided yoga practices.

Julia Chandler

I have even practised some of the breathing techniques I have learned at the studio on my own with great success.

Julia Chandler

Already I can see an enormous amount of improvement not only with my stress levels but my strength and toning.

Julia Chandler

My experience at the SAVY Studio has been amazing.

Julia Chandler

With the warm and inviting atmosphere I have been giving my best efforts to do a class daily.

Julia Chandler

There is no pressure or competition during practice it is much more of a healing experience.

Julia Chandler

Dr. Jitender K Sahdev is a kind hearted man with a plethora of knowledge in many areas which is an added bonus in any Yoga instructor.

Julia Chandler

When I first contacted SAVY International to inquire about classes and prices, Dr. Sahdev kindly scheduled me in for an hour long ‘Meet and Greet’ where he showed me around the Studio, explained his credentials and practices, as well as answering any questions I may have had.

Julia Chandler

I have noticed my flexibility increasing daily.

Julia Chandler

I now feel more in control of my stress levels through deep breathing exercises.

Julia Chandler

After a yoga class my energy levels are through the roof and a sense of calmness stays with me throughout the day.

Julia Chandler

All these improvements I’ve noticed in just two short weeks.

Julia Chandler

I cannot wait to see how I’m feeling after two months or even two years.

Julia Chandler

As I get better at my practice, the better I’ll feel overall.

Julia Chandler

Strong body mind and soul!

 Julia Chandler

I highly recommend SAVY International to anyone seeking an authentic Yoga experience! You will be amazed just how beneficial it can be for you! Whether you’re adding yoga to your exercise routine or solely focusing on yoga, it is a win win! SAVY International is a ‘go at your own pace’ studio and when you leave you’ll be feeling great wanting to come back for more!

A note from the President’s desk

Dr Jitender K Sahdev

February, the shortest month of the year, is here. It’s a Black History Month studded with Groundhog Day on 2nd, World Marriage Day on 9th, the day of romantic love on Valentine’s Day on 14th, Family Day on 17th, International Mother Language Day on 21st. Winter chill still continues to be biting but severity will certainly decrease. Continue your efforts to stay fit, enjoy the winter sports and keep the warmth in your hearts alive through this last month of winters. SAVY Yoga helps you stay hale and hearty in such severe weather, as in any other weather, making you almost weather-proof.

In this now very popular Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month series, we present SAVY Yogis who have been learning the right kind of yoga with correct techniques, have done wonderfully well for themselves and are a guiding light and a source of great inspiration for others.

In this colourful month, quite warmly marked by Valentine’s Day, it’s my pleasure to introduce Julia Chandler, our new savvy SAVY Yogi  for the month of February. A curious and open person with a very inquisitive mind and blessed with a lithe and flexible yoga body, she joined SAVY Studio very recently, but we have already shared tons of information, surfacing after the barrage of questions she is ready to fire any time! Now that almost all of the 60 classes per week at the Studio have different routines and lots of classes are available at the Beginners’ and Intermediate level to all the yogis joining the Studio, she has had a chance to try many of the different yoga routines, and as is quite evident from her interest and enthusiasm, she seems to have enjoyed each single one of them, whether they were easy or challenging. She has done traditional yoga before and is enjoying her re-encounter with authentic traditional yoga at SAVY Studio. She has a very keen interest in yoga poses and is an avid learner of the newly discovered breathing exercises and what they can do for her, and works her way through the routines very dedicatedly. She is quick to learn, is bound to do great for herself and is certainly a source of enormous inspiration for others.

Keep it up, Julia!

– Jitender

A note from the President’s desk

Dr Jitender K Sahdev

October, the month of the Halloween, is here. We’ll also be celebrating International Day of Non-Violence and International World Teachers’ Day. In Canada, it is celebrated as Brain Tumor Awareness month too, and we at SAVY will be launching a program for brain tumor care this month. It marks the start of the season of autumn. It’s a very interesting month in the way that in non-leap years, January starts on the same day of the week as October, but no other month starts on the same day of the week as October in leap years. October ends on the same day of the week as February every year and January in non-leap years only. There is much more to this month, but I’ll leave that to you to explore. 😀
In this now very popular Featured SAVY Yogi of the Month series, we present SAVY Yogis who have been learning the right kind of yoga with correct techniques, have done wonderfully well for themselves and are a guiding light and a source of great inspiration for others.
With great pride and pleasure, I introduce another savvy SAVY Yogi – Debbie, this month. Debbie is a real Yogi at heart, as she believes in living in the moment and gives her best to the moment. A very loving and caring person herself, exuding positivity, she has a great attitude and a wonderful aptitude and is a joy to teach and has always been a source of great support and inspiration and a pillar of strength. Her regularly irregular presence in yoga classes, along with Mama Jane’s, 😀  is loaded with fun, focus and dedication. She doesn’t take long in picking up the instruction and her devotion and steadfastness is commendable. Her grit and determination for results is something I would love to ape ASAP.
Keep it up, Debbie!

Eric and Pauline Donald

FEATURED SAVY YOGI OF THE MONTH

My name is Pauline Donald and I started yoga with SAVY two years ago and attended 30 lessons.
Pauline Donald
After a few months break, I returned in January of this year.

I tried yoga years ago and really enjoyed it but that session was discontinued.  I tried yoga at several other places which eventually led me to SAVY.

Pauline Donald

I was looking for a program that would give me enjoyment, a challenge, and relaxation.
Pauline Donald
This yoga has gone beyond my expectations!  I have found enjoyment, on-going challenge, and relaxation during all sessions.
Pauline Donald
My favourites are the sun and moon salutation, breathing exercises and the Deep Stretch sessions on Fridays.  It is not easy but very satisfying for mind and body.
I have noticed improvement in stamina, strength especially in my arms, flexibility, concentration, and ability to relax.
Pauline Donald
I like SAVY because of the variety of movements and poses, the individual feedback to execute poses correctly, the challenge, and the warm, supportive encouragement.

Pauline Donald

Pauline Donald

I encourage anyone who is seeking to improve their body strength and flexibility and overall health benefits to join SAVY and discover for yourself.

A note from the President’s desk
Dr Jitender K Sahdev
September marks a feeling of a fresh start, turning over of a new leaf, and initiation of nesting. We continue our march into the third year with overwhelming response from savvy Londoners for their favorite Yoga Studio.
In this new series, we present SAVY Yogis who have been learning the right kind of yoga with correct techniques, have done wonderfully well for themselves and are a guiding light and a source of great inspiration for others.
With great pride and pleasure, I introduce another savvy SAVY YogiPauline Donald this month. Her zeal, zest and devotion to yoga is infectious, and the magic of her benign presence in SAVY Yoga classes is nothing less than awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, shoulder-slouching, mesmerizing and thoroughly ego-smothering experience for the rest of us. During yoga sessions, as she executes her yoga poses with complete focus, very often I catch somebody or the other looking her way with an amazed look, followed by a deep sigh, a head shake, and a semblance of an unsure resigned smile of meek submission. Her vigor and enthusiasm for greater perfection is amply bolstered by her skillful yet unattached, devoted regular practice, and her lively boy-friend, and husband, Eric. She, with her ever-present friend Mary, has come a long way in these last two years, and the ruthless, unrelenting dedication shows not even an iota of respite.

Fight Cancer

FIGHT CANCER

Fight Cancer

In an effort to provide hope and help to cancer patients and survivors, on or off treatment, at any stage of disease, we have introduced ‘Fight Cancer’ program as an extension of our Disease Reversal with Yoga Therapy and Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ programs.

Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program is the first, and so far the only, program in the world, to offer the benefits of Breathing Exercises and Surya-Yoga together for cancer and other major and minor diseases.

Cancer, like so many other diseases, has been eluding cure despite all medical research and informed enquiry so far. Skin cancer, Lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, lymphomas, leukemias, thyroid cancer, endometrial cancer…, the march of cancer is unhindered and any measures have not proved sufficient to contain its advance. Millions of people die every year because of cancer.

The link between insufficient oxygen and disease was established by modern science long time back. Dr. Otto Warburg was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1931 and again in 1944 for discovering the cause of cancer. He said, “Cancer has only one prime cause. The prime cause of cancer is the replacement of normal oxygen respiration of body cells by an anaerobic (oxygen-less) cell respiration.” Once the level of oxygen available to a cell drops below 60% of normal, the cell is forced to switch to an inferior method of energy production — fermentation. The cell can never be returned to the proper oxidation system, and loses its governor on replication. It begins to reproduce copies of itself wildly, a condition we call cancer. His findings were endorsed by The National Cancer Institute in 1952. Dr. Harry Goldbatt  published his findings in the Journal of Experimental Medicine in 1953 and his research confirmed that lack of oxygen plays the major role in causing cells to become cancerous. Dr. Albert Wahl said, “Disease is due to a deficiency in the oxidation process of the body, leading to an accumulation of toxins. These toxins are ordinarily burned in normal oxidation.” Dr. Wendell Hendricks of the Hendricks Research Foundation wrote: ” Cancer is a condition within the body where the oxidation has become so depleted that the body cells have degenerated beyond control. The body is so overloaded with toxins that it sets up a tumor mass to harbor these poisons and remove them from general activity within the body.” The evidence from these doctors’ research is conclusive. Oxygen plays the primary role in health and well-being. It is important to note that fear, worry and depression all interfere with free breathing and thus reduce oxygen uptake.

Hope sustains life and the remedy for all this is right under your nose! Yoga has a well-established palliative and supportive role and it is already being recommended to cancer patients by various hospitals. Pranayama or the Science of Breathing offers still greater healing potential and is a ray of hope! Ashwin, or the moving breath, is the physician of gods – thus goes a verse from the Vedas! According to the scriptures, breath, if directed properly, can cure each and every disease. Pranayama, the science of breathing, has a lot to offer and holds a lot of promise. Physically speaking, 70% of toxins in our body are thrown out through breathing. So, breathing exercises offer to actively detoxify your body, optimise stress level, regulate lymph flow, balance hormones in the body, balance sympathetic and parasympathetic parts of the autonomic nervous system, increase nitrous oxide production, stimulate pituitary gland directly, offer gentle massage to internal organs and even achieve much more than that. In an effort to heal the chronic, intractable and so far incurable diseases, recent years have seen a surge of interest in the healing potential of breathing exercises as well. A lot of work is being done on breathing exercises and their effects in some parts of the world and there have been reports of some amazing results.  recent medical study concluded that Yoga breathing (Pranayama) was a feasible intervention among patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy; pranayama may improve sleep disturbance, anxiety, and mental quality of life and a dose-response relationship was found between pranayama use and improvements in chemotherapy-associated symptoms and quality of life. And there are reports of cure of cancer, though unconfirmed by Modern Medicine, from some parts of the world! Surya-Traatak, or better known in the west as Sun-Gazing, a procedure in Surya Yoga or Sun Yoga, stimulates pineal and pituitary, also boosts body immunity, and this aspect can certainly be used to help control or cure diseases.

Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program, to fight cancer as well, is based on effective breathing techniques, validated by the stringent test of time and the millions who tried them, and backed and refined by Dr Sahdev’s almost three decades of study and superlative clinical experience at the fore-front of main-stream Medicine, inspired by his work in Surgical Oncology, Neurosurgery and other Super Specialities at premier medical institutes in India, his study, training and work in other Alternative modalities and Yoga, and an input of thousands of hours of educated and qualified clinical research and its deep analysis in India, these breathing and other techniques have been proven to actually deliver!

‘Fight Cancer’ program revolves mainly around breathing exercises, though there are other elements like Yoga Nutrition, Marma, Surya Traatak et al also.

To say the least, and claim the minimum, studies on the effect of breathing exercises done in the past on cancer patients have shown the following results:

  • Increased overall physical activity levels
  • Improved strength
  • Improved mood states
  • Decreased levels of perceived stress
  • Improved quality of life

With this newer and more refined ‘Fight Cancer’ program, we hope to go further and achieve much more.

We accept clients with any stage, any type, any level of the disease progression, provided they are able to breathe and follow instructions.

‘Fight Cancer’ is a stepped program. Clients start with the first step of Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program. They are required to learn and practice this routine of breathing exercises. After practicing this set of exercises for some time, at the dedicated classes at the Studio or at home, they can go in for the next step in Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program  when they are ready for it. The progress is individually monitored. Along with this breathing program, they have the option of getting guidance on Yoga Nutrition, and Marma Therapy as well. At a little more advanced level, some more procedure are also included.

This program can be easily followed by anyone who can breathe and can follow instruction. Those desirous of participating in the program can contact at the earliest possible and register for Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program program without losing any time. We want to be as helpful as possible, as early as possible.

Start with getting the Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program – Beginners CD/ audio + information booklet from the Studio and start practicing, or better still, go to Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program  page, fill up the contact form and send it to start the registration process for the next upcoming workshop.

Nabho Mudra - Breathe and Heal

Nabho Mudra in Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program

Nabho Mudra

Nabho Mudra

Nabho Mudra involves the tongue touching the palate and is somewhat similar to Khechari mudra in its action. Nabho mudra is mentioned in Gheranda Samhita and is practiced by meditators from various traditions. Nabho mudra is an easy form of Khechari Mudra, which is mentioned in Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and can be easily practised by anyone.

In Gheranda Samhita, Nabho Mudra is described as a practice where the practitioner turns the tongue upwards to meet the palate and then retains the breath. The text says that one can also do this during all activities like sitting, walking, etc.

Nabho Mudra or Simple/ Small Khechari – which Gheranda Samhita claims can remove all disease and suffering of the Yogi, forms an integral part of Dr Sahdev’s ‘Breathe and Heal’ Program, a scientifically and yogically correct and very effective breathing and meditation routine, full of possibilities. In Sanskrit, ‘Nabho’ means ‘space or heavens or sky’ and mudra means ‘posture’. So, literally it can be translated as ‘Space or Heavens or Sky Posture’. Mudras are the postures and act as smaller body locks for energy. Mahatma Budha also made use of Nabho mudra and Vipashyana, now more popular as Vipassana (Pali language), during meditation.

The breadth and depth of understanding and knowledge from the Vedas and other classical Yoga books from thousands of years ago is just astounding, overwhelming, breath-taking and divine! In this modern era, we have just begun to understand this unfathomable sea of knowledge, handed down from generation to generation in a few brief and concise verses, and experiential practices. The full potential of all this knowledge in physical, mental, metaphysical and spiritual dimensions can be comprehended by a devout, practising yoga practitioner through regular practice only.

Nabho Mudra is simple, more of a Raja Yoga practice. Khechari Mudra, a more profound, practice, done in Hatha Yoga, involves taking the tongue all the way back to reach the nasal cavity. Traditional Hatha Yoga is intended to lead to Raja Yoga, the ‘Royal Yoga’, the goal of which is the highest state of consciousness known as SamadhiKhechari is done with a lot of effort like milking the tongue and sometimes even cutting the frenulum of the tongue to free it. Once it is able to reach the nasal cavity, it can then be extended to the roof of the cavity. By stimulating certain regions of the cavity with the tongue, the yogi gets the benefit of amrita or nectar, as per Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Through this nectar, the yogi rejuvenates his body and attains long and healthy life. Whether this nectar is a physical secretion, or modulation of secretions from the master and other glands, is yet to be ascertained.

Many masters say that cutting the frenulum for Khechari is unnecessary and the same results can be gained through constant practice of Nabho Mudra. It is said that during certain stages of meditation, the tongue automatically goes and touches the roof of the palate. By constant practice, the tongue can go further back towards the throat, till it touches the uvula at the back. Finally it can be made to enter the nasal cavity. This takes years of practice.

This mudra was kept a well-guarded secret for thousands of years, and very correctly so. Nabho and Khechari take the Yogi a step closer to gaining full control over the processes of the physical body. It is an old technique to achieve peace of mind and to facilitate a state of silent and deep meditation, and hence achieving the highest state of samadhi or contemplation.  Talavya or Talabhya Kriya (‘Talu‘ means palate; ‘Talavya‘ or ‘Talabhya‘ means related to palate) is the preparatory exercise to advance to a perfect Khechari Mudra. It must be learnt directly from a physical ‘Guru‘ and should only be practiced under direct supervision of the Guru. It takes a lot of practice to learn and to do accurately even when explained properly and correctly, and it must not be attempted except under expert guidance of a learned ‘Guru’ or teacher after understanding the procedure correctly. That is more because of what these mudras are capable of rather than just the procedures. Preliminary, preparatory procedures and training in Talabhya Kriya and other procedures are essential for serious exponents of Yoga.  Amateurish attempts at this may lead to many complications. However, very simple or initial versions can be explained and understood easily and can be taught even to non-yogis and not-so-advanced yogis.

Nabho Mudra can also be considered an easier option to the practice of full Khechari mudra. Though it remains to be documented medically, but clinically and in traditional Yoga practices, many different types of diseases, even intractable ones, have been found to resolve by the practice of this mudra.

As a Sanskrit verse explains about Nabho Mudra:

यत्र यत्र स्थितों योगी सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा।

उर्ध्वजिव्ह: स्थिरो भूत्वाधारयेत्मवनं सदा।

नभोमुद्रा मवेदुषा योद्विना रोग नाशिनी।।

Yatra yatra sthitom yogi sarvakaryeshu sarvada

Urdhvajivha sthiro bhutvadharyetmavanam sada

Nabhomudra mavedusha yogvina roga nashini

Meaning

The yogi, who stays constant in all aspects at all times, controls the breath

by placing the frontal part of tongue on the palate inside the mouth.

It puts an immediate stop to all mental turmoil.

All the diseases of yogi are destroyed by the practice of this mudra.

Hatha Yoga Pradipika states:

अथ खेछरी

When the yogi now curls his tongue upward and back, he is able to, close the place where the three paths meet. The bending back of the tongue is khechari mudra and closes the three paths in akasha chakra. The yogi who remains but half a minute in this position is free from illness, old age and death. He who has mastered khechari mudra is not afflicted with disease, death, laziness, hunger, thirst and swooning. (HYP 8: 32-39)

Hatha Yoga Pradipika further says:

गोमांसं भक्ष्हयेन्नित्यं पिबेदमर-वारुणीम |
कुलीनं तमहं मन्ये छेतरे कुल-घातकाः || ४७ ||

Daily he may eat the flesh of the cow and drink wine. The word go (cow) in Vedic language means tongue; eating it is to thrust it into the gullet, which produces heat in the body causing nectar to flow out of the moon (chandra nadi) situated on the left side of the eyebrow centre, also called ida nadi, and that is called drinking wine. (HYP 8: 47-49)

Gherand Samhita states:

The body becomes beautiful; samadhi is attained, and the tongue touching the holes in the roof of the mouth obtains various juices – first he experiences a saltish taste, through alkaline to bitter then astringent, then he feels the taste of butter then ghee, then of milk, then of curds, then of whey, then of honey, then of palm juice, and lastly arises the taste of nectar. (GS iii, 30-32)

Procedure

It must be learnt and practised only under an expert guidance. It is explained here as a reference for the benefit of those who are learning under an expert teacher.

  1. Sit in any of the Yogic sitting postures such as Padmasana, Sukhasana, Vajrasana, sitting in a chair or in stand-at-ease position. Initially, it is prudent to choose one of the sitting postures.

  2. A correct and easy way of doing Nabho Mudra is by putting the tongue up against the palate, with the tip of the tongue touching between back of your teeth and hard palate, and tongue pressing against the hard palate, and keeping it there for as long as you can do it comfortably. More advanced techniques give access to varied functions.

  3. A correct and easy way of doing first level of Khechari Mudra is to put the tip of the tongue against the soft palate, behind the hard palate. For this, the tongue has to be turned upside down, bringing the undersurface of the tongue up, and touching the tip of the tongue with the soft palate. Keep it there for as long as you can. If you feel uncomfortable or feel pain, unroll your tongue and relax for a few seconds and again resume. Build up your practice slowly. A low protein diet helps advancing in this process, as does singhasana (the lion pose).

  4. Also, at the same time, you should be doing Shambhavi mudra – keep the eyesight in the middle of both the eyebrows, at Aagya Chakra. It’s more easily done with eyes closed. shambhavi

The correct and complete practice of Nabho Mudra is achieved only when your eyesight is between both the eyebrows, in Shambhavi Mudra, and your tongue is in contact with the palate. Both of these should be accomplished together at one time.

Also, Nabho Mudra can be practiced with PranayamaGheranda Samhita also instructs about retaining the breath during this practice. That is optional during meditation. During meditation, the breath naturally slows down. During deeper states, one may experience natural suspension of breath for a few minutes. This is called Kevala kumbhaka. Forcing Kevala Kumbhak is unnecessary and undesirable.

Understanding the Action of Nabho Mudra

Though explanation of the full effects and the actions of this simple, and to many seemingly illogical and unscientific, yogic procedure or pose is beyond the scope of this article, yet we can make an attempt to understand basic mechanism of some of the leading physical effects of Nabho Mudra, and to some extent, Khechari Mudra.

During Nabho mudra the tongue is fixed in one spot touching the palate. When the tongue doesn’t move, the onslaught of thoughts also decreases naturally. Thoughts may still occur, but only minimally. This principle is of great help in meditation. Instead of fighting with thoughts, just use Nabho mudra to get substantial help to reduce thoughts per minute.

In Yogic terms, we understand that the cosmic or prana energy can flow through the Sushumna nadi and nourish the entire body. This flow may be interrupted at the region of the throat. The prana energy flows from Vishudhi Chakra to organs of speech.

chakras3

If the flow of prana energy is obstructed or is obliterated, this may cause or contribute towards the instability or distractibility of the mind. Nabho mudra connects that prana energy directly to the next energy centre, i.e., Aagya Chakra, through various marma points. Thus, it helps bypass the normal route and encourages freer flow of prana. Placing the tongue against the palate is one way to bypass this blockage. This reconnection tends to calm the mind and leads to attainment of eternal bliss. This depends on the point of contact – the alveolar groove, the hard palate, the soft palate, the epiglottis, the nares, etc.; the tongue gets connected to various nadis, or energy channels, by touching marma points. Just by putting your tongue up, you can use Nabho mudra to connect the front and back channels of your body which prevents build up of too much pitta or heat. Nabho mudra can also be used to passively conduct energy flow to various upper centers and marmas (bindu, sahasrara, aagya, sthapani, simanta, etc.).

When practising routines that arouse kundalini, it is one of three safety factors that prevent ‘burn out’ in the head region, while still allowing flow of cooler energy through the crown, the third eye, and all of the associated bindus. The other two safety factors are a fully relaxed jaw release, and a suspended head position, which is said to release krikatika marma.

krikatika

Medically speaking, our body responds to any kind of threat by the ‘fight or flight’ response.

autonomic-nervous-system

In either case, sympathetic nervous system kicks in and it leads to a rise in blood pressure, in addition to other phenomena.  Tension and stress of daily living are also perceived by the body as a danger signal and have the same physiology, and the body responds through the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system.

stress

The sensory nerves from the tongue to the brain, are branches of the trigeminal, facial, glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves; all of these, except the trigeminal, are linked to the parasympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system.

nerve-supply-of-tongue

Thus, through the practice of Nabho or Khechari Mudra, we stimulate these nerves which are concerned with relaxation and also monitor taste, secretion of the different salivary glands, respiration, and so on. Through the parasympathetic nervous system, we also gain access to the hypothalamus and the endocrine glands. A side effect of using Nabho or Khechari mudra in the quest for higher consciousness is the regulation of the endocrine system, especially the pituitary gland. Nabho or Khechari allow us to control thirst and hunger. Through more advanced practices, Yogis learn to get conscious control over regulation of brain centres for blood pressure, temperature, respiration etc.

Also, body mechanisms including Carotid sinuses help to control and regulate blood pressure.

carotid-sinus

Carotid sinuses are two remarkable organs situated at the bifurcation of the carotid artery on each side, in front of the neck and just below the level of the jaws, at the level of the thyroid cartilage or Adam’s apple. The carotid sinuses contain numerous baroreceptors which function as a “sampling area” for many homeostatic mechanisms for maintaining blood pressure. The carotid sinus baroreceptors are innervated by the sinus nerve of Hering, which is a branch of the IX cranial nerve . The glossopharyngeal nerve makes synapses in the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) located in the medulla oblongata of the brainstem. The NTS indirectly modulates the activity of sympathetic and parasympathetic (vagal) neurons in the medulla and pons through the hypothalamus. These neurons then regulate the autonomic control of the heart and blood vessels.

ans-reflex

The brain responds immediately to such a stimulus by adjusting the heart rate and contraction of the arterioles, thus correspondingly adjusting the blood pressure to keep it within normal range.

Thus, Nabho mudra, in very mechanistic terms, acts by virtue of the anatomical proximity of the root of the tongue to the carotid sinuses in the neck and through access to the parasympathetic nervous system through the nerves supplying tongue. The pull at the root of the tongue acts by applying a subtle drag on these sinuses in the neck, causing them to react as though they have detected high blood pressure, with the result that the heartbeat and the blood pressure decrease. This leads to relief in stress response and overall physical and mental relaxation.

These carotid sinuses as well as the sinus nerves were well known in ancient times. Shiva Samhita says: “Stop the flow of the vigyana nadis (sinus nerves) with the second fingers. This gives siddhi (power or control attained by a Yogi through practice) in the form of happiness and bliss.”

The implications of the above verses are obvious: if you gently press these carotid sinuses then you will become very relaxed and perhaps a little faint. This can help in various other yogic practices that lead to meditation. But all this must not be tried by an uninitiated person or except under  guidance and supervision.

Sira Matrika Marmas described in Sushruta Samhita correspond with the position of carotid sinuses. In the science of Marmani Chikitsa or Marma Therapy, there are five types of Marmas on the basis of consequences, in which one type is Sadyapranahara Marma, that means injury to these Marma leads to sudden death. Sira Matrika Marmas are eight in number, lie in the neck on either side of Kanthnadi between Nila and Manya Marmas, along the carotid artery. These are Sadyapranahara Marmas.

Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest fighting systems in the world and is called the mother of martial arts. (Malayalam and Tamil, kalari: school or gymnasium, payattu: to fight or to exercise or to put hard work into. In Sanskrit, ‘Khalurika’ means parade ground or arena, and ‘payas’ means power or strength, or ‘pasi‘ meaning spear)  In this martial art, site corresponding to sira matrika is considered one of the death-causing marmani.

In acupuncture, an offspring of Marmani Chikitsa, the point renying or Stomach 9 corresponds to the location of Sira Matrika Marma. The same point is used in acupressure also.

In Dim Mak or Kyoshu Jitsu, renying is considered one of the killer points. This point is also used to subdue the opponent in karate and krav maga

As explained in the video below, carotid sinus massage is a useful procedure in Medicine too:
